Grouping dancers by physical maturity rather than age could better equip late-maturing girls to deal with intense training

.

Grouping young ballet dancers by their developmental rather than chronological age could help lower their risk of injury, a study has suggested. The technique, known as bio-banding, is growing in prominence for other sports, including football and rugby. Researchers from Bath and Bristol universities said the current practices for grouping and evaluating young dancers could be counterproductive.

.

The work, which focused on girls, suggests that the late-maturing are potentially placed at a significant disadvantage during important phases of their development and at a greater risk of injury. Ballet teachers have a pivotal role at this time, and further education regarding the implications of puberty upon dance training may be helpful, the researchers said.

.

Dancers in vocational training are grouped by age and can begin full-time training for up to six days a week from as young as 11. Girls of the same chronological age vary greatly biologically, with some maturing in advance or delay of others.

.

Ballet has traditionally favoured late-maturing girls, who tend to be slimmer, with less body fat and comparatively longer legs in relation to their torso. But the study, published in the Journal of Adolescence, found that late maturation poses challenges for dancers, with auditioning and an increase in training often coinciding with key developmental stages. This can put young dancers at an increased risk of injury at crucial points in their development, according to the research.

.

Lead researcher and former ballet dancer, Siobhan Mitchell, a PhD student at Bath Universitys department for health, said: Traditionally many people have assumed there is a bias in ballet towards late maturers, but the reality is less clear. Of the teachers we spoke to, many saw late maturation as a disadvantage, as later-maturing girls experience their growth spurt at a point where training schedules become more intense and when auditions take place, which can often make performance difficult.

Police Commissioner Kevin Davis blamed the childs mother for allowing him to leave the house with a realistic-looking toy gun.

.

A 13-year-old boy was shot Wednesday afternoon by two Baltimore police officers who believed that the toy gun the child was carrying was real, according to WJZ. The boy's injuries are reportedly not life-threatening. The incident happened in Southeast Baltimore around 4 p.m. EDT near a local community center.

.

According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis, the child ran after police officers identified themselves, forcing them to open fire.

.

In a press conference, Davis called the toy a "dead-on ringer" for a Beretta 92FS, which the gun's website describes as "the world's most trusted military and police pistol," and placed the blame for the shooting squarely on the child's mother. "If it's a BB gun, projectiles can be fired from a BB gun," Davis said. "We see people who arm themselves with replica handguns for the purpose of committing crimes with that replica handgun. It happens all the time in Baltimore; it happens elsewhere as well.

.

"I can't speak as to what was going through that young man's mind," he continued. "I've got two 13-year-old twins at home, and I'm trying to imagine my two 13-year-olds at home leaving my house with a replica semi-automatic pistol in their hand.

.

"The mom knew that her son left their house with a replica semi-automatic pistol in his hand," Davis added. "I can't wrap my head around that right now."

CHICAGO When he sentenced Dennis Hastert to more than a year in prison, the judge in the former House speakers hush-money case delivered the verbal equivalent of a public flogging.

.

Before imposing the 15-month sentence, a far stiffer sentence than federal guidelines suggested, U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin spent nearly an hour Wednesday rebuking the 74-year-old Republican for sexually abusing high school athletes decades ago, when he was a wrestling coach.

.

Hastert, the nations longest-serving GOP speaker who for eight years was second in the line of succession to the presidency, sat almost frozen in a wheelchair, his head slightly bowed as he peered over his eyeglasses.

.

The judge drew special attention to the lies Hastert told federal investigators last year in a desperate bid to keep his dark secret hidden. And he portrayed Hasterts fall from grace as traumatic, not only for his victims and their families, but for the country.

.

Nothing is more stunning than to have the words serial child molester and speaker of the House in the same sentence.

.

As he adjourned the two-hour hearing, Durkin added: I hope I never see a case like this again.

.

Had it not been for the statute of limitations on sex crimes running out long ago, the judge said, Hastert could well have been convicted of sexually abusing children. In that circumstance, he would probably have gone to prison for decades.

.

The judge did not say where Hastert would serve time when he reports later this year, but he cited one possibility a prison in the Rochester, Minnesota, area, that already has many child molesters. In such a place, the judge said, Hastert would be less likely to be singled out by other inmates.

.

Defense attorney Thomas Green sought probation, saying Hastert had already paid an enormous toll in public shame. Defense attorneys had previously noted how Hasterts portrait had been taken down from a Capitol Hill hallway shortly after his May 2015 indictment.

.

