... INDOOR GARDENING : GARDENING : BOTANICAL GARDENS : UNITED STATES: CITIES: BUFFALO, NEW YORK: $3 Million Renovation to Botanical Gardens is Underway ... ... $3 Million Renovation to Botanical Gardens is Underway 1,200-pound cycad moved after 70 years By Jane Kwiatkowski Radlich on July 23, 2015 - 9:13 PM updated July 23, 2015 at 10:42 PM The Buffalo News http://www.buffalonews.com/city-region/south-buffalo/ 3-million-renovation-to-botanical-gardens-is-underway-20150723 ... A shorter URL for the above link: ... http://tinyurl.com/o23bda2 ... ... As the initial phases of the $3 million renovation at the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens began to take shape shortly after Memorial Day, it was clear the prickly cycad had to be moved. The 500-year-old, palmlike plant had lived happily for 70 years under the domes of the Victorian conservatory on South Park Avenue. ... It had to be moved, said Todd Zintz, director of operations at the gardens. And we did the best we could with what we had to work with. It was archaic as it was ingenious. It took three people three days to gradually dig it out, and then it took another three people to move it onto a cart and into the big dome. ... The 1,200-pound cycad which grows one inch a year and was donated in 1901 by John J. Albright was important to us, said David Swarts, president and CEO of the gardens. ... Swarts was joined by a small group of county officials and garden enthusiasts who were gathered on the North Domes front lawn late Thursday morning to deliver the update on the garden project. ... The county is providing the $3 million for the complete restoration of this building, said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. The glass, as you see, was removed, as was the putty that held the glass in place. The problem was asbestos in the putty. ... Work on the North Dome will include steel refurbishment and replacement, foundation and masonry repair, wood restoration and replacement, lighting upgrades, heating system repairs as well as the installation of a garden misting system. ... We are celebrating the 115th birthday of the Botanical Gardens this year, said Swarts, who added that the attraction has been visited by many people over the century. ... In 2014, the gardens welcomed more than 100,000 people to the tri-domed conservatory designed by Frederick A. Lord and Lords son-in-law William Addison Burnham of the firm Lord & Burnham. ... ... .. INDOOR GARDENING : GARDENING : URBAN AGRICULTURE : UNITED STATES: CITIES: SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO: Can Urban Agriculture Work in Santa Fe? .. .. Can Urban Agriculture Work in Santa Fe? By Jackie Jadrnak Journal North Reporter PUBLISHED: Friday, July 24, 2015 at 12:05 am ABQ Journal http://www.abqjournal.com/617477/news/ can-urban-agriculture-work-in-santa-fe.html .. A shorter URL for the above link: .. http://tinyurl.com/pzr8p3n .. .. Every neighborhood should have an urban farm. .. snip .. The documentary Bringing Food Home is the work of filmmakers David Aubrey and Nanda Currant. .. They started work on it after Gaia Gardens, an urban farm operating along Arroyo Chamiso, attracted a host of city zoning, fire, electrical and more inspectors after a neighbor complained about the operation. Founders Poki Piottin and Dominique Lozo labored to bring it into compliance, losing some of their flexibility to bring in volunteers to help farm and groups to learn how urban farms can work, and to sell produce on the premises. .. At the same time, a host of neighborhood residents spoke out in favor of Gaia Gardens, saying it was a center to build community, and a welcome oasis in the scrubby and weedy environs along the sandy arroyo. .. Aubrey said in a telephone interview that he had ridden his bike along the trail behind Gaia Gardens and seen the plantings taking shape there. When he heard about the issues it was having with zoning and city ordinances, he thought it would be ripe for filming. .. He hadnt had a particular interest in urban farming before, but has been a filmmaker in Santa Fe for 34 years. Previous work of his includes A Thousand Voices about tribal women in the Southwest, which aired on New Mexico PBS and won an award from New Mexico Women in Film, and the Emmy-winning Canes of Power, which explores the history of the canes President Abraham Lincoln presented to tribes to signal their sovereignty. .. Hearing about Gaia Gardens, Aubrey said, he wondered with all our best intentions, with the interest so broad in eating healthfully, it seems kind of like a no-brainer. Why wouldnt we love this? The filmmakers considered broadening the project to a feature-length documentary on urban farming, but the time and money for such a project meant it would not be ready in time to have an impact on the local situation, he said. It would take a long time to get out the word, he said. .. But the film does reach beyond Gaia Gardens in talking about the need for local food sources. .. And that was one of the points that stood out for me. The more centralized any industry or system becomes, the easier it is to derail. .. .. The complete article may be read at the URL above. .. .. Advice to Authors and Editors The GPO Style Manual is intended to facilitate Government printing. Careful observance of the following suggestions will aid in expediting your publication and also reduce printing costs. 