FDM-DUO broken by power interruption to DUO-ART

Mark EI3KD

I just wonder if anyone has seen this failure before, and anything I can try to fix it, before I send my FDM-DUO back to Elad:

My FDM-DUO was connected to, and powered by, my DUO-ART 60, when the mains power to the DUO-ART failed - a simple disconnect, no mains voltage spike or anything, and the FDM-DUO was in RX. When the mains power was reinstated the FDM-DUO RX had "failed" - indicating a constant S9+20dB noise floor. TX, as far as I've tested it, seems ok.

I've tried resetting the FDM-DUO settings to factory default with no change, and also tried it completely disconnected from the DUO-ART on a separate PSU - again no difference. I've also tried exercising every relay I can think of in the FDM-DUO, with no success.

Both the FDM-DUO and the DUO-ART are using current firmware.

I'm extremely disappointed this can happen, because the scenario of mains failure seems a reasonable possibility - It seems likely that the DUO-ART 12V output (or something on EXT-IO?) has "spiked" and killed the DUO :(

Others might like to beware of this possibility!

Regards, Mark

If you break out the mic socket PTT on the back of the DUO and use that for a footswitch or external mic switch, doesn't it transmit OK using the advanced TX?

Easy to test by setting Menu 32 to USB then using the hand mic as PTT only, and using a signal source from something in the PC, perhaps via a virtual audio cable.  OK, the PTT light on the advance panel doesn't light up, but the rest of SW2 is aware it is on TX.

I usea breakout box to connect my Heil headset and a footswitch, you could plug the Shure PTT into an adaptor via the RJ45 easily enough, I should think.

yes i can wire shure mic into audio in on pc to allow the tx adv features to work ( compression etc.)

Hi, thanks for the answer ! That has been my trouble too when using FDM-S2 with SDR Console and Server version 3. That's why I was asking about version 2 of SDR Console + Server, which gives a smooth remote connection with FDM-S2. Simon has stopped updating version 2, but can this be on the things-to-do-list for Elad ? In such a case I would purchase an FDM-S3, as it seems to a real treat for a DXer.

Franco and his team did (and are doing) an excellent job with this outstanding concept.

There are some unique applications of which "the community" dreamed for decades, first opf all: to record and play seamlessy an up to 20+ MHz wide range onto internal and even external harddisk. This is nothing but a game-changer in serious DXing.
Thanks to the 16-bit concept and Elad's stunning experience in getting this really onto the road, you may do unattended recording of this range for 24 hours (resulting in a file of 8.5 TB) on HF as well as on VHF. I did this numerous times without any problem.

On my website https://dk8ok.org/ you may see some examples. The most recent ones deal with VHF (OIRT as well as FM), also with a couple of audio clips.

Hi

That sounds perfect..

Where and how might I get hold of one please?

Hi Simon,

I have a control circuit board that takes the band signals from the Duo/S2 and converts them to BCD signals and individual relay control signals.  You could could use that board to auto bandswitch an external amplifier.

Hi

making a 50-100w amplifier to drive my big valve amp..

is there an easy way to have sw2 or similar software auto switch bands or am i going to have to do it by a manual rotary type switch?

I think there is but not sure how.( after all  elad make a standalone bandpass filter.)

thank  you for reading.Simon

DUO- ART ATU. range . #duo-art

David KK7SS <d3j452@...>

I couldn't find the answer in the User Manual so I asked ELAD Support..

Here's Vianneys' answer"

"The impedance matching range of the DUO-ART ATU is about 6 to 1000 ohms up to 10 meters, and about 16 to 150 ohms for the 6 meters band."

Which is great :-)  I can now dispose of my Palstar AT1KM and At-500..

That will free up SO much space on my table  :-)

I am putting all my "utilities" type monitoring (WSPR, HFDL, etc) on inexpensive SDRs hooked up to (Debian) single board computers that I can monitor through a web interface.

This leaves my FDM-SW2 and, in the future, hopefully an S3 and TMate as my primary "listening for pleasure", "audio DX", and "just mucking around" machines.  (All of this financed by selling the NRD-545.)

I would love to have nice (i.e. elegant, clean) software to operate the Elad SDR(s) on a MacOS. It's my personal "native operating system", since its early 1980s(!) predecessors, and it would be a great pleasure.

I have grown to hate mucking around with Win 7 and 10, and would like nothing more than to dump a couple of old PC boat anchors at the electronics recycling!

Hello, Vince, If you are using an indoor antenna (becoming more of a necessity these days.) I would strongly advise checking out your refrigerator, particularly if it is one of these  microprocessor, temperature controlled types. I was plagued with a recurring noise and traced it to the ‘fridge.
Fortunately a simple “cure” with a couple of clip-on ferrites on the power lead, as close as possible to the cabinet, or maybe a few turns through a toroid would suffice.  Good luck

What balun/ferrite setup would you recommend to help with noise, inc antenna, power supply ac/dc and pc/laptop?

Hi all just purchased an Elad Duo Art 120 +atu, and everything is working fine, I just have one question if I may, When I am within the band (I'm in GB) the waterfall and spectrum are excellent however when I go out of band even my a couple of Hz the screen goes totally white, 1 is this normal? 2 is it possible to get the waterfall working for general RX (Out of band) I do not want to transmit at all but it would be nice to look around when the bands are quiet.

Thanks Adrian 2E0ERO

Interesting.  I just created a new standard user as a Local account (not Microsoft cloud account).

I set up and started SW2, and it all worked correctly with no error messages.  It created the FDM-SW2 folder for that user in the default location

So it looks like no admin privileges are necessary to *RUN* SW2 for local accounts on Windows 10 version 1903, so long as you don't change the default location of the installation (C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAD\ELAD FDM-SW2) and the data folder (C:\Users\test\Documents\ELAD\FDM-SW2).  I'm sure that installing or updating the software would result in UAC prompting for admin privileges

If the software is installed somewhere else other than the default, or pointed at a different data folder (such as  c:\ELAD), then it certainly could need admin privileges to run it. It might also be different in the Pro/Enterprise variants of Win10.  This is just a home user installation.

Paul, I've postponed this task until now, to give me time to finish my shack @ home. So now downloaded 'Bandplan US 2.0'. The app connects to the radio but will not allow me to write to the radio.
" FDM-DUO firmware version not enabled to update bandplan"
I look through the manual for a setting to allow this and only found "menu 80" but not sure I'm on target here and don't want to brick this puppy.

Can you help here...

PS:
I reset the radio to factory defaults and the current firmware versions are:
