Biodynamic pioneer Alan Chadwick turned America on to radical growing methodsinfluencing everyone from Alice Waters to winemakers Fetzer and Frey. So how come youve never heard of him?

..

..

The Santa Cruz garden became a magnet for luminaries, drawing the composer John Cage, who made a pilgrimage to meet Chadwick and forage for wild mushrooms in the surrounding forest. Robert Rodale, the organic farm and garden publisher, popped in to see what Chadwick was up to, as did the farmer-poet Wendell Berry. After touring the garden, Joseph Williamson, the then-editor of Californias influential Sunset magazine, was so affected that he overnight became a voice for organic gardening.

..

Today, many consider Chadwick one of the founders of the organic food movement. His garden at UCSC has evolved into the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems, a nucleus for research and education in the field. His acolytes have fanned out across the country, applying his methods and philosophy to a network of organic and sustainable farms. Even chef Alice Waters, founder of Chez Panisse, has cited him as a seminal influence. What Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters were to the psychedelic culture of the 1960s, Chadwick and his band of diggers were to food and gardening.

..

Chadwick left Santa Cruz in early 1972, driven out in what Lee and others have portrayed as an epic struggle for the heart of the university. It was a battle between reductionist material science and spiritual nature. Shortly after a UCSC chemist submitted that the garden has done more to ruin the cause of science on this campus than anything else, Chadwick was gone.

..

Within a few months, hed been named head gardener of Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, just north of San Francisco. He was again accompanied by a coterie of dedicated apprentices; his dramatic tendencies went with him, too. Wendy Johnson, who lived and studied at Green Gulch from 1975 to 2000, described Chadwicks antics in her 2008 book, Gardening at the Dragons Gate: He wailed at top volume each time the wooden sounding block was struck for meditation and faithful Zen students mindfully put down their tools and headed calmly for the meditation hall. Look at thislook at this! Alan ranted and seethed. Perfectly able-bodied young men and women running to the atavistic sound of wood beating on wood. Running without shame, and leaving an old man like me to work alone in the garden!
alan-chadwick-infographic

..

Chadwicks Green Gulch tenure proved even shorter than the one in Santa Cruz, largely because he lacked patience for those Buddhist apprentices. He couldnt fathom why wed just go to meditation when there was work to be done, recalls Deborah Madison, who had moved there to study Zen Buddhism after graduating from UCSC in 1968.

..

He was next invited to manage the Round Valley Garden Project, in Covelo, California. Widely regarded as Chadwicks most fully realized garden, the enchanted property boasted vibrant poppies and his favorite heirloom roses.

..

Everything had to be done by hand. It was how he had cleared the four acres of Santa Cruz hillside, working with nothing more mechanized than a British Bulldog spade and fork. One of his students, John Jeavons, who wrote the influential How to Grow More Vegetables, in 1979, introduced the tools to Paul Hawken, who would later popularize them with his company Smith & Hawken.

..

Chadwicks ardent opposition to all forms of mechanized farming never waned. In 1978, at what would be his final garden, in a spiritual community in New Market, Virginia, he saw a woman trimming a box hedge with electric clippers. He strode over and yelled at her to quitwhich she did, instantly, dropping the clippers and running away, the evil device still writhing on the ground.

..

..

By the time he died, in May 1980, Chadwick stood at the head of a lineage, his students having established some of the best organic farms and gardens in California and throughout the country. Even so, he expressed regret that he wasnt the teacher he would have wished. I have never been taught to be a teacher, and I know Im impossible, he confided to Siska.

..

Thirty-five-years later, Nancy Lingemann thinks of her teacher at least once a day. On a recent morning, she was in her greenhouse transplanting snapdragons when she heard his voice in her head: Prick out the tiddlers, it said, using an English term for a runt. Dont leave out the little ones just because they look weak. Very often theyre the rare color; they just need more time to grow.

Alan Chadwick a Gardener of Souls

http://alan-chadwick.org/

..

..