Losing your good name is a punishment, Durkin said. And Hasterts name has been obliterated. But taking down a portrait from a place of honor is not comparable to the devastation endured by someone who is sexually abused as a child.

Donald Trump put his roughest edges on display Thursday night in Costa Mesa as he opened his California primary campaign with a raw performance highlighting his hard-line views on illegal immigration and torture while trashing an array of rivals.

.

The front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination surrounded himself onstage with people carrying banners with photos of family members killed by immigrants in the country illegally.

.

More than 8,000 supporters erupted in a thunder of cheers as Trump vowed to make Mexico pay for a wall along its border with the United States to keep such criminals from harming Americans.

.

Were going to stop drugs from coming in, Trump told them. The drugs are poisoning our youth and a lot of other people.

.

snip

.

After weeks of toying with efforts to tone down his rhetoric, Trumps kickoff rally for Californias June 7 primary was more in line with the initial declaration of his candidacy last June, when he accused Mexico of sending rapists and drug dealers into the United States.

.

As the crowds rapturous reaction attested, its still an approach with strong appeal to a large segment of Republican voters in California. But its also the kind of politics that has badly damaged the partys standing in a state where the Latino and Asian population has risen steadily for decades.

.

Trump also played to fears of terrorism, blasting President Obama for allowing Middle Eastern war refugees into the United States.

.

Were putting them all over the country by the thousands, and we have no idea what the hell is going to happen, he said.

.

Trump repeated a story discredited by historians about U.S. Army Gen. John Joseph Pershing dipping 50 bullets in pig blood and using them to execute 49 Muslim terrorists around the time of the Philippine-American War of 1899-1902. The crowd applauded. Trump said Pershing gave the 50th suspect the remaining bullet to show to his people, and it deterred terrorism for 42 years up from 25 years in an earlier telling.

.

Trump went on to criticize Republican rival Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas for not embracing the waterboarding of terrorism suspects.

.

Hes actually a very weak person, so he didnt like it, Trump said. Id go many steps further than waterboarding many, many steps further.

.

His torture comments generated another huge burst of cheers.

.

Trump was in maximum showmanship mode, with hand gestures up, down, sideways and in circles to complement his one-liners, along with a vast range of facial expressions for comic effect.

.

Reacting to onetime rival and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush renewing his criticism of Trump on Thursday, the New York real estate mogul said: Hes a low-energy person. We dont need low-energy people. Just remember that. We need high-energy. We need strength. You know Hillary, Hillary Crooked Hillary, right?

Never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch, says Boehner, but presidential hopeful Cruz counters: I dont even know the man

.

John Boehner, the former House speaker, has called presidential candidate Ted Cruz Lucifer in the flesh in remarks that expose the depth of discontent within the Republican party.

.

Speaking at a town hall-style event for students at Stanford University in California on Wednesday, Boehner called front-runner Donald Trump his texting buddy, but offered a more graphic response when asked about the Texas senator.

.

Lucifer in the flesh, the former speaker said. I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.

.

His comments were first reported by Stanfords student newspaper.

.

Cruz, campaigning in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Thursday ahead of the states 3 May primary, responded by saying Boehner was letting his inner Trump come out.

.

John Boehner in his remarks described Donald Trump as his texting and golfing buddy, Cruz said. So if you want someone thats a texting and golfing buddy, if youre happy with John Boehner as speaker of the House and you want a president like John Boehner, Donald Trump is your man.

.

Both Cruz and Carly Fiorina, who was campaigning with him after he named her as his running mate, also referred to Boehners comments during the rally.

.

In 2013, Cruz joined forces with tea party conservatives in the House in triggering a partial, 16-day government shutdown over demands to undo Barack Obamas healthcare law. There was no chance Obama would agree to such a step, and Republican leaders like Boehner saw the move as a fruitless effort that only hurt the GOP politically.

.

Two years later, it was the same House conservatives who challenged Boehners leadership, and the speaker decided to step down rather than allow a very public fight.

Knowledge of Climate Change Basics Doesn't Make People Care

Knowledge of climate change consequences
correlates with concern in some countries.

Improving the public's understanding of anthropogenic climate change is vital to cultivating the political will to do something about it. However, a lot of research has shown that simply improving peoples understanding wont necessarily do much to change their stance. This is because peoples opinions on many topics rest largely on their political affiliation, rather than how well they understand the science.

.

