Ariel Castro Kidnappings
Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ariel_Castro_kidnappings

“The Ariel Castro kidnappings took place between 2002 and 2004, when Ariel Castro kidnapped
Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Georgina "Gina" DeJesus and held them captive in his home
in the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The three girls were imprisoned
until May 6, 2013, when Berry escaped with her six-year-old daughter, to whom she had given birth
while imprisoned, and contacted the police.[3][4][5][6] Police rescued Knight and DeJesus and arrested
Castro within hours.

On May 8, 2013, Castro was charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape.[1][7]
He pleaded guilty to 937 criminal counts of rape, kidnapping, and aggravated murder, as part
of a plea bargain. He was sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison without the possibility of parole.[8][9]
On September 3, 2013, one month into his sentence, Castro died by suicide after hanging himself with
bed sheets in his prison cell.[10][11]

“Michelle Knight

Michelle Knight (born April 23, 1981) disappeared on August 23, 2002, after leaving a cousin's house.[41]
She was 21 years old at the time.[42] On the day of her disappearance, she was scheduled to appear in court
for a child custody case involving her son Joey, who was in the custody of the state.[41][43]

Following Knight's rescue, police acknowledged that limited resources had been spent on investigating her
disappearance, in part because she was an adult. Authorities believed that she had run away voluntarily due
to anger over losing custody of her son. According to Cleveland Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba, she was
"the focus of very few tips".[44] Some have criticized her removal from the National Crime Information Center database.
This event happened 15 months after she disappeared, so she was largely unknown prior to her rescue.
Cleveland Police and the FBI maintain that her inclusion or exclusion had no bearing on her rescue, however.[45]

Amanda Berry

Amanda Marie Berry (born April 22, 1986) disappeared on April 21, 2003, the day before her 17th birthday.[46]
She was last heard from around 8 p.m. when she called her sister to tell her that she was getting a ride home from
her job at a Burger King at West 110th Street and Lorain Avenue.[36] The FBI initially considered her a runaway
until a week after her disappearance, when an unidentified male used her cell phone to call her mother. He said:
"I have Amanda. She's fine and will be coming home in a couple of days".[47][48]

Berry was featured in a 2004 segment of Fox's America's Most Wanted (re-aired in 2005 and 2006), which linked
her to Gina DeJesus, who by that point had also gone missing in Cleveland.[49][50] Berry and DeJesus were profiled
on The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Montel Williams Show, where self-proclaimed psychic Sylvia Browne told
Berry's mother Louwana Miller in 2004 that her daughter was dead and that she was "in water".[51][52][53][54]
This pronouncement devastated her mother, causing her to take down pictures and give away Berry's computer.[55]
However, Miller continued to search for Berry before dying from heart failure in early March 2006.[49][56] Later that year,
on December 25, 2006, Berry gave birth to a daughter.[57] DNA evidence has confirmed that Castro was the father
of the child.[58][59]

Robert Wolford was a prison inmate who had lived in Tremont, and he claimed in July 2012 that he had information
about the location of Berry's body. He led police to an empty lot on Cleveland's West Side, where they conducted
a fruitless search.[49][60] He was sentenced in January 2013 to 4½ years in prison for obstruction of justice, making
a false report, and making a false alarm.[61]

Gina DeJesus

Georgina "Gina" Lynn DeJesus (born February 13, 1990) went missing at age 14.[62] She was last seen at a payphone
around 3 p.m. on April 2, 2004, on the way home from her middle school at West 105th Street and Lorain Avenue.
Figueroa and Castro's daughter Arlene had called Figueroa for permission to have a sleepover at DeJesus's house,
but Figueroa replied that they could not and the two girls parted ways.[63] Arlene was the last person to see DeJesus
before her disappearance.[64]

DeJesus was under the impression that Castro was picking her up to drop her off at home, and she trusted Castro
because she was friends with his teenage daughter. No one witnessed her abduction, and an AMBER Alert was not
issued, which angered her father. He said in 2006, "The Amber Alert should work for any missing child. ...
Whether it's an abduction or a runaway, a child needs to be found. We need to change this law".[60]

A year after her disappearance, the FBI released a composite sketch and description of a male suspect, described as
"Latino, 25 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 m), 165 to 185 pounds (75 to 84 kg), with green eyes, a goatee,
and possibly a pencil-thin beard".[65] According to court records, Castro was 5 feet 7 inches (1.70 m), 179 pounds (81 kg),
with brown eyes and a goatee.[66][67]

When friends and neighbours held a vigil to mark another year of Gina DeJesus' disappearance,
Ariel Castro was there, comforting her mother.

