Hello

yes it could the flash drive, but 3 different ones?

lets assume it is..i do not have the oe one, radio second hand but as new condition with box all other oe leads, The seller was a valve and old radio man, ie ww11 stuff..I do not think he opened up the radio. There is zero dust in it around the fan pa.signs of little use, he said he hated it..
so i am hoping it is not broken.

he does not have the pen, so can anyone tell me the make and model of the oe pen please?

or any other ideas what i could be doing wrong?

in the mean time i am flash pen hunting!!

Or - to muddy the water a little more :-) there is another alternative. It's now possible to buy buffers which are insensitive to logic levels, certainly within the usual 1.8 - 5V range and produce a logic-level output determined by the o/p Vdd. I can't remember part numbers off the top of my head, but I have used them without trouble in a recent design.

Re your other points

2. I have to check out the Serial1 of the Mega as I have not done much programming with this board. Is this just a second version of TX/RX pins 0 & 1 serial?
Yes - the Mega has a number of ports which makes things easy and you dont need to use SortwareSerial.

Key functions seem to be "recvWithStartEndMarkers()" and "readELADfrequency()", right? These get & send ASCII characters to the DUO. Just as you would if using USB CAT.
Yes thats right all they do is send and receive from the nominated port which in my case is Serial1 on Mega pins 18/19

The nicest, cleanest buffer is just direct to two pins of another logic device running from a 3.3V rail.  You can't over-volt, have outputs fighting or anything that could do damage.   Put a couple of 300 ohm resistors in each leg if you want to protect it further

Glad the sketch basically worked - should be good when you get a touch screen display

As it says in the heading of the sketch this works via an ELAD EXTIO-232 module which is at

I use a Waveshare RS232 serial interface from pins 18/19 ( Serial1 ) on the Mega . The EXTIO-232 also supplies a Icom voltage which drives my antenna switch although this function could also be derived from the frequency info on the serial info ( as I do for the K3)

The sketch also works well on the CAT connection via a Hobbytronics USB Host module.

Personally I am not happy with making a 'direct' connection into DUO on EXTIO pins 7/8 without some form of buffer when I am playing around with external bits of electronics. When I understand how things work a bit better I will give it a try direct from an Arduino via an appropriate level shifter if necessary.

Hope that clarifies things a bit

Hi it still could be the flash drive. The special one provided by Elad always works! Plenty of trouble with other ones just saying. 73 Mike vk3xz

HANG ON!!

Just gone back to an earlier post of yours Neil and yes code is same...so  no need to send over as i have the correct bin..( though different from code you show in last post.)

So now..what is happening? Y will not the duo firmware work??

Hello again Neil

finally got powershell to work..using windows powershell ise.

the hash is totally different from one you posted (assuming you sent rx firmware .)

it says sha256 c1886e4eef........etc..

nothing like your code!

Would  you mind directly replying to me with an email containing your  tx and rx bins as they seem to be different from mine..( mine downloaded from elad..) please!!!

as you can tell ( its 1.30am.) not given up yet, but now totally run out of ideas of whats going on..

i do hope the updates actually help once i manage to upload them!! But one suspects not..( seeing as how this seems to be going.)

Oh dear.  How about get-filehash in powershell? I'm using W10 Home 2004. This isn't helping with the main problem though, sorry.  The firmware versions you are running worked fine when I was on those, although I wouldn't use them with a recent SW2

The file hashes are a good way to confirm that two files are EXACTLY the same, not just the same length.  On Windows 10 you can right-click a file and ask it to generate a SHA hash.

and it is guaranteed by the algorithm that the hash obtained is unique to the pattern of bytes in your file.  You can also use Get-FileHash() in later versions of Powershell to do the same thing. Useful to confirm that an executable has not been tampered with.

Too tired to think of solutions to try next sorry!

i have no idea what is going wrong now..can both rx and tx programable ports on duo be broken?? THis i dont think can be so.

i must be doing something wrong!! But what????

any help would be welcomed!

to recap..following instructions to the letter.
using fat32 formatted flash drive ( in fact tried 3. All 4gb or less.)
known good lead..
using duorx or tx bins.they are on root of flash drives.  As in inplug into pc and it sees them without anything infront of.
i plug in lead and flash drive.i plug in power lead. I press program button. I power up.....red led comes on....i release button....1- 2 seconds later green leds flash quickly....duo then  boots up to standalone ( slowly after 5-10 secs ) no rx...5 mins go by..same...power off duo..unplug flash drive....power up duo.....all good BUT still rx 1.24..not updated..

One more:

Make sure you'll connect the micoUSB to the DUOs internal receptacle the right way!

MicroUSB is a 'shi*' kind of connector as far as correct orientation goes.
In the case of the DUO (at least my unit) the internal microUSB socckets are
rather difficult to determine orientation-wise! Watch out for this!

when back will check size of bins, but yes if memory serves, one was 588kb and one 800kb..( may be wrong, can not check yet.)

also bought a new micro to usb adapter cable to try..

as it does not work on tx or rx I suspect it is something i am doing wrong..

i extracted the files fully i hope before transferring to flash sticks.

will report back once back home.

simon

one other thing..

with duo just connected to power.NO ANTENNA no usb etc..noise floor -120
but if switch on duo att noise floor -108..(s3)
Is this just some weird way duo works??

Check your microUSB to USB cable for a 'full-size' USB connection!

Man, I have updated my DUO many times since I'd aquired it second hand.

I had several instances when it would not update RX and TX FW. It then was
due to especially microUSB to USB adapter cables which only (!!!) provided
Voltages!

I finally bought a 4GB USB memory stick which has an USB 2.0 plug on one side
and a microUSB plug on the other. No probs any more since then!

My Gosh, maybe you do not know:

There are USB to microUSB cables that only provide VOLTAGE!

Their purpose is to charge (!!!) devices (e.g. cellular phones) with microUSB
sockets.

Make sure that you don't use one of these! CHECK IT!

You'll need an adapter or cable adapter providing ALL of the USB lines.

Both of mine show around -118dBm/-119dBm in USB/LSB at 2700Hz bandwidth with nothing connected, and same with coax and a dummy load.  12dB more than those with the attenuator on as expected.

When the attenuator is switched in, it has nothing to attenuate.  But the software thinks it is attenuating a real input signal so raises the reading by 12dB, the value of the attenuator, to compensate for what it thinks might be a real signal.    As it's quantising noise and unaffected by the attenuator, the apparent value rises .

Current release status page is at http://sdr.eladit.com/FDM-DUO/Firmware%20Releases/ELAD_FDM_DUO_Release_Status_2019_02_08%20-%20EN.pdf

Usually the only things needing firmware updates are RX, TX and UI, the USB and FPGA haven't changed for many years.

What is the file size of the bin files you have on the stick Simon? Should be 570740 for fdmduorx.bin, with a SHA-256 hash C1886E4EEF36DC7E6AF7EF3837A21375746A386670B796B14E31C7AD91CAB226

fdmduotx.bin is 818484 bytes, SHA256 hash F19CB8F4E28F45FF0FA52771DB7D644977AE44090B07C7CA89D14F24A848B61A

Are the sticks formatted using something other than FAT32?

Only time I've had problems is with an NTFS formatted stick and one that was very large.  The ones I use now are 8GB, FAT32
