Google launches new search engine for researchers and journalists

“Institutions that publish their data online will

need to put metadata tags

in their webpages to describe their data including who created it, when it was published, how it was collected, and vice versa. Google’s search engine will

index such information and combine with

information from the Knowledge Graph.”

Trade in Services Database (World Bank Group)

The collection of data on cross-border trade in services is notoriously difficult, in large part due to the intangible nature of services

but also the high capacity needed to record such data. This is particularly true for developing countries. This database tries to fill

this gap by consolidating multiple sources of bilateral trade data in services using mirror techniques, including the OECD, Eurostat,

UN and IMF

Database of Political Institutions (World Bank)

The Database of Political Institutions presents institutional and electoral results data such as measures of checks and balances,

tenure and stability of the government, identification of party affiliation and ideology, and fragmentation of opposition and

government parties in the legislature, among others. The current version of the database, which is now hosted at the IDB,

expands its coverage to about 180 countries for 40 years, 1975-2015.

Welfare, social work and an Indigenous community : an historical perspective.

Meaghan Jane Katrak

Dataset published 2017 via Figshare

This thesis examines social work practice within a rural Aboriginal community in north-west Victoria, Australia. It places the engagement of social work and the Aboriginal community in an historical context from 1970 until 2007. Historically, there has been a legacy of policies and practices enforced upon Aboriginal people in the name of welfare. This thesis examines pre-colonised Aboriginal Australia and provides an overview of the impact of colonisation as an historic context….

In Phase One, 424 women were interviewed from March 2004 to March 2005 on a variety of topics covering victimization and disclosure experiences and risk and protective factors. Information from those interviews is contained in Part 1, Phase One, Interview Data. https://doi.org/10.3886/icpsr04579.v1

Governments of developing countries typically spend between 20 and 30 percent of gross domestic product. Hence, small changes in the efficiency of public spending could have a major impact on aggregate productivity growth and gross domestic product levels. Therefore, measuring efficiency and comparing input-output combinations of different decision-making units becomes a central challenge. This paper gauges efficiency as the distance between observed input-output combinations and an efficiency frontier estimated by means of the Free Disposal Hull and Data Envelopment Analysis techniques. Input-inefficiency (excess input consumption to achieve a level of output) and output-inefficiency (output shortfall for a given level of inputs) are scored in a sample of 175 countries using data from 2006–16 on education, health, and infrastructure. The paper verifies empirical regularities of the cross-country variation in efficiency, showing a negative association between efficiency and spending levels and the ratio of public-to-private financing of the service provision. Other variables, such as inequality, urbanization, and aid dependency, show mixed results. The efficiency of capital spending is correlated with the quality of governance indicators, especially regulatory quality (positively) and perception of corruption (negatively). Although no causality may be inferred from this exercise, it points at different factors to understand why some countries might need more resources than others to achieve similar education, health, and infrastructure outcomes.

Pre-Elementary Education Longitudinal Study

PEELS is a study that is part of the Pre-Elementary Education Longitudinal Study. PEELS (https://ies.ed.gov/ncser/projects/peels/) is a longitudinal survey that is designed to describe the characteristics of children receiving preschool special education, their educational programs and services, and their transitions from preschool programs to elementary schools. The study was conducted using CATI, paper questionnaires, and child assessments. The study followed a nationally representative sample of children with disabilities who were 3 to 5 years old at the start of the study in 2003 through 2009, examining the achievement of students with disabilities in preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school and determining the factors associated with this achievement. Key statistics produced from PEELS are characteristics of children and their families; characteristics of educational services and providers; transitions from early intervention to preschool, and preschool to elementary school; and school-related readiness and behavior.