But Castro had held Ms DeJesus in his house in Cleveland, Ohio, for almost a decade, along with
Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and a girl born to Ms Berry in captivity in 2007.

He was sentenced in August 2013 to life imprisonment without parole plus 1,000 years, after pleading
guilty to 937 charges including aggravated murder, kidnapping, rape and assault that allowed him
to avoid the death penalty.

He was found dead in his cell at a correctional centre in central Ohio in the evening of 3 September.

'Regular guy'

When the charges against Castro emerged, neighbours in the heavily Hispanic, working-class area were
shocked. One said he had spent time with Castro socially.

Michelle Knight’s triumph over captor Ariel Castro: ‘He doesn’t define who I am’
Platte River Radio

(NEW YORK) — Michelle Knight had known unimaginable hardship long before she was abducted in 2002 at the age of 21,
then held captive and repeatedly raped and tortured for nearly 11 years by Ariel Castro, a school bus driver and local musician.

She’d fought to overcome what she says was the trauma of sexual abuse by a male relative, living on the streets and later losing
custody of her son.

She survived still when she escaped Castro’s grip in 2013 and was told by doctors that she had only days to live. She continued
fighting by facing her perpetrator in court. And, with time, she found love and created a new family to surround her.

“You can overcome all obstacles that stand in your way,” Knight shared in an interview with ABC News.
“Don’t let the darkness control your light in your life.”

Knight and the two other women who were kidnapped by Castro as teens, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus,
shared their stories of survival with 20/20.

Cleveland Kidnapping Survivor Michelle Knight Says 'Certain Smells and Light Fixtures'
Still Trigger Her 5 Years Later

Time
Michelle Knight has worked hard to move on with her life in the five years since she was freed after
more than a decade of brutal captivity in a Cleveland house. But some things still draw her back
to that dark time in her life.  “I do have triggers. Certain smells. Light fixtures with chain pulls,”
she said in a recent interview for NBC’s Megyn Kelly Today. The smells are all things that viscerally
remind her of her captor, Ariel Castro, and the brutal beatings he often inflicted on her after he
kidnapped her off a street in 2002.

“Knight was the first to be kidnapped in 2002 when she was 21. Castro kept her locked
in chains in his home for a year before he kidnapped Berry, who was 16 at the time.
In 2004, he abducted DeJesus, then age 14. For 11 years, he tortured, beat and raped the women.

Castro, 53, was convicted of kidnapping, rape and aggravated murder charges in connection
with their abductions. He was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years for his crimes.

After a month in prison, Castro committed suicide in his prison cell in September 2013.

Knight, 34, spoke this week about her life then and now, her fears and her hopes for the future.

The trio escaped May 6, 2013, when a neighbor heard Berry scream for help.

"It's hard for me to believe that I actually got out alive and I'm here," she said.
"Because there were days that I thought I wasn't going to make it."

Knight said that she had been told she didn't have very long to live because she had
a bacterial infection.

"And amazingly I actually survived it. And I'm here. I'm talking to everybody and
I'm giving hope to people." ”

The son of the Cleveland man who will spend the rest of his life in jail for imprisoning three women for a decade said his father received the "best possible sentence" for a violent streak he has witnessed since childhood.  I think that if he really can't control his impulses and he really doesn't have any value for human life, the way this case has shown, then behind bars is where he belongs for the rest of his life," he told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie in TODAY exclusive interview.  Castro said he will probably never visit his father in prison.  "I have nothing to say to him," he said.  Though he grew up in a house "with a lot of fear and violence," Castro said his father "wasn't a monster 24/7." The three women who were abducted — Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight — were taken from the Cleveland streets between 2002 and 2004. They were freed in May after Berry broke partway through a door of Castro's house and screamed for help while her captive was away.
Investigators say Castro beat them, raped them and sometimes chained them in the basement. Castro fathered a daughter, now 6, with Berry, authorities have said.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Charles Ramsey, the fast-talking dishwasher from Cleveland's Seymour Avenue,
has long been hailed as a hero for kicking out the bottom panel of his neighbor's storm door to help

free Amanda Berry from the home where she, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were locked up for