That leaves us with a thorny state of affairs. If improving science education isnt going to shift public opinion, what can? A recent paper in Nature Climate Change suggests that education might not be as hopeless a cause as previously thoughtbut the work has some important limitations that may not give us much cause for optimism.

.

A problem with previous research on the topic is that knowledge about climate change was treated as a monolith, the authors of the new paper argue. Past studies didn't take into account that there are different kinds of knowledge about climate change. While knowledge in one area might be influenced by ideology, knowledge in other areas might not be.

.

So, for this study, the researchers divided their survey questions into three different categories of knowledge: physical knowledge, causes knowledge, and consequences knowledge. Recognizing that burning oil produces CO2 fell into "physical knowledge." Understanding of the human influence on climate change went under causes knowledge, while knowledge about the predicted outcomes of climate change was consequences knowledge.

.

Researchers surveyed 2,495 people across six countries: the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, and China. In addition to asking knowledge-focused questions, they also asked participants how concerned they were about climate change. Other questions involved how much the participants valued looking after themselves, looking after others, and looking after nature and the environment.

.

Unsurprisingly, concern about nature and the environment was strongly related to concern about climate change. What was surprising was that, in all the countries, a higher degree of knowledge about the causes of climate change was related to higher concern. Greater consequences knowledge was linked to more concern everywhere except Canada and China.

.

Greater physical knowledgebasic climate literacywas actually linked to lower concern. This finding gels with previous research suggesting that scientifically better-informed people might be better at finding ways to disregard research they don't like.

Democrats and climate hawks share a dilemma, and that dilemma is millennials.

.

Millennials people born between 1980 and 2000, give or take, depending on your definition are, in many ways, an incredibly attractive political target. There's a lot of them, they lean Democrat, they are more concerned about climate change than older cohorts, and they absolutely love clean energy.

.

The problem is, too few of them vote. "Between 1964 and 2012," writes Derek Thompson at the Atlantic, "youth voter turnout in presidential elections has fallen below 50 percent, and Baby Boomers now outvote their children's generation by a stunning 30 percentage points." It's even worse in midterm elections.

.

Now, eco-billionaire Tom Steyer is going to put some of his money toward changing that. His Super PAC, NextGen Climate, is launching a $25 million "national campaign to register and mobilize young voters in seven key battleground states to help elect climate champions to the White House and the Senate this fall."

.

NextGen has released a strategy memo that outlines the rationale for their campaign. It contains all sorts of enlightening #MillennialFacts, which I will share with you now.

.

Millennials are numerous

.

In 2008, there were twice as many boomers eligible to vote as millennials. And there were three times more actual boomer votes cast.

.

That's changing. Millennial voter registration has almost tripled since then.

.

In 2016, for the first time, millennials will be as large a share of the eligible voting population as boomers, roughly 30 percent. That said, boomers are still expected to outvote millennials this year.

.

But by 2020, millennials will outnumber boomers 34 to 28 percent, and cast more actual ballots. (These numbers are from the States of Change project; more here from Ron Brownstein.)

.

In this year's election, NextGen is zeroing in on millennials in presidential swing states, where they're a particularly significant voting block

USDA Unveils New 'Urban Agriculture Toolkit' for Urban Farmers and Agri-business Entrepreneurs
Online Resource Draws on USDA's and Partners' Experience with Launching and Sustaining Urban Agriculture Operations Points Producers to Helpful Financial and Technical Resources
WASHINGTON, April 29, 2016 Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today unveiled the USDA Urban Agriculture Toolkit, a new resource created by USDA's Know Your Farmer team to help entrepreneurs and community leaders successfully create jobs and increase access to healthy food through urban agriculture. From neighborhood gardens grown on repurposed lots, to innovative mobile markets and intensive hydroponic and aquaculture operations, urban food production is rapidly growing into a mature business sector in cities across the country.

.

"Urban agriculture helps strengthen the health and social fabric of communities while creating economic opportunities for farmers and neighborhoods," Vilsack said. "USDA's Urban Agriculture Toolkit compiles guidance from our Know Your Farmer team and many private partners into one comprehensive resource to help small-scale producers manage all aspects of their business. From protecting soil health to marketing to schools and grocery store chains, USDA has tools to meet the needs of this new breed of innovative urban farmer and small business owner."

.

Industry estimates show U.S. local food sales totaled at least $12 billion in 2014, up from $5 billion in 2008, and experts anticipate that value to hit $20 billion by 2019. The numbers also show that these opportunities are helping to drive job growth in agriculture, increase entrepreneurship and expand food access and choice.

