Problem with Elad FDM-S2
Henk F.P. Pit
Hello group,
A friend of mine has bought a new Elad about three yours ago, because he saw mine working in my shack. For a year or so ago the blue led went on and off during the time he used the Elad FDM-S2, but it kept working during that time. Sometimes the led was on and for no reason sometimes it went off during using the Elad FDM-S2. For some reason the Elad FDM-S2 stopped working now. It does not appear anymore in the device manager. We swapped USB cables to rule out a bad USB cable and we also tried several computers. My Elad FDM-S2 is recognized by Windows without any problem, but his is not recognized with the same computer and USB cable. Any thoughts about what has happened with his Elad FDM-S2? What are our options? Kind regards, Henk - PH5HP - www.ph5hp.nl - henkpit@... |

Not sure about the actual problem, though I would say the intermittent LED is a known problem. Mine started working again after I took the S2 out of its case and reheated a few solder joints. But a short while later the LED again became intermittent. None of this has affected the radio itself. It's working fine, LED or not.
In your case, the troubleshooting does seem to point to a hardware problem. If you haven't done so already, why not open a support ticket with Elad? -- Bill / KG6NRV |

Can you provide details on the known problem with power LED? Mine stopped working 2 years ago and I replaced it. Now I notice that the LED has stopped working again. The rest of the radio works good. 73 Clint W7KEC On Wed, Mar 15, 2023, 2:45 PM Bill Alpert <billalpert@...> wrote: Not sure about the actual problem, though I would say the intermittent LED is a known problem. The power LED went bad in my QSF-6 several years ago. I have a S2 receiver and the power LED recently went bad. It had been powered up continuously for the past three years. The power LED is the 3mm type that is white when off and blue when powered on. Standard 3mm LEDs take about 2.5 volts power and 1 ma of current. The ones from Elad light up at about 2.1 volts. I checked the voltage at the LED and it was 1.8 volts. The replacement process takes no more than about 15 minutes.
Remove 4 rear case screws Remove 4 front case screws Remove the circuit board assembly from the case. Desolder the right hand lead of the LED so that the lead is free to move. The ground LED is connected to the ground plane of the circuit and it will be difficult to desolder. Cut the ground lead of the LED about 3/16" above the circuit board. Remove the LED. Bend the leads on the new LED to match the old LED. Cut off the ground lead of the new LED to about 4mm below the body of the LED Tin the ground lead sticking up from the circuit board. Tin the ground lead of the new LED. Slide the new LED into the positive hole on the circuit board. Position the LED to the same height as the USB LED. Solder the positive lead of the LED to the circuit board pad. Position the ground lead on the circuit board so that it touches the ground lead of the LED. Solder the two leads together. Check final position of the LED. Plug in USB cable and make sure the the LED lights up (I initially did not have a good connection on my ground lead). Install circuit board assembly into the case. Install eight case mounting screws. Keep the S2 powered off when not in sure. That should give a longer life to the LED. 73 Clint W7KEC |

Hello Bill, Thank you for your reply. No, I did not open a ticket with Elad yet, but I was planning to do that. the idea was asking here in the group first to see if more of us had the same problem and if it could be solved with having to sent it back to Elad. Hello I have a similar problem with S2 too. The hardware worked then suddenly not then after a few days worked again to die a few days later. I tried different cables plus different pcs but with no avail . Symptoms at the beginning Everything fine but no signals received, noise floor unusual low. Some time after that sw2 software reports Wrong serial number stating in demo mode. Since then is used a paperweight in my observatory.... I contacted someone from Elad USA but no response. Emil
