How Much Computer Power is Needed for Elad #fmd-s2

I've been having problems running my #FDM-S2 in emulation on my Mac*, so I've decided to invest in a Windows 10 box, my first such purchase in years. I'm not seeing any system requirements published on the Elad USA website, so I'm wondering if in need to invest in an i5 or i7 processor and/or 8 vs 16 GB RAM. |

once you decide x a BOX and Win10 the right thing is to think ahead.. My personal PC data: Win 10 64bit, Inter Core i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz, 16 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960. Don't go below this. Tomorrow you want, for example, install the Flight Simulator; you could have several difficulties. Nota: - Only buy a assembled Box-PC. - The Graphic card is important Raimund . |

If you are not well experienced in
Windows PC system building, I'd strongly recommend
a ready-to-go system, Windows 10 and *all* drivers correctly pre-installed, either by factory default (branded machines) or a trustworthy system builder, presumably more flexible with respect to component choice. For price performance: have a look at
AMDs 'Ryzen' CPUs, e.g. Ryzen-5 2600 or better/newer.
These *do not* have a Graphics engine integrated (except those with the suffix 'G')! You will need a discrete add-on graphics card of appropriate performance. For comparison purposes: look up the
various benchmark tables for CPUs and
Graphic cards at www.cpubenchmark.net Lastly, double-check that the PCs
cooling system is solidly efficient (CPU cooling system
plus housing fans). This 'feature' is often badly overlooked! For the CPU cooling I have made good experience with a liquid cooler for the CPU which transports the heat from the CPU to a radiator mounted under the top of the housing (housing has provisions/outlets for such a system) where a radiator fan(s) blows the heat through the radiator directly to the outside of the housing. Thus, heat, as a result of the CPUs dissipated power, is *not* spread across the interior of the housing. The cooling system has to be specd for the CPUs TDP! The PC I am relating to and which I
configured, is a high end gaming machine,
not mine :-)) , I'm not a gamer. The housing can take a full-size ATX motherboard. There are 3 large slow-spinning fans on
the front of the housing vertically
positioned one above the other. The liquid cooling radiator with its
fan is mounted under the top of the
housing (there are airflow openings along the top of the housing). The PSU (600 W) with its internal fan
sits at the bottom rear of the housing.
The Graphics card with its 2 integrated fans sits about in the center rear of the housing. These fans blow air out through the rear of the housing. The SSD plus the 3.5 inch HDDs are sitting in the inbound airflow of one of the 3 front fans. Plus there is one 12cm housing fan at
the top rear of the housing which
blows air out of the housing. The system has proven to be thermally
very safe and stable, running at
max. speed even under higher ambient temperatures (around 30C indoors, hot summers for the past 2 years). 73, Klaus, DK3QN

Hi Bill.
I see several replies to your question. They are all good answers. However, the recommended suites are more expensive than you need to afford. I see you are a mac person, so I will assume you do not plan on converting to windows for your regular uses. You do not need much Windows power to run SW2 in a very efficient way. I use an intel Pentium 2 core processor, running other Windows 7 or Windows 10. I have 4 GB of Ram in that computer. I run several ham radio applications simultaneously including the ones you mention. My CPU shows somewhere around 35% to 45% load when all software is running. Oh, and I certainly do not use any of those liquid processor coolers others mentioned. That is a heck of a lot more cooling needed than necessary if you go with a less advanced Intel or AMD processor. -- 73 de NN3V |

It depends what you are planning to do. If you like to record FM Broadcast band 6144 kHz wide spectrum during Sporadic E, an intel Pentium 2 core processor will surely not be sufficient. My Toshiba Intel Core i5-480M @ 2.67GHz – Benchmark 2413 is not even sufficient. My MSi Intel Core i7-4720HQ @ 2.60GHz - Benchmark 8016 is doing the job nicely.

its an old Herbivore, but does the job great, and no stuttering. u do not need the kind of pc, that costs same as a car, has fancy cooling and special coolants, de-Icers defo not needed, u ain’t launching rockets😂 My £90.00 gbp laptop runs the programs u want easily and more for pennies |

Just wait and see what happens when you
need to get Win 10 installed on your machine,
Win 10 Home preferably. Where MS 'dumps' updates onto your machine unasked. Some are/have been *very* big updates which just make your system perfomance 'suck' during the process. And it can be a quite lengthy process on such a machine. Good luck. Klaus, DK3QN

Wonder what kind of problems you are having running FDM-S2 in emulation on your Mac? FWIW, I run the FDM-S2 software on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) with a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 processor using Windows 10 on the Parallels Desktop. Bill I’m a Mac guy that succumbed to needing a radio PC in the shack. First thought was I was going to use it exclusively to run Elad software and not even connect it to the network and just isolate it from all the plagues that beset Microsoft products. I have since limited it to running ELAD software and WSJT-X and a couple CPS programs for my DMR radios with WiFi as needed. It is an HP all in one I picked up at Costco for about $500. It is a 64 bit windows 10 Home, touch screen, 8GB Ram, AMD A8-7410 APU with AMD Radeon R5 Graphics card. It has the ability to send HDMI to a second monitor. So far it has handled everything I have thrown at it and can send a second monitor to a 49” Fire TV on the wall that also runs my Geochron. If your intending to maximize your use of the ELAD software with multiple screens you might want something more. I didn’t want to invest in a lot of PC extras because I have my 27” iMac and PowerBook in the office and run WSJT-X on different radios with the macs as well as some Mac RT Systems software. I connect the PC to WiFi when I use the ELad for digital so WSJT-X can communicate with PSK Reporter and I always time sync before I use WSJT-X, a couple time I have run TeamViewer on the PC and take my Laptop into the house when I need to spend XYL time but working DX remotely . This setup has worked for me for over a year without complaint. Since I am not adding a lot of new task to the PC and everything works the way I want, I do not run updates and have my firewall blocking most ports to the PC. I am sure others that are more knowledgeable of PCs would suggest higher level processors and Ram but thought you would want to know that a minimum setup would work adequately until you find you need more. 73 Craig KA6RWL |

I am also a Mac man. My solution was simple, install windows 10 on my Macbook and iMac, running under parallels. Works just fine. Alway run WSJT on MacOS, and use windows for FDM-SW2 and a few other programs.

Frequencies don't synchronize or Skimmer doesn't display any frequency at all. Even with Skimmer out of the picture, if I go into the FDM-S2 advanced menu and set the radio for max bandwidth, I have problems with FM Stereo broadcasts becoming distorted.

It's a bit funny how many Macs are running Windows for our SDRs. I use Bootcamp and haven't had any problems since starting with XP at first with a Perseus. I have 2 27" iMacs. I'm up to Win 8.1 and W7/64 bit now. It just works every day for year after year. It's nice to have 2 computers in 1. I am running using Paralles. Only issue I find is that you have to chose whic OS the USBs are connected to before starting, then don’t plug them in until W10 has started.

I'm using a second-hand PC with a reasonable build quality at my listening QTH, the 9 year old HP Elitebook 8570p running Win7
My only beef with this otherwise very competent old machine, is the slow hard drive. Handling massive files for number crunching can be challenging, but the SW2 software with the DUOr works like charm. Avoiding forced Win10 updates puts a smile on my face almost every day. :-) Anders H. SM6-8439 |