.

USDA's Toolkit is an electronic document that helps urban and small farms navigate more than 70 helpful resources, including technical assistance and financing opportunities. It focuses on some of the most pressing challenges confronting urban producers such as land access, soil quality, water resources, capital and financing, infrastructure, market development, production strategies, and applying for federal, state or private foundation grants. University extension service partners in Chicago and Indianapolis helped develop cost estimates for starting urban farms and the toolkit includes information on best practices and check lists for start-ups and early-stage producers planning outdoor or indoor operations.

.

Some of the USDA resources featured in the Toolkit include:

.

Natural Resources Conservation Service technical and financial assistance for drip irrigation and seasonal high tunnels to extend the growing season.

.

Farm Services Agency microloans that provide up to $50,000 in financing for equipment, working capital or other expenses.
Food and Nutrition Service assistance to help urban farmers become authorized to accept SNAP, WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefit cards.
Agricultural Marketing Service Farmers Market Promotion Program grants that support direct-to-consumer marketing activities in cities, and Local Food Promotion Program grants that support food hubs, farm-to-retail, and related projects.

.

National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program support for field trials in urban settings and urban farm planning and marketing guides.
Vilsack made the announcement today during an event opening a new school community garden at Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore. The idea for the Toolkit was originally conceived at a USDA Urban Agriculture roundtable held nearby in Baltimore last spring. A key result of that meeting was the creation of USDA's Urban Agriculture Working Group (UAWG) that has assembled an inventory of existing department resources and worked to make them more readily accessible. The UAWG continues to actively engage urban producers around the country to identify evolving needs and support their success as a positive socioeconomic force in their communities.

.

Several Baltimore organizations in the vanguard of urban agriculture have developed resources that are included in the Toolkit as models for other communities like the City Farm Alliance's Urban Agriculture How-To Guide, the Community Law Center's Urban Agriculture Law Project Manual and the Green Pattern Book that helps local leaders map and identify productive new uses for vacant land.

.

During the event, Vilsack also highlighted expansion of a partnership between USDA and the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps, increasing the number of opportunities for young people in Baltimore to serve as AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates, earning valuable professional and life experience while serving their community. These AmeriCorps members will serve with the Maryland Out of School Time (MOST) Network to provide summer opportunities for Baltimore City residents. They will join the more than 1,400 AmeriCorps members currently serving institutions and organizations throughout the city, including Frederick Douglass High School.

.

The Urban Agriculture Toolkit and the UAWG are part of USDA's Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Initiative (KYF2) supporting the Obama Administration's work to strengthen economic bonds between rural and urban areas. Launched in 2009, KYF2 breaks down silos and takes stock of USDA programs that support the growing demand for local and regional food systems. Visit the KYF2 website at www.usda.gov/knowyourfarmer to find local and regional food system resources in your community. A new study examining wildfires in California found that human activity explains as much about their frequency and location as climate influences. The researchers systematically looked at human (anthropogenic) behaviors and climate change together, which is unique and rarely attempted on an area of land this large.

.

The findings suggest many models of wildfire predictions do not accurately account for anthropogenic factors and may therefore be misleading when identifying the main causes/drivers of wildfires. The newest model proportionately accounts for climate change and human behavioral threats and allows experts to more accurately predict how much land is at risk of burning in California through 2050, which is estimated at more than 7 million acres in the next 25 years.

.

Climate change affects the severity of the fire season and the amount and type of vegetation on the land, which are major variables in predicting wildfires. However, humans contribute another set of factors that influence wildfires, including where structures are built, and the frequency and location of ignitions from a variety of sources everything from cigarettes on the highway, to electrical poles that get blown down in Santa Ana winds. As a result of the near-saturation of the landscape, humans are currently responsible for igniting more than 90 percent of the wildfires in California.

.

"Individuals don't have much control over how climate change will effect wildfires in the future. However, we do have the ability to influence the other half of the equation, those variables that control our impact on the landscape," said Michael Mann, assistant professor of geography at George Washington University and lead author of the study. "We can reduce our risks by disincentivizing housing development in fire-prone areas, better managing public land, and rethinking the effectiveness of our current firefighting approach."

.

The researchers found that by omitting the human influence on California wildfires, they were overstating the influence of climate change. The authors recommend considering climate change and human variables at the same time for future models.

.

Information is critical to determine wildfire risks

.

