Subject: [WTFDA] FM DXing Questions for the Elad FDM-S2

Since last season, I’ve migrated to a newer, faster computer running Windows 10 for my FM DXing. Using both the Airspy and the Elad FDM-S2 SDR. Have several questions about using the FDM-S2 most effectively for FM DX:

1.) What is the optimum file size for I/Q recordings of the FM Band?

2048 gets you 1 minute capture files at 6MHz bandwidth. 4096 gets you 2 minute files. Bigger than that is probably asking for trouble. I went back to 2048 since I’ve had trouble with recording. No idea if that has helped.

2.) What frequency should I set the radio on for recording during an E-Skip opening to best utilize the bandwidth available?

I use 4 LO center frequencies to capture the FM dial in 4 chunks. It also gives 5.2MHz bandwidth with no rolling off of signal at the edges.

90.1 (+/- 2.6MHz)

94.5 (+/- 2.6MHz)

99.9 (+/- 2.6MHz)

105.3 (+/- 2.6MHz)

3.) Is it possible to record “continuously” daily over a 18 hour period—and have yesterday’s recordings erased automatically? In other words, I’d like to be able to record on a daily basis—and review recordings only when e-skip has been detected.

Sure, set up a simple set of command line “del C:\elad\recordings\*.*” script to run every day at a time when you know you would have had a chance to make the decision to keep or delete the recordings. Use Windows Task Scheduler to run the simple script at a certain time - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/schedule-task#1TC=windows-7

4.) I’d like to use RDS Spy to record RDS signals that may be detected during the overnight hours in order to do some meteor scatter DXing on clear frequencies.

How can I interface the Elad FDM-S2 with RDS Spy? (Step by step instructions if they’re available would be great.)

See attached. The only thing I forgot to put in that doc is that to the right of RX1 are 2 volume controles. Vol1 is for the audio you hear from the ELAD. Vol2 controls the audio fed to RDS Spy. I find that level set to around 67% to be perfect. Your PC could be different. Adjust as necessary.

5.) Anything else I need to know in order to maximize the use of the Elad for FM DXing?

Too wide open of a question. I’ve also attached a doc on how to install an old style S-Meter. Great fun but completely unnecessary.

Any and all assistance greatly appreciated!

You need to identify the DUO audio devices, then tell WSJT-X which is the input and which is the output to use. You should see the devices in the Windows Device Manager - it might take a bit of experimentation, but it is pretty much the same as with WSJT, you identify which device number is the DUO input device and which is the DUO output device, and tell the program which to use for send and which for receive.

Then you need to tell WSJT/WSJT-X *not* to use CAT for PTT, but to use RTS on your CAT port. Then just set menu 54 on your DUO to PTT+RTS.

For extra flexibility, I use Virtual Audio Cables so I can have multiple programs looking at the audio output of the DUO. To get running, you don’t need that extra complexity.

For convenience, rather than using the sound card output stream, I use the AUX stream via a VAC, then I can control the audio to my speakers separately from the audio going to WSJT.

Other audio sharers are available! VAC is not freeware.

If you get stuck, just ask on here and one of the many WSJT/WSJT-X users will help out. It always confuses me that the input and output streams of WSJT seem the wrong way round, but then I’m easily confused.

Hello for 2nd post. On WSJT-X I have not found documentation for config on the DUO - however I did find this thread. Is there any document available on understanding what to do?

So far, I have got CAT control working on WSJT-X. I've attached what the WSJT-X waterfall looks like, and there is no decode. I've also attached the SW views. Just looking for the basic set up, I take it I need to set up something in SW2?

Also, I have all three USBs connected to the radio and pc. Do I need something on the accessory output? I was thinking I wouldn't need it.

Re: New - 2 questions on firmware updates

Hi Patrick, the COM port depends entirely on the other ports in use on your PC. On mine it is COM3. So long as it works, the actual port number doesn’t matter. Make a note of it though, in case you need it another time for any other CAT software.

There has not been an FPGA update since 2.00 so you should be fine with that. The current version of the SW2 software is 1.120

New - 2 questions on firmware updates

Patrick Bouldin

Hi,

this is KM5L - I purchased the DUO yesterday at HamCom, very nice.

I have updated all the firmware per the instructions.

Question 1 - the instructions call to also update FGPA firmware. (page 92). I'm not seeing that update anywhere - and I noticed that it looks like the most current version is 2014. So since I got this yesterday is it likely this is not needing an update?

Question 2 - during the update of the UI Firmware the instructions (Page 93) said to notice the Com port would be 19. However, all I saw was com 5, so that's what I used in the FlashMagic update, and it seemed to work. Was it because I only had the one USB connected to the radio, on CAT? Maybe the instructions should have said to connect to both RX and CAT?  I'm just wanting to be sure what I did was ok.

