History and Overview : Mural Arts Program

"Mural Arts was first established in 1984 as part of

the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network’s effort to

eradicate the city’s graffiti crisis. Artist Jane Golden

was hired to reach out to graffiti writers and redirect

their energies to constructive public art projects.

In addition to addressing the problem of graffiti,

Mural Arts’ collective mural-making processes

proved to be a powerful tool for generating dialogue,

building relationships, empowering communities, and

sparking economic revitalization. In 1996,

the Anti-Graffiti Network was reorganized and the

Mural Arts Program became its own entity. Soon after,

the nonprofit Philadelphia Mural Arts Advocates was

established to raise additional funds for the program,

making Mural Arts a unique public/private partnership.

The organization targets every neighborhood

in Philadelphia, each year enrolling 2,000 individuals in

its three programmatic initiatives and directly engaging

an additional 18,000 in its projects. The programmatic

initiatives include Art Education for youth; Restorative

Justice for inmates, those re-entering society, and victims

of violence; and Porch Light for those struggling with

mental illness, trauma, and addiction. Each of these

initiatives generates projects with themes and processes

relevant to their target constituencies. Mural Arts also

has a Community Murals department, which focuses on

creating projects in collaboration with community groups

and organizations; and a Special Projects department that

produces large-scale artworks meant to push the

boundaries of public art."

Wynwood Walls

About Wynwood Walls

"The Wynwood Walls was conceived by the renowned

community revitalizer and placemaker, the late Tony

Goldman in 2009. He was looking for something big to

transform the warehouse district of Wynwood, and he

arrived at a simple idea: "Wynwood's large stock of

warehouse buildings, all with no windows, would be my

giant canvases to bring to them the greatest street art

ever seen in one place." Starting with the 25th–26th Street

complex of six separate buildings, his goal was to create

a center where people could gravitate to and explore,

and to develop the area's pedestrian potential.

The Wynwood Walls became a major art statement with

Tony's commitment to graffiti and street art, a genre that

he believed was under appreciated and not respected

historically. He wanted to give the movement more

attention and more respect: "By presenting it in a way that

has not been done before, I was able to expose the public

to something they had only seen peripherally." In 2010,

building on the momentum of the year before, Goldman

Properties added 10 more artists to their roster of Walls.

They opened the Wynwood Doors, Tony Goldman’s nod to

traditional portrait galleries and expanded the mural

program outside the Walls."

Guide
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guide

through unknown or unmapped country,

or conducts travellers and tourists through
a place of interest.

Etymology

The word "guide" was incorporated into
(Middle) English via Old French
"guider"
which meant "to guide, lead, conduct"
it was originally taken by
Old French
from Frankish "*witan" meaning "show
the way" (compare modern
Dutch "weten")
from Proto-Germanic "*wit-" meaning "to know"
(compare Old
English "witan" meaning "to see").
The French word influenced by Old
Provencal
"guidar" meaning "guide or leader" is from the
same source.

Tourist guide

A person who guides visitors in the language
of their choice and
interprets the cultural and
natural heritage of an area. The guide will

normally possess an area-specific qualification
usually issued and/or
recognised by the
appropriate authority. Tourist Guides are

representatives of the cities, regions and
countries for which they are
qualified.
It depends largely on them if visitors feel welcome,
want to
stay longer or decide to come back.
They therefore contribute considerably
to the
perception of the destination.
Tourist Guides are able to help
travellers
understand the culture of the region visited and
the way of
life of its inhabitants. They have a
particular role on the one hand to

promote the cultural and natural heritage whilst on
the other hand to help
ensure its sustainability by
making visitors aware of its importance and

vulnerability.

A Selection of Guides for Tourism and Tourists

Exporters' Encyclopaedia

Exporters' encyclopaedia. -- New York, N.Y. : Dun and Bradstreet

International, 77th ed. (1982) - present. -- Annual. Imprint varies.

HF3011.E9

Continues Exporters' Encyclopaedia.

World Marketing Guide. Material is

arranged geographically. For each country

there is a country profile followed by marketing data;

information on communications, transportation,

business travel, key contacts; and a summary of

trade regulations and documentation requirements.

Each edition also includes brief sections on

U.S. ports, U.S. foreign trade zones,

World Trade Center Association

members, U.S. government agencies providing

assistance to exporters, foreign trade organizations,

foreign communications, and on general export

and shipping information and practice. Holdings

begin with 1982 (77th ed.), and continue uninterrupted

to the present. However, there is a change in the pattern

of dates: that edition is followed by 1983/84, then

by 1984/85 and so forth. Although the catalog record

indicates this publication is kept up-to-date by

supplementary updates in loose-leaf

binders, the Library has no such holdings.

“The National Federation of Tourist Guide Associations-

USA was formed in 1998 when members from tour guide

associations and guilds from across the United States

gathered in its first-ever national forum to discuss issues

pertinent to the tourism and travel industry as related to

guiding.

The seed idea of the initial meeting was for guide peers

to share the knowledge and experience garnered from

working in diverse areas across the U.S., so guides may

better understand trends and challenges in local and

national tourism.

The on-going focus and commitment of the NFTGA-USA

is to promote effective training and continuing

education, while upholding a strict code of ethics and

demonstrating the highest degree of professionalism.

It is essential that guides welcome visitors and act in such

a way as to bring credit to the U.S. and their local area

while promoting their country, region and city as

desirable tourist destinations.”

Continues Exporters' Encyclopaedia.
World Marketing Guide. Material is

arranged geographically. For each country
there is a country profile
followed by marketing data;
information on communications, transportation,

business travel, key contacts; and a summary of
trade regulations and
documentation requirements.
Each edition also includes brief sections on

U.S. ports, U.S. foreign trade zones,
World Trade Center Association

members, U.S. government agencies providing
assistance to exporters,
foreign trade organizations,
foreign communications, and on general export

begin with 1982 (77th

to the present. However, there is a
change in the pattern
of dates: that edition is followed by 1983/84, then

by 1984/85 and so forth. Although the catalog record
indicates this