"There is widespread agreement about the importance of climate on wildfire at relatively broad scales. At more local scales, however, you can get the story quite wrong if you don't include human development patterns," said co-author Max Moritz, UC Cooperative Extension fire ecology specialist whose lab is at the University of California, Berkeley. "This is an important finding about how we model climate change effects, and it also confirms that getting a handle on where and how we build our communities is essential to limiting future losses."

Rain, rain go away

.

Wait, what am I saying? Plants need sun, sure, but at this time of year they need water more. So do our farms and forests.

.

Having said that, dang, Im excited to get going on all those chores that really ought to be done now, before the trees fully leaf out. My houseplants are craning the necks toward the window. They want out as much as I do. Probably more.

.

I open windows on warm-enough days to get them used to the breezes theyll have to deal with in the real world. Then we wait.

.

Speaking of leaf-out, Ive become fascinated with phenology. Thats the study of how trees and shrubs respond to signs that spring is here.

.

Day length plays a big role, but an even more important signal to plants is temperature. Thats why a warm winter can really mess things up weve all lost leaves or flowers or even whole plants to a late freeze that kills tender new growth.

.

Scientists are looking to leaf-out timing for additional proof that global warming is real and changing ecosystems. Plants that used to be perfectly comfortable here in Zone 4 are starting to move north.

.

Obviously they cant do that as fast as a wild animal can. But when they move, the animals either have to follow them or change their appetites. More and more animals are moving to cities, just like humans are.

.

I wish wed stop acting like thats inevitable. I wish wed incentivize people to go the opposite direction. Our heartland desperately needs more small-scale organic farmers. Im hoping that soon everyone will be saying about farming: thats where the good-paying jobs are!

Kentucky's two U.S. Senators, Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, show no signs of evolving on their contrarian views of climate change. But across America, new polling shows their fellow Republicans' opinions may be thawing along with the polar ice cap.

.

While just 47 percent of conservative Republicans think global warming is happening, that's up 19 percentage points over the past two years, according to a new survey by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.

.

Still, the Yale program found that Democrats are more likely than Republicans to be convinced that people are causing the warming and are willing to support climate action with potential implications in this election year.

.

Some 75 percent of Democrats believe climate change is mostly caused by people, compared to 49 percent of liberal and moderate Republicans and just 26 percent of conservative Republicans, the survey found.

.

The liberal blog Climate Progress reports that the shift is enough to put pressure on some more moderate Republican senators with constituents that appear to be increasingly receptive to mainstream climate science, which warns of global dangers in the decades and centuries ahead. Specifically, it calls out Sens. Mark Kirk, R-Illinois, Kelly Ayotte, R-New Hampshire, and Rob Portman, R-Ohio, as vulnerable to Democratic challenges on the environment.

.

The blog went to Michelle Pautz, an associate professor of political science at the University of Dayton, for an explanation: "By acknowledging climate change, a (Republican) candidate could appeal to voters who think it is ridiculous that a candidate does not agree with the overwhelming consensus of peer-reviewed scientific research that documents climate change is happening.

.

snip

.

In March, Gallup found that Americans were taking global warming more seriously than at any time in the last eight years: Some 64 percent of adults in the country told the pollster they were worried "a great deal" or a "fair amount" about global warming. That was up from 51 percent in 2011. Gallup found that 40 percent of Republicans surveyed worry a great deal or fair amount about climate change, compared to 31 just last year.

.

Democrats' concerns jumped six percentage points, to 84 percent, over the previous year, illustrating the continued divide between political parties, Gallup found.

Why You Shouldn't Exercise to Lose Weight, Explained with 60+ Studies

"I'm going to make you work hard," a blonde and perfectly muscled fitness instructor screamed at me in a recent spinning class, "so you can have that second drink at happy hour!"

.

At the end of the 45-minute workout, my body was dripping with sweat. I felt like I had worked really, really hard. And according to my bike, I had burned more than 700 calories. Surely I had earned an extra margarita.

.

The spinning instructor was echoing a message we've been getting for years: As long as you get on that bike or treadmill, you can keep indulging and still lose weight. It's been reinforced by fitness gurus, celebrities, food and beverage companies like PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, and even public-health officials, doctors, and the first lady of the United States. Countless gym memberships, fitness tracking devices, sports drinks, and workout videos have been sold on this promise.

.

There's just one problem: This message is not only wrong, it's leading us astray in our fight against obesity.

.

To find out why, I read through more than 60 studies on exercise and weight loss. I also spoke to nine leading exercise, nutrition, and obesity researchers. Here's what I learned.

.

Topics Covered in This Article

.