Thanks and 73,
Patrick KM5L

Mark, do your scheduled recordings fail if they are set to a few hours ahead, but within the same calendar day? Does even the first recording of a set fail? Do any recordings in a sequence work after one or more failures, or does every recording fail?

Do you get zero byte files or no files at all? If you set for example recordings at 19:00, 20:00, 21:00 etc, do any of them work? What if you set 22:00, 23:00, 00:00, 01:00, do any work/fail? If only jobs after midnight fail, have you tried changing your PC time to say 12 hours behind and setting a recording at 13:00 today (which would actually be 01:00 tomorrow to see if there is some other scheduled process causing the failures?

If recordings work when set a few minutes or a few hours ahead, what is the cutoff beyond where they stop working? Is it a number of minutes/hours after the last use of the computer, or after a specific time each day, or totally random?

Is anything shown in the Windows event viewer logs around the time of the scheduled recording? Does it make any difference if you are running SW2 as an administrative user? If any recordings do succeed, who is the owner of the files according to Windows? Does anything change if you ask the scheduler to record to an external Flash drive? Does it make any difference what mode you are recording in? Have you tried doing a Wireshark capture with UsbPCAP to see what communications happen around the time of the scheduled recording?

Are there any maintenance jobs or File History or backup or cloud storage services running on the machine as scheduled overnight jobs?

I’ve never tried recording BC stations on a schedule, can you let me know all of the settings you are using for the recordings and your firmware/software versions and I’ll try to reproduce the faults using my second DUO. OK, it may only result in a “Me too” bug report, but even that would perhaps help the Elad dev team.

Help Getting Split Operation

nn3v_6@...

For several weeks I’ve requested help on this forum to try and get my FDM-DUO to perform satisfactorily when operating split. I’ve received some valuable insight, but overall I remain stuck with not being able to get FDM-DUO SW2 software to perform split correctly.

So at the risk of boring everyone, I am going to ask again. How does one operate FDM-DUO SW2 in split mode?

Here is my set-up:

1.      PC running Windows 7.

2.      When FDM-DUO is turned on, Windows system manager shows ELAD samplers, the COM port to the radio, and the FDM-DUO sound card drivers appear in the display.

3.      Windows sound control shows that the “playback” driver” as FDM-DUO Audio V 1.04 is “ready”.

4.      Windows sound control shows that the “recording” driver as “Microphone FDM-DUO Audio V1.04” is default device.

5.      I run HRD as my logging program.  CW and SSB work fine. When operating digital modes, I have the HRD MD-780 sound card options set in Device as Microphone (FDM-DUO Audio V1.04), and Output (transmit) as Line (FDM-DUO Audio V1.04).

6.      CW paddle, and Headphone Jack are inserted in FDM-DUO, and operate normally. The headphone mike connection is also inserted in FDM-DUO. SSB works correctly. Audio in headphone is detected in all modes if receive and transmission, also normal.

Under these settings CW, SSB, and Digital Modes work perfectly.

When I boot FDM-SW2, all operates normally. Simultaneously, FDM-SW2 and HRD rig control operate normally in controlling tuning, mode, etc. FDM-SW2 operates correctly in controlling band filter, mode, and several other rig control functions not available in HRD Rig Control.

With FDM-DUO SW2 I can command RX1 as well as RX2, RX3, and RX4. With RX1 selected, and RX2 also selected and designated as the TX slice receiver I transmit on the RX2 selected frequency. The RX1 selected frequency remains as selected. With RX2 designated as TX while RX1 is set to receive, RX2 transmits on the RX2 frequency. This appears to be normal split operation setup.

This is what I expect up to this point, but here is where the difficulty starts.

Under those conditions I CAN’T get the headphone stereo sounds to give me RX1 in one ear, and RX2 in the other.

So I CAN’T work split.

Nothing I tried to date resolves this matter in spite of some comprehensive assistance from this group.

I’ve been told that in order to work split using FDM-DUO SW2, the headphones must be inserted in the PC and NOT the radio headphone jack.

In addition, I’ve been told that the driver assignments on the PC must be changed to use the PC sound card as the audio processor so the split can be heard as one would expect.

This has not worked for me either. And when I try to do this and run HRD the digital mode transmissions do not work.

What am I missing?

Can someone help?

Hi, thanks. This works a treat!

Obviously the usage could be bit more intuitive, but hopefully this will not be needed often.

Re: Windows 10 audio problem

No matter which card you are using you should try to reset your audio settings to default.

- Do a right click on the loudspeaker symbol on the right bottom of the screen
- select the entry for playback devices (the second from the top)
- select the device you are using for audio output
- select properties
- disable all extensions
- click restore default on the bottom (Standard wiederherstellen in German)
- do the same for advanced settings (farmost right tab, erweitert in German)

Maybe you have changed a setting here when you tried to fix your audio output.

One more remark: Windows 10 runs just fine, unless you mess up or have upgraded from a flawed system. In this case a fresh install will help to fix things. Just upgrading a system that has been running for years maximizes potential problems.
