Well said Jim, et al ... Consider the strap and pad a small insurance policy. The rate of immediate and latent failures from static damaged components are much less than circa 1980 +/- when I studied ESD, but not 100%. Why risk your investment?

It's a small investment.  Besides, you'll be able to use the mat and wrist strap down the road when you buy a P3 kit or whatever from Elecraft.  :-)
