I also drive mine with a Trimble Thunderbolt, distribution amp and a 4x20 LCD monitor which displays a very accurate clock and includes an NTP server.

For details, see my website...

I've open sourced the hardware and software although there is a kit available to make it easier for people.

Hi Jay,

I bought the X-mini for the KX3 and it works well with the K3 also.

My Trimble Thunderbolt GPSDO feed the ext ref on my K3, and my HPSDR systems, among other do-dads. I have a small LCD display that is controlled by a PIC chip, fed by the RS232 output of the Thunderbolt. It keeps me posted on the status of the Trimble, and also happens to display the time....

There was a guy out of China selling them for a while, but I don't see them right now. It was originally published it as a DIY project on the web. A little Google search turned up this:

http://www.ko4bb.com/Timing/GPSMonitor/

I see he also now sells an advanced kit, as well.

Of course, this doesn't automatically update the clock in the K3, but- with this staring me in the face all the time, I don't rely on the clock in the K3. I use the K3 to display other things...

KAT new beta firmware v. 1.42

Dale J. <dj2001x@...>

I just installed the latest BETA firmware version 1.42 for the KAT500. I did a tune on one of my MARS frequencies, quite a ways away and below from the ham band which meant it was a shortened antenna for that frequency and it found a match with the astounding bypass SWR of 15.04, it tuned it to 1:1, excellent!!

This is a top notch auto tuner. None finer.

Great job Elecraft!!

I think I will look into putting a 10 MHz reference clock chip to 32+ KHz and drive the PCB and take the cheap clock chip out....  A thought.

It does.  The 10 MHz goes to the HP8920, 5246 and DDS synthesizer.  I have to put in a small distribution amp to feed the house and op station.

I use data modes (PSK and RTTY) almost exclusively. I use an Signalink USB external sound card. My K3 has 2.8KHz, 500Hz and 250 Hz filters – all 8 pole. My AGC settings are as delivered excepting SLP which I set to 5 and THR which I set to 10.

I find that when I try to decode low level signals (that is very close to the noise floor) in the presence of strong signals within the 2.8KHz passband I often have problems resolving them, these problems are fixed when I use one of my narrower filters as the signal becomes much clearer on my waterfall(it stands out from the background noise) and hence the Signalink has an easier job of decoding. In an ideal world I would not have these problems.

My question is threefold;
1. is this what I should expect?
2. would different settings for my AGC make a useful difference?
3. would a "better" soundcard (assuming one exists!) fix this. I can imagine a soundcard with a very low noise floor and a wide dynamic range might well be ideal, and if so what external soundcards are recommended?

To make the headset more comfortable in a contest take a piece of paper toweling and cover the cushions. Sure helps in hot places.

I like the idea of using a cloth cushion since even the high end cans seem to use that same super thin vinyl that peels off and looks ratty.  Comfortable, but ratty. Thanks for the info.

Hello Mike,

I don't need any, but am interested in obtaining a spare set if I could find the right ones. I think, believe, the cushions are glued on. Don't try taking them off unless they are shot, you might not have a chance to replace them. I also have a second set of CM500 unused just in case. They are quite inexpensive so why not and good bang for the buck.

I want to keep it that way and plan on selling the 746Pro and using the money do get a P3. I would like to have the P3 right in front of me square with my operating position. But to get from the IF out on the K3 the cable would have to be about 10 feet. I then plan on going out the P3 to a computer monitor. I guess I can just try it and if it does not work put it in the rack also.

Re: Speaker

Speakers are a matter of personal preference. I use the M-Audio AV40 powered studio monitors with all of my rigs, not just the K3. The wide, flat frequency response lets me hear detail I miss even with external speakers built by radio manufacturers. They are reasonably priced and offer stereo inputs, so they work well with the K3.

I second that for the West Mt speakers. I have the pair here on another rig and would like to have a set for the K3, however I mostly use a headset with the K3 as it is my main DX rig.

Seriously, this is a big can of worms discussed before.

It depends on your hearing preference and whether you need two speakers for diversity.

A stereo plug is recommended because the k3 ( if that's the rig) has a stereo jack.

I've used small speakers, a Kenwood filtered speaker, and currently using a large classroom pa speaker.

If I were purchasing dual speakers, I'd get the west mountain comm speaker set for about $40.

More and more like the Palstar one already mentioned if you've got the cash.
