Automatic Generation of Tourist Maps

Floraine Grabler Maneesh Agrawala Robert W. Sumner Mark Pauly
University of California, Berkeley Applied Geometry Group, ETH Zurich

Abstract
Tourist maps are essential resources for visitors to an unfamiliar
city because they visually highlight landmarks and other points of
interest. Yet, hand-designed maps are static representations that
cannot adapt to the needs and tastes of the individual tourist. In this
paper we present an automated system for designing tourist maps
that selects and highlights the information that is most important
to tourists. Our system determines the salience of map elements
using bottom-up vision-based image analysis and top-down web-
based information extraction techniques. It then generates a map
that emphasizes the most important elements, using a combination
of multiperspective rendering to increase visibility of streets and
landmarks, and cartographic generalization techniques such as sim-
plification, deformation, and displacement to emphasize landmarks
and de-emphasize less important buildings. We show a number of
automatically generated tourist maps of San Francisco and compare
them to existing automated and manual approaches

The Great War and Modern Mapping:

WWI in the Map Division by Christopher Alario, Map Division

intern, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building

FROM New York Public Library

"With the passing of the centennial of World War I

there has naturally been a lot of interest in the conflict.

Here at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building we have

an exhibit of WWI propaganda as it related to the

American involvement in the conflict in “Over Here:

WWI and the Fight for the American Mind”

(now extended to August 15, 2015, so get in and see it).

And at the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division

we have no shortage of maps of all kinds that date

from the war.

Among the hundreds of maps from the Great War, you'll

find commercial maps produced for sale to the general public,

pictorial propaganda maps, newspaper maps intended to

illustrate the unfolding conflict, and military maps produced

for a variety of purposes including training, planning offensive

and defensive operations, troop dispositions and more.

The languages printed on the map mirror the international

range of the conflict."

This certainly is a resource that is important to dark tourism

and tourism in general.

Historic Central Park Maps by Artis Q. Wright, Specialist II,

Stephen A. Schwarzman Building,

Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division July 6, 2015

FROM New York Public Library

"Several of these maps were produced while the park was

still under construction depicting the progress of the hundreds
of workers who helped transform a rural section of the island
of Manhattan that once included swamps, stony ridges and
stable working class communities (such as Seneca Village) into
Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux’s rus in urbe masterpiece.
The collection includes a diverse range of cartographic material
including well-known topographic surveys depicting the landscape
before the park’s construction as well as numerous maps published
after its completion with indexes that list amenities and places of
interest.

Although the majority of the maps in the collection are in a sense
“tourist maps,” designed to be used by the general public, a small
number were created with a more specific audience in mind.
Map of the Central Park: Printed for the Department of Public Parks
is a recent acquisition and is a great example of a map in which the
intended user was not a day-tripper but the scores of landscapers,
gardeners and laborers responsible for the monumental task of
irrigating, pruning and seasonal care of the park’s various types of
vegetation."

NYC Rapid Transit in Maps, 1845-1921:

The Street Railroads of New York and Vicinity :

by Artis Q. Wright, Specialist II, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building,

Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division

April 3, 2015

FROM New York Public Library

"Like many busy New Yorkers sometimes it’s easy for me

to take for granted the existence of the numerous subway,

bus and commuter train lines that connect the various nodes

of this amazing metropolis. However, similar to its forest of

skyscrapers and unique street grid, NYC’s rapid transit system

plays a crucial role in the continued success of the nation’s

de facto capital of art, design and finance.

We are fortunate that the Map Division’s collection includes

scores of antiquarian NYC rapid transit sheet maps which may

be used by transit enthusiasts to document the beginning

stages of the city’s extensive urban railway network. Yet I

would argue that we can gain a deeper understanding of the

development of the city’s public transit infrastructure simply

by examining nine maps published between 1845 and 1921.

These maps document the transformation of a humble mass

transit system dependent on slow moving horse drawn

omnibuses constrained by traffic into a system that had its

own right of way powered by steam engines in Upper

Manhattan in the more rural parts of the young city and horse

drawn train cars in the densely built-up district of Lower

Manhattan.

These maps also show us that most of the railroads that ran at

street level beginning in the mid-1800s would eventually be

superseded by elevated train lines in the final decades of the

19th century; fortunately many of these elevated trains would

be replaced in the first half of the 20th century by electric

powered subway cars racing a few feet below the city streets."

Sanborn Maps From Wikipedia

Sanborn Maps is an American publisher of historical and

current maps of US cities and towns. The maps were

initially created to estimate fire insurance risks.

The company's maps are frequently used for historical

research, and for preservation and restoration efforts.

Description

"The Sanborn maps themselves are large-scale

lithographed street plans at a scale of 50 feet to one inch

(1:600) on 21 by 25 inches (53 by 64 cm) sheets of paper.

The maps were published in volumes, bound and then

updated until the subsequent volume was produced.

Larger cities would have multiple volumes. In between

published volumes, updates (new drawings of new or

altered buildings or lots) were created and sent out to be

pasted on top of the old maps (referred to as ‘slips’) to

reduce expense and still preserve accuracy.