1) An evolutionary clue to how our bodies burn calories

2) Exercise is excellent for health

3) Exercise alone is almost useless for weight loss

4) Exercise accounts for a small portion of daily calorie burn

5) It's hard to create a significant calorie deficit through exercise

6) Exercise can undermine weight loss in other, subtle ways

7) Exercise may cause physiological changes that help us conserve energy

8) Energy expenditure might have an upper limit

9) The government and the food industry are doling out unscientific advice

10) So what actually works for weight loss?

.

.

If you embark on a weight-loss journey that involves both adding exercise and cutting calories, Montclair's Diana Thomas warned not to count those calories burned in physical activity toward extra eating.

.

"Pretend you didn't exercise at all," she said. "You will most likely compensate anyway so think of exercising just for health improvement but not for weight loss."

Next week voters go the polls for the Scottish elections and for the first time they are being urged to factor Scotlands obesity crisis into the choices they make.

.

Obesity Action Scotland is challenging parliamentary candidates to sign up to five key measures as part of a campaign called Scotland Cant Stomach It Any Longer. The aim is to ensure the next Scottish Parliament is firmly committed to reducing the damage being done by growing obesity levels.

.

Figures show 65 per cent of Scottish adults are overweight, including 28 per cent who are obese. In other words, two in every three people who can vote next week are heavier than they should be.

.

Although the rise in numbers has slowed, the problem here is significantly worse than elsewhere, and Scotland is only second to Hungary on adult obesity levels.

.

While poor diet and lack of exercise are key factors, Obesity Action Scotland says the problem is too complex to expect it to be solved by individual behavioural changes. Thats where the politicians come in.

.

Established last summer to provide clinical leadership on our weight problem, Obesity Action Scotland believes a few actions could make a big difference. As well as supporting cuts in fat and sugar and actions to encourage healthy weight levels, they want politicians to look at what difference price and regulation could make to the Scottish diet as well as reinvesting revenue from the sugar tax into measures to discourage childhood obesity. They also believe the public sector should lead by example.

Press Release

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2016-04/30/c_135325701.htm

.

.

JINAN, April 30 (Xinhua) -- A new study has highlighted rising obesity rates among children in rural China.

.

The study, published in the latest issue of the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, found children and adolescents in the countryside of Shandong Province to be much fatter in 2014 than they were in 1985.

.

It was based on a survey tracking nearly 28,000 students from rural schools in Shandong, a predominantly agricultural area, over the 29 years.

.

The students were aged from seven to 18 when they were surveyed.

.

Some 17.2 percent of the boys surveyed in 2014 were obese, while the rate was only 0.03 percent in 1985, according to the thesis.

.

The obesity rate among girls was 9.11 percent in 2014, while in 1985, the percentage was 0.12 percent.

.

Meanwhile, the proportions of overweight boys and girls climbed to 16.35 percent and 13.91 percent respectively in 2014. In 1985, the proportions were 0.74 percent and 1.45 percent, said Zhang Yingxiu, one of the co-authors of the thesis.

.

He said the increase was even more apparent among children aged from seven to 12.

.

The study used a cut-off of Body Mass Index (BMI) -- the ratio of weight-to-height squared -- to define overweight and obesity. A BMI of between 24 and 27.9 was defined as overweight and a BMI at or above 28 was considered obese.

.

The authors attributed the growing obesity rate to the country's social and economic development, as well as lifestyle changes that had led to excessive energy intake and lack of physical exercise among youngsters.

.

"Compared with their parents' generation, today's rural children are better fed but spend far less time on physical exercises," said Zhao Jinshan, co-author of the thesis and a nutritionist with the Shandong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

.

The phenomenon is typical among "left-behind children," those who are left in the care of relatives by parents who are busy working in faraway cities.

.

Cai Shibi, who looks after 20 left-behind children in her village in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, said at least five of the kids were obese, though their families were not necessarily rich.

.

One school boy in her care is 110 cm tall but weighs 55 kg. "His parents work far from home and his grandparents spoil him by stuffing him with tasty food," said Cai.

.

Unlike their parents who ran around having fun and staying fit, many rural children today are couch potatoes, said Zhao.

.

On the other hand, compared with urbanites, who tend to pay more attention to their dietary balance, most rural residents still prefer meat to vegetables and eat too much salty, oily food, said Zhao. "Dietary habits are a complicated social issue, and rural society needs to enter a certain stage of development for its people to realize the importance of a balanced diet."

.