10 years. But his role was less dramatic than was originally portrayed, according to Amanda Berry

and Gina DeJesus' new memoir, "Hope: A Memoir of Survival in Cleveland," about their lives as

captives of Ariel Castro.Berry writes that she freed herself, though she credits Ramsey with

responding to her calls and initially kicking at the door panel and coaching her to do the same.

"Finish kicking it out, Mama," Ramsey said after retreating, according to the book.Berry writes that

while she was kicking the door, she was thinking, "Why doesn't he kick it in for me?  "He's just

standing there watching me," she writes. "Why won't anybody help me?   I start pounding at the

panel with my sneakers, kicking and kicking until finally I smash out enough of it for me to squeeze

through. I crawled outside and then reach in and pull [my daughter] out after me."

was found hanging in his cell and is believed to have killed himself, a prison official said Wednesday.
Ariel Castro, 53, had started serving a life prison term after being sentenced last month to life in prison
plus 1,000 years on his guilty plea in one of the country's most sensational criminal cases in recent history.
Castro was found in his cell Tuesday night, JoEllen Smith, Ohio department of rehabilitation

transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead  He had been in protective custody because
of the notoriety of his case, meaning he was checked every 30 minutes, but he was not on suicide watch,

One week after Amanda Berry’s abduction, Castro calls her family
Berry was missing for a week when her family received a late-night call from Castro,
who taunted them using Berry’s cell phone.  “He called and said, ‘I have Mandy,’ which,
nobody called her Mandy but [people] who knew her,” said Beth Serrano,   Berry’s sister.
“'She wants to be with me.'”  In 2003, the FBI was just starting to develop technology that
could track a cell phone’s  location if it was turned on. With that information, they were
able to narrow down that her phone had been used within a thirty to forty block area.
“We spent about a week, around the clock, in that area, hoping that this phone would
be used again,” FBI agent Tim Kolonik said. But Castro never used Berry’s phone again.
“That was the last we heard of anything,” Serrano said.

Cleveland kidnapping victim Michelle Knight continued discussing the disturbing details of her decade in captivity with
Ariel Castro in part two an exclusive interview that aired on Wednesday's Dr. Phil.  Knight revealed what happened when
additional victims Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus arrived and how she felt when she was finally free.  Knight talked
about her close relationship with DeJesus, explaining that she once tried to save her after a near-death experience.
Castro once made Knight eat two sandwiches with mustard on them, even though she's allergic to the condiment,
she explained. Her throat swelled up and she couldn't breathe.\  "The only thing that I could think was that I was dying
and there was no one to help me. And just at that point and time, I see a light. I'm already almost gone," she said.
"Gina picks me up into her arms and tells me to come back. …    I begged her to let me die, but she wouldn't let me do it.
I told her to just turn around and let me die, that I couldn't do it anymore."

Cleveland police criticised as city asks: why were women not found sooner?

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight leave hospital as neighbours insist they reported suspicious behaviour

The Guardian

https://tinyurl.com/yywwh26e

“Authorities were forced to admit on Tuesday they had twice visited a house in Cleveland where three women
were apparently held captive for a decade, as questions were asked about how the victims remained undetected
for so long.  Two of the women, who were teenagers when they went missing, had been the subject of long-running
national media coverage, and neighbours say they reported suspicious behaviour at the home over the years.
Police arrested three brothers, one of whom lived at the house in which the women were found. A six-year-old girl,
born to one of the victims after she had been captured, was also freed.  The mayor of Cleveland, Frank Jackson, stood
before the media at police headquarters and admitted that the case was disturbing. "We are happy that they are
returned to us. But we have several unanswered questions. Why were they taken, how were they taken and how did
they remain undetected in the city of Cleveland for this time?"  The ordeal of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and
Michelle Knight ended with a frantic 911 call on Monday afternoon, police said. The owner of the house,
Ariel Castro, 52, had gone out, and Berry managed to alert neighbours by hammering on the front door.
Police said they were at the scene within minutes and rescued the girl and two other women, Gina DeJesus and
Michelle Knight.”

