When you bring up the KAT500 Utility, go to the Ports tab and click on Test Communications.   Thus to assure you have the communications, port number, and rate.  If there is an error here, the computer is not communicating with the KAT500.   Gotta find out why.   In Windows use Device Manager to check how the port is configured.  Normally 38,400, 8 bits, 1 stop, parity None, Flow control None. 

Then go to the Firmware tab and select "Copy New Files from Elecraft".  Once done, then select "Send Firmware to KAT500".  The KAT500 should have the AUTO LED flashing while the update is in process.  Usually takes about 30 to 45 seconds.
