Yes, I think I stand corrected.  They look the same, little things that plugs into USB port.  It sure does work good.  Came up running as soon as I plugged it in.

Re: [Elecraft] Fully automatic operation of the K3 and KAT500 during TUNE mode?

Tom Kruczek

Thanks for you comments. I did find statement in the KAT500 manual that the tuner can follow the K3's band-data, which coupled with memory storage, should be fine.

The KAT500 *does* have memories for "bins" with each band. The bins vary in
size - 10kHz for 160m, 100kHz for 10m, 200kHz for 6m, and 20kHz for
everything in the middle (I think).... it's just that there's no automatic
retuning based on frequency tracking within a band - auto-tune only happens
when the VSWR exceeds a (configurable) threshold - and then it will look for
settings stored in a nearby "bin".

Hi Tom,

Since I'm not an Elecraft employee, I can't make any official
statement ....
but from discussions on the field-test mailing list, I know that
further integration is being considered.

I'm not sure that frequency tracking within a band is in the plans,
though.
I don't know any detail about AUXBUS capabilities, but I believe that
the
K3
currently only provides band data (on band change), not frequency data
(on QSY within a band), on the AUXBUS.

Hi Fred. I also had the Pro but it burned up and LDG replaced it with the Pro II. It was still under warranty and LDG was very proactive - reading my mind for what I really wanted (but didn't ask) and providing excellent customer service. I have zero complaints.

FWIW, I think the Pro II is quieter, faster and smoother than the Pro and after having it for about a month, I don't have any issues at all. Still, the KAT500 was ordered back in May (when the Pro was sitting broken and unused) and I hoping it'll do the things I've mentioned.

The KAT500 *does* have memories for "bins" with each band. The bins
vary in size - 10kHz for 160m, 100kHz for 10m, 200kHz for 6m, and
20kHz for everything in the middle (I think).... it's just that
there's no automatic retuning based on frequency tracking within a
band - auto-tune only happens when the VSWR exceeds a (configurable)
threshold - and then it will look for settings stored in a nearby
"bin".

My Yaesu VL-1000 stored frequency data within the band for ones you had
previously stored, very nice feature to have. Perhaps one day we may have
something like it but for the price of a KAT500/KPA500 you can't complain,
I'm pleased.

K3 and KAT500 during TUNE mode?

Hi Tom,

Since I'm not an Elecraft employee, I can't make any official statement
....
but from discussions on the field-test mailing list, I know that further
integration is being considered.

I'm not sure that frequency tracking within a band is in the plans,
though.
I don't know any detail about AUXBUS capabilities, but I believe that the
K3
currently only provides band data (on band change), not frequency data (on
QSY within a band), on the AUXBUS.

N6ML...hello. Is your comment about the firmware update occuring an
"official" Elecraft SOD? I have a KAT500 already on order and having
the abitlity to press tune on the K3 (or the KAT500) as mentioned by
AC6JA are key requirements for me. As a K-Line owner, my goal is to
have an automatic station - at least as much as possible. Having one
button tuning and then be ready to go is very important and a key
differentiator.

Also, an early capability that was mentioned several months ago - and
I hope I remember it right, was that the KAT500 would follow the
receiver frequency, so that already stored memory's in the tuner would
be invoked without the need to transmit. This defintely caught my
attention and I hope this is in the firmware already or in plan?

I'm very interseted in comments on these questions.

Tom / W1TXT

That sort of integration is not implemented yet, but AUXBUS
communication will allow for it, so expect to see something along
the lines of what you describe in future firmware releases (both
KAT500 and K3).

Just wondering if the K3 and KAT500 are capable of fully automatic
TUNE operation?
What I mean is, is there any way you can just push the TUNE button
on the
K3 (or the KAT500 for that matter), have the K3 transmit a carrier
(25-30w), have the KAT500 tune the antenna, and then have the K3
AUTOMATICALLY go back into receive mode?
I believe the LDG tuners work this way.
I still have to manually initiate the TUNE sequence at the K3 and
then manually end the TUNE cycle by pushing TUNE again to get the
K3 back into receive mode.
Or am I doing it wrong? Let me know.
Other than that, I'm very happy with the tuner and it works great!