Ariel Castro: Ohio prosecutors may seek death penalty for kidnap suspect

Officials say they intend to pursue charges of kidnap and sexual assault,
as well as aggravated murder, against 52-year-old

The Guardian

“Prosecutors in Ohio have said they may seek the death penalty in the case of the former school bus
driver accused of the kidnap and rape of three women held prisoner at his home for years.
Ariel Castro, 52, made his first court appearance on Thursday when a judge set bond at $8m.
The size of the bond means he is likely to remain in jail for some time. His court-appointed lawyer
said he was unemployed and had little money.  At a news conference later, county prosecutor
Timothy McGinty said that his office intends to pursue charges of kidnapping and sexual assault,
as well as aggravated murder, which could carry the death penalty.  The aggravated murder charges
would stem from the forced miscarriages that police say were suffered by one of the women at the
hands of Castro, 52, who is accused of holding them captive at his house in west Cleveland.
"The law of Ohio calls for the death penalty for those most depraved criminals who commit
aggravated murder during the course of a kidnapping," McGinty said.”

Police have said that a six-year-old girl found at the Cleveland house where three women

At a news conference in Cleveland, police deputy chief Ed Tomba said the child was the daughter
of Amanda Berry, who escaped from the house on Monday and alerted authorities  Officials
defended their handling of the case, saying that no lead had been left unfollowed in the 13 years
since the first victim disappeared.  Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were held inside
the house since they were in their teens or early 20s.  Knight disappeared in 2002, Berry in 2003

and DeJesus about a year after that. Officials say three brothers in their 50s are in custody.
One of the men, Ariel Castro, 52, lived at the house.  The women appeared to be in good health

and were taken to a hospital to be evaluated and reunited with relatives. They were released
from Metro Health Medical Center on Tuesday morning.

Ariel Castro's family speaks out on abusive past

AP

https://tinyurl.com/yyze3nkp

Ariel Castro, the man accused of holding Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus
captive for a decade in his Cleveland home,
also brutally beat and mentally abused the mother of his children, her relatives say.
Ariel Castro's daughter, Angie Gregg, said she and her sisters were not abused by Castro,
but he did abuse her mother, Grimilda Figueroa, who died of brain cancer in 2012.

"I've seen him basically stomp on her like she was a man," Gregg told CNN.
She also told CNN of peculiar behavior she now sees in a new light:

--"He would take forever to come to the door," when she visited.

--Castro interfered with family travel plans because he never wanted to leave his house for more than a day.

--He'd frequently play loud music during her visits.

Gregg recalls once asking to see her childhood bedroom, and Castro told her
"Oh, honey, there's so much junk up there.
You don't want to go up there," she said. At the time, she thought it was just "him being a pack rat."

<snip>

Relatives say that in 1996, Figueroa finally left Castro after he hit her for the last time.
After one particularly bad beating, Figueroa ran outside with one of her sons, crying out to neighbors
just as the captive women did.  "The neighbors went across the street to get her," Elida Caraballo said.
"And that was the last time she ever stepped in the house."

Prison System report confirms Ariel Castro suicide; jail guards to keep jobs

https://tinyurl.com/y26nxd4o

(WOIO) - The Ohio Prison Systems hired two experts who say in a new report that the deaths of Ariel Castro and Billy Slagle
were suicides and were not accidents. The State Prison System has released a 26-page report on prison suicides,

including the suicide of convicted kidnapper Ariel Castro.   Castro was sentenced to life, plus 1,000 years, for kidnapping

and sexually assaulting Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus while holding them captive  in his Seymour Avenue

house for over a decade.  Castro used a bed sheet to hang himself in his cell at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient,

Pickaway County, on September 3. He had been there one month.  Guards on duty at the time of Castro's suicide have been

given last-chance agreement to keep their jobs. If they mess up again,  they will be immediately fired.