Doctors warn that child obesity can lead to hypertension, diabetes and even cardiovascular diseases.

Why Republicans are Very, Very Likely to Lose the Presidency in 2016

Updated by Lee Drutman

April 5, 2016, 2:30 p.m. ET

Vox

http://www.vox.com/polyarchy/2016/4/5/11370102/republicans-lose-2016

.

.

Every now and then in American politics, political parties enter their presidential nominating conventions deeply, deeply divided. And when they are deeply divided, they lose.

.

Conventions, rather than being coronations, turn into battles between rival factions, each with a legitimate hope that it will somehow come away from the convention with its candidate as the nominee. But in the end, the party can only choose one nominee, and thus only one faction can win. That means the other faction goes home dejected and angry. Some of them will vote for another candidate. Some won't vote at all.

.

This is the Republicans' problem in 2016. At this point in the game, it's increasingly clear the Republican's July convention will be a barnburner of fights to rival the most bitter of conventions, with wounds that will probably take years, not months or weeks, to heal. And whomever the delegates ultimately choose, there is no consensus candidate left. The divisions have grown too deep.

.

What history tells us: Divided conventions produce general election losers

.

Depending on how you count it, since 1900 one party has been much more deeply divided than the other party between seven and 10 times. In a few of those years, both parties were at least somewhat divided. But in all 10 elections, the party that was more deeply split lost the general election.

.

Each election is obviously different. But looking across the elections, two general patterns emerge.

.

First, an internal fight is almost always a sign of deeper party weakness. Fights emerge either because the party is deeply split between two or more internal factions or because the leading nominee (sometimes the incumbent) is already weakened, and others see an opportunity. Either way, it's bad news for that party in the general election.

.

Second, conventions don't heal divisions. In the bitter fight over the nomination, nobody comes out looking particularly good. If one faction wins, the other loses. And that means voters who are so angry and disappointed that they're either going to stay home or vote for a third party (divided major parties often invite third-party opportunists). They might even vote for the opposing party.

.

Maybe history will be different this time. But it seems unlikely.

Against all odds, the 21 children, ages 8 to 19, who are suing the government to protect the environment against the harm of global warming in their future, have won in court.

.

Again.

.

In a surprise ruling on Friday from the bench in the ongoing climate case brought by these youths against the State of Washingtons Department of Ecology, King County Superior Court Judge Hollis Hill ordered the Department of Ecology to promulgate a carbon emissions reduction rule by the end of 2016 and make recommendations to the state legislature on science-based greenhouse gas reductions in the 2017 legislative session. Judge Hill also ordered the Department of Ecology to consult with the young plaintiffs in advance of that recommendation.

.

The youths were forced back to court after the Department of Ecology unexpectedly withdrew the very rulemaking efforts to reduce carbon emissions that the agency told the judge it had underway in its previous court appearance, an interesting sleight-of-hand from a state agency.

.

The lawsuit brought by the youths alleges that the Federal Government is violating the Plaintiffs constitutional and public trust rights by promoting the use of fossil FOSL -0.09% fuels. The Complaint explains that, for over fifty years, the United States Government and the Fossil Fuel Industry have known that carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels causes global warming and dangerous climate change, and that continuing to burn fossil fuels destabilizes the climate system.

.

This case is one of several similar cases in federal district court in Oregon, and in the state courts of North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Massachusetts, all supported by Our Childrens Trust, seeking the legal right to a healthy atmosphere and stable climate.

.

Championed by Professor Mary Christina Wood in the Law School at the University of Oregon under the idea of Atmospheric Trust Litigation, this and several similar lawsuits claim that a government elected by the people and for the people has a duty to protect the natural systems required for the peoples survival.

.

According to Wood, if both the executive and legislative branches fail in that duty, then the judicial branch must intervene.

.

Most importantly, the courts so far have unequivocally rejected all arguments raised by the Federal Government and the Fossil Fuel Industry in their Motions to Dismiss that seek to deny the youth their fundamental rights under the constitution and public trust doctrine, and claimed that the government has no duty to protect essential natural resources, such as air and oceans.

Bernies slogan has helped his campaign catch fire among young people. Feel the Bern. Feel the Bern. Thats a good slogan. Hillarys slogan has not had the same effect. Lets see this. [image of a boulder on a hill with the slogan Trudge up the Hill]

.