The map volumes contain an enormous amount of

information. They are organized as follows: a decorative

title page; an index of streets and addresses; a ‘specials’

index with the names of churches, schools, businesses etc.;

and a master index indicating the entirety of the mapped

area and the sheet numbers for each large-scale map

(usually depicting four to six blocks); and general information

such as population, economy and prevailing wind direction.

The maps include outlines of each building and outbuilding;

the location of windows and doors; street names; street and

sidewalk widths; property boundaries; fire walls; natural

features (rivers, canals, etc.); railroad corridors; building use

(sometimes even particular room uses); house and block

number; as well as the composition of building materials

including the framing, flooring, and roofing materials; the

strength of the local fire department; indications of sprinkler

systems; locations of fire hydrants; location of water and gas

mains; and even the names of most public buildings, churches

and businesses."

waves. The human eye is sensitive to the visible wavelenghs of

this spectrum; we can see color, or reflected light, ranging from

violet to red.

Today, Landsats 7 and 8 “see” and record blue, green, and red light

in the visible spectrum as well as near-infrared, mid-infrared, and

thermal-infrared light that human eyes cannot perceive (although

we can feel the thermal-infrared as heat). Landsat records this

information digitally and it is downlinked to ground stations,

processed, and stored in a data archive.

It is this digital information that makes remotely sensed data invaluable.

“Observations from Landsat are now used in almost every environmental

discipline,” explains John Barker, a Landsat 7 Associate Project Scientist

and award-wining calibration expert.

Landsat data have been used to monitor water quality, glacier recession,

sea ice movement, invasive species encroachment, coral reef health,

land use change, deforestation rates and population growth.

Landsat has also helped to assess damage from natural disasters such as

fires, floods, and tsunamis, and subsequently, plan disaster relief and

flood control programs."

The National Map Small-Scale Collection FROM USGS

"The National Map is now offering a collection of small-scale datasets

that can be downloaded for free. Although the 1997-2014 Edition of

the National Atlas of the United States was retired in September 2014,

The National Map recognizes the importance of continuing to make a

collection of the small-scale datasets, originally developed for the

National Atlas, available to users.

Small-scale maps have an advantage over large-scale maps when there

is a need to show a large area in a single view. This makes small-scale

maps an ideal solution for scientists, decision-makers, and planners

needing to provide a geographical context for the research projects.

Generally, certain geographical and feature details found in large-scale

maps are limited or omitted in small-scale maps. The choice of

small-scale maps always comes down to the intended use of the final

map.

The National Map collection of 197 small-scale datasets can be

downloaded at small-scale data download page . The National Map

small-scale web map and feature services can be accessed at WMS/WFS

TNM Small-Scale.

Even though the 1997-2014 Edition of the National Atlas has retired,

nationalmap.gov will continue to offer the Set of Dynamic Topographic

Maps Illustrating Physical Features. Additionally hundreds of printable maps,

which were developed for the National Atlas 1997-2014 Edition, can be found

at the Printable Maps link . All of these maps display the National Atlas logo

and are considered a legacy product.

The National Map Small-Scale website also link to Global Map, an international

effort by national mapping organizations to produce consistent and accurate

mapping data of the world at a scale of 1:1,000,000.

The National Map publishes two data collections at one million-scale: one for

Global Map users and one for National Map users. In terms of vector

geometry, the lines, points, and areas in these data collections are identical.

The difference is in the attributes assigned to these features."

Historical Topographic Maps - Preserving the Past FROM USGS

" In 2009, USGS began the release of a new generation of topographic maps

(US Topo) in electronic form, and in 2011, complemented them with the

release of high-resolution scans of more than 178,000 historical topographic

maps of the United States. The topographic map remains an indispensable

tool for everyday use in government, science, industry, land management

planning, and recreation.

Historic maps are snapshots of the nation's physical and cultural features at a

particular time. Maps of the same area can show how an area looked before

development and provide a detailed view of changes over time. Historical

maps are often useful to scientists, historians, environmentalists, genealogists

and others researching a particular geographic location or area.

The goal of The National Map’s Historical Topographic Map Collection (HTMC),

which started in 2011, is to provide a digital repository of USGS 1:250,000 scale

and larger maps printed between 1884, the inception of the topographic

mapping program, and 2006. The National Geospatial Program (NGP) is

accurately cataloging and creating metadata to accompany high-resolution,

geo-referenced digital files representing the legacy lithographic maps.

These maps are either no longer available for distribution in print or are being

replaced by the new generation of US Topo maps"

http://nationalmap.gov/historical/index.html

USGS Topoview

TopoView highlights one of the USGS's most important and useful products,

the topographic map. In 1879, the USGS began to map the Nation's topography..

This mapping was done at different levels of detail, in order to support various

land use and other purposes. As the years passed, the USGS produced new map

versions of each area. The most current maps are available from The National Map.

TopoView shows the many and varied older maps of each area, and so is useful

for historical purposes—for example, the names of some natural and cultural

features have changed over time, and the 'old' names can be found on these

historical topographic maps.

This interface was created by the National Geologic Map Database project (NGMDB),

in support of topographic mapping program managed by the National Geospatial

Program (NGP). Geologic mapping and topographic mapping at the USGS have a

long tradition together (see 1888 report). The NGMDB project is proud to assist

the NGP in bringing these maps to the Web.