[Read the entire document HERE] The guards didn't make some scheduled rounds and also falsified records.

The newly released report confirms the Franklin County Coroner's report that Castro's death was not an accident due to

auto-erotic asphyxiation.

For the first time since being rescued from captivity, Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus are speaking out

in a video message to the public.  Hennes Paynter Communications posted the video of the women at midnight on July 9.

The firm tells 19 Action News the video was at the request of the women to say thank you for the outpouring of support

since their May 6 rescue from a house on Cleveland's Seymour Avenue.  Knight, Berry and DeJesus all went missing a decade ago.

Knight disappeared in 2002.  She was 21.  Berry, 16 at the time, went missing in 2003 after she left work at Burger King.

DeJesus disappeared in 2004, while walking home from school. She was 14-years-old.  According to the statement released
early Tuesday morning, "People are recognizing them now as they go about in public,  so they decided to put voices and faces
to their heartfelt messages," said Kathy Joseph, attorney for Michelle Knight.  The statement goes on to say it was their decision
to relay their thanks in this way.

The size of the bond means Ariel Castro, 52, is likely to remain in jail for some time. His court-appointed

and remained silent during his arraignment at Cleveland municipal court. He avoided looking

at the gallery, which was packed with media and onlookers.  Police say the ordeal of Amanda Berry, 27,
Gina DeJesus, 23, and Michelle Knight, 32, ended on Monday when Berry seized a chance to break free
when Castro was out of the house. Berry hammered on the front door, attracting the attention of passers-by

Ohio authorities: Ariel Castro is girl's father

Ariel Castro, the man accused of holding three women hostage for about a decade in Ohio, fathered a child who was also rescued
from his house, US authorities have confirmed.  He has been charged with the kidnap and rape of Amanda Berry, 27, Gina DeJesus,
23 and Michelle Knight, 32.  A DNA test proved Ms Berry's six-year-old daughter, born in captivity, was his child, investigators said.
The four were rescued on Monday when Ms Berry escaped and raised the alarm.  Meanwhile, on Friday Ms Knight returned home
from hospital, the last of the three to do so.  Ohio prosecutors have said they plan to seek aggravated murder charges that could
carry the death penalty against Mr Castro, 52. The charges relate to alleged forced miscarriages.

for the second he was still making the television rounds as Amanda and Gina released their joint book
but as the third anniversary came around Ramsey said he didn't want to talk
and for the last three years he says he's been doing a lot of reading
and following the advice of a close friend.  "She said you know what?
You need to get back to where you were before you found them girls, humble, working,"
he recalled being told. "'That rock star s**t, save that for the rock stars.'

So that's what I've been doing, staying out of the way, no Facebook, no instagram, no twitter.

I've alienated myself."  His readings have been spiritual, "The Forgotten Books of Eden,"

among others trying to understand the origins of the evil that he says lived in his former neighbor Ariel Castro.

"Something just said watch him and watch him and watch him and I thought my paranoia was getting the best of me."

He said he would leave his job at Hodge's Restaurant where he was a dishwasher with a sick feeling.

"When I hit the top of the damn street I would start crying."  He returned to see the Castro house after it was torn down

a few months later but not since. He said he harbors resentment towards his old neighbors

who Ramsey has always felt were aware something was up.

"My attitude won't let me go to Seymour," he said. "So I stay away from it."

The brothers of the suspected Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro have revealed that he prevented them entering parts of the house

Pedro and Onil Castro, who were released from police custody last Thursday having been cleared of any involvement in the kidnappings,
have cast light on the methods used by their brother to disguise the fact that he had three young women and a child hidden
in the back of his home.   For 10 years no visitors were allowed to go further than the kitchen, and music was always playing
to obscure sounds in the house.  "He said he wanted to keep the heat in the kitchen because the gas bill. The radio was playing all the time,
if not the radio, the TV.   Something had to be on all time in the kitchen," Pedro Castro, 54, told CNN.