Look, Ive said how much I admire Hillarys toughness, her smarts, her policy chops, her experience. Youve got admit it though, Hillary trying appeal to young voters is a little bit like your relative who just signed up for Facebook. Dear America, did you get my poke? Is it appearing on your wall? Im not sure Im using this right. Love, Aunt Hillary. Its not entirely persuasive.

.

Meanwhile, on the Republican side, things are a little more, how shall we say this, a little more loose. Just look at the confusion over the invitations to tonights dinner. Guests were asked to check whether they wanted steak or fish. But instead, a whole bunch of you wrote in Paul Ryan. Thats not an option people. Steak or fish. You may not like steak or fish, but thats your choice.

.

Meanwhile, some candidates arent polling high enough to qualify for their own joke tonight. [image of Kasich eating]. The rules were well established ahead of time.

.

And then theres Ted Cruz. Ted had a tough week. He went to Indiana. Hoosier country. Stood on a basketball court and called the hoop a basketball ring. What else is in his lexicon. Baseball sticks. Football hats. But sure, Im the foreign one.

.

Well let me conclude tonight on a more serious note. I want thank the Washington press corps. I want to thank Carol for all that you do. The free press is central to our democracy and, nah, Im just kidding! You know Im going to talk about Trump. Come on. We werent just going to stop there. Come on.

.

Although I am a little hurt that hes not here tonight. We had so much fun that last time, And it is surprising. Youve got a room full of reporters, celebrities, cameras. And he says no. Is this dinner too tacky for the Donald? What could he possibly be doing instead? Is he at home eating a Trump steak, tweeting out insults to Angela Merkel? Whats he doin?

.

The republican establishment is incredulous that he is their most likely nominee. Incredulous. Shocking. They say Donald lacks the foreign policy experience to be president. But in fairness, he has spent years meeting with leaders from around the world: Miss Sweden, Miss Argentina, Miss Azerbaijan.

.

And there is one area where Donalds experience could be invaluable and thats closing Guantanamo because Trump knows a thing or two about running waterfront properties into the ground. Alright, that is probably enough. I mean Ive got more material. No, no, no.

.

I dont want to spend too much time on The Donald. Following your lead, I want to show some restraint. Because I think we can all agree that from the start hes gotten the appropriate amount of coverage befitting the seriousness of his candidacy. Ha. I hope you all are proud of yourselves. The guy wanted to give his hotel business a boost and now we are praying that Cleveland makes it through July.

A woman who was lost with her mother in Tararua Forest Park for four days says she was hours away from dying and passed on her dying wishes moments before they were rescued.

.

Americans Carolyn Lloyd, 45, and her daughter Rachel, 22, were found at midday yesterday after entering the Kapakapanui track east of Waikanae on Tuesday.

.

After getting lost, Rachel Lloyd, a Massey University student, said they had to ration a few peanuts and crackers and huddle together at night for body heat.

.

At one point she fell in a stream and was completely submerged.

.

After that, she said she "lost all my senses" and began developing hypothermia, temporary blindness and hearing loss. She lost all feeling in her legs.

.

"We knew I was going to go first. I was telling her certain things to tell people - my dying wishes pretty much - my mum was basically watching me die which was really, really hard," she said.

.

Carolyn Lloyd carried her daughter for a distance before being physically unable to continue. They made final camp by a stream.

.

Mrs Lloyd crafted the word "help" with rocks and sticks in a clearing - which led the helicopter searching for the two women to locate them.

.

"My mum is such an incredible woman, the strongest woman I've ever met," said Rachel.

.

"If I could be a 10th of the woman she is today I would be incredibly lucky."

.

Police said the pair had done all the right things when they realised they were lost.

Two US women found after being lost in Tararua Forest Park for four nights did everything they should have to survive.

.

Carolyn Lloyd, and her daughter Rachel, 22, were found at midday today, exhausted and hungry but otherwise unharmed. The pair had headed out for a day walk on the Kapakapanui track on Tuesday.

.

Sergeant Anthony Harmer said the women were experienced day walkers but they ended up in steep terrain and could not get back on the track.

.

"It is not clear exactly what has happened to them, but it appears that they have become disorientated and unable to find their way out."

.

A search was launched after the pair's rental car, which was supposed to have been returned yesterday morning, was found at the entrance to the Kapakapanui track near Waikanae.

.

The police said they were also alerted that the women were missing by student services at Massey University where Rachel is a student, and by the motel the pair were supposed to have checked out of three days ago.

.

A search began and a helicopter spotted them near a stream off the main track about midday today.

.

Mr Harmer said they had done all the right things when they realised they were lost.
