I just downloaded both the latest Mac utility and the latest K3 firmware and it installed without a problem. I'm using (Mac OS 10.8.5)
Try downloading a fresh file from Elecraft, maybe it got damaged somehow. Also the cable, are you sure it's connected in the back, sometimes if they're not secured can drop out.