E.F. Schumacher, author of Small is Beautiful, called Alan Chadwick "the greatest horticulturist of the 20th century." Using the Biodynamic French Intensive Method, which he developed, Alan led the movement that pioneered organic gardening and farming in North America. But Alan Chadwick was far more than an accomplished horticulturist. He taught, prodded, cajoled, and berated his many students until they became competent, authentic, and creative human beings; or at least that was his goal for them, as he would settle for nothing less. As Allen Kalpin, a long-time Chadwick apprentice, once said, "He was a gardener of souls."

..

snip

..

Alan Chadwick would not sell the flowers from his gardens, nor would he collect tuition from the apprentices who wanted to study with him. Everything that he did was a free gift to the world. When he was asked for permission to tape-record his lectures, he typically would agree, on the condition that the tapes were to be shared with whoever wanted one?not sold, but merely for the price of the blank tape needed to make the copy. Paul Lee has called this philosophical approach, Alan Chadwick's "Economy of Gift."

Biographical Highlights

Alan Chadwick was born and raised in England. Chadwick came to the United States in 1967 at the age of 58 to establish the Student Garden Project and training program at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). In 1993 the programs name was changed to The Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at the University of California, Santa Cruz (CASFS). Today, CASFS is a world renowned research center in helping third world farmers use organic gardening to obtain high yields of food in small spaces with a minimal use of chemicals.

The Alan Chadwick Archive

We are the living links in a life force that moves and plays around and through us, binding the deepest soils with the farthest stars.

http://www.alanchadwick.net/Alan_Chadwick_Archive/Welcome.html

..

The Alan Chadwick Biodynamic Archive is currently housed in Asheville, North Carolina. We have 250 of Alans recorded talks, hours of video interviews, forcing house logs, photos and notes. We are right now amidst a concerted effort to complete this archive as fully as possible, in order to share on line his vision and wisdom at a time when we couldnt need it more. We are hoping to get as many of his students and friends involved as possible. Please contact Craig Siska at thealanchadwickarchive@..., or Steve Crimi at logosophiabooks@... for more information.

..

Our goal is to collect, remaster, edit and transcribe all of his talks, because there is nothing to compare to listening to Alan speak on gardening. We hope to have a website where you can listen to a talk, while viewing the transcription, with a complete cross-reference to every specific plant he discusses. And then to have the archive preserved professionally and open to the public.

Description

"This collection includes manuscript and typescript pages of poems, plays and stories by Chadwick. Also included are publicity shots and copies of theater reviews from Chadwick's theater days in South Africa.

Background

The English born Alan Chadwick came into the world on July 27, 1909. Born into the upper class of Edwardian society, Alan was exposed at a young age to a variety of aesthetic pursuits, gardening being chief among them. As a youth the mystic Austrian philosopher Rudolph Steiner heavily influenced him. Steiner's theories, though largely disregarded by the wider academic community, found a stronghold in the mind of young Alan. Later in his life Chadwick would combine what he learned from Steiner with French gardening techniques to develop his own brand of biodynamic horticulture. Chadwick's passion for the arts led him to the Shakespearean theater where he performed professionally for thirty two years. However his life pursuit of beauty was violently interrupted by the Second World War, which he described as having "capsized my attitude to civilization." After the war he moved to South Africa where he continued to act and to garden. In 1967, Chadwick was persuaded by his friend Countess Freye von Moltke to take a position at the burgeoning UC Santa Cruz."

The Alan Chadwick

Legacy Project

http://www.talkingchadwick.org/about.html

The core idea

The core idea of the Alan Chadwick Legacy Project is to document the living legacy of this remarkable man. Chadwicks ideas about nurturing and healing the earth need to be heard and discussed now. Building soils, increasing crop yields organically, and access to fresh, local foods are key to the sustainability the world needs today more than ever. Hundreds of Chadwick apprentices heard this message and many of them are carrying on his vision for the garden, humanity, and the earth in their lives. The success of his apprentices in mentoring still others, along with the sheer power of Chadwicks personality and ideas, has led subsequent generations to embrace him and many of his gardening concepts and practices. To truly document the living legacy, we plan to add the voices of new generations of apprentices to the Talking Chadwick program.