1.1. Making changes after submission of copy delays the production of the publication and adds to the expense of the work; therefore, copy must be carefully edited before being submitted to the Government Printing Office. 1.2. Legible copy, not faint reproductions, must be furnished. 1.3. Copy should be on one side only with each sheet numbered consecutively. If both sides of copy are to be used, a duplicate set of copy must be furnished. 1.4. To avoid unnecessary expense, it is advisable to have each page begin with a new paragraph. 1.5. Proper names, signatures, fi gures, foreign words, and technical terms should be written plainly. 1.6. Chemical symbols, such as Al, Cl, Tl are sometimes mistaken for A1, C1, T1. Editors must indicate whether the second character is a letter or a figure. 1.7. Footnote reference marks in text and tables should be arranged consecutively from left to right across each page of copy. 1.8. Photographs, drawings, and legends being used for illustrations should be placed in the manuscript where they are to appear in the publication. Th ey should be on individual sheets, as they are handled separately during typesetting. 1.9. If a publication is composed of several parts, a scheme of the desired arrangement must accompany the fi rst installment of copy. 1.10. To reduce the possibility of costly blank pages, avoid use of new odd pages and half titles whenever possible. Generally these refinements should be limited to quality bookwork. 1.11. Samples should be furnished if possible. They should be plainly marked showing the desired type, size of type page, illustrations if any, paper, trim, lettering, and binding. 1.12. In looseleaf or perforated-on-fold work, indicate folio sequence, including blank pages, by circling in blue. Begin with first text page (title). Do not folio separate covers or dividers. 1.13. Indicate on copy if separate or self-cover. When reverse printing in whole or in part is required, indicate if solid or tone. 1.14. Avoid use of oversize fold-ins wherever possible. This can be done by splitting a would-be fold-in and arranging the material to appear as facing pages in the text. Where fold-ins are numerous and cannot be split, consideration should be given to folding and inserting these into an envelope pasted to the inside back cover. 1.15. Every effort should be made to keep complete jobs of over 4 pages to signatures (folded units) of 8, 12, 16, 24, or 32 pages. Where possible, avoid having more than two blank pages at the end. 1.16. Indicate alternative choice of paper on the requisition. Where possible, confine choice of paper to general use items carried in inventory as shown in the GPO Paper Catalog. 1.17. If nonstandard trim sizes and/or type areas are used, indicate head and back margins. Otherwise, GPO will determine the margins. 1.18. Customers should submit copy for running heads and indicate the numbering sequence for folios, including the preliminary pages. 1.19. Corrections should be made on first proofs returned, as later proofs are intended for verification only. All corrections must be indicated on the R (revise) set of proofs, and only that set should be returned to GPO. 1.20. Corrections should be marked in the margins of a proof opposite the indicated errors, not by writing over the print or between the lines. All queries on proofs must be answered 1.21. WRITING AND WRITERS: STYLE AND WRITING MANUALS : UNITED STATES: GOVERNMENT: NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS ADMINISTRATION: NARA Style Guide

..
.. WRITING AND WRITERS: STYLE AND WRITING MANUALS : UNITED STATES: GOVERNMENT: NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS ADMINISTRATION: NARA Style Guide .. .. National Archives and Records Administration NARA Style Guide http://www.archives.gov/open/plain-writing/style-guide.pdf .. .. Preface .. Clear writing conveys clear thought. NARA writers in all offices must strive for clear communication to explain their increasingly complex work. They write letters, memorandums, finding aids, web pages, blogs, leaflets, reports, articles, exhibit scripts, brochures, budget requests, speeches, forms, and email messages. This style guide establishes agency standards of punctuation, word usage, and grammar that will answer writers most c ommon questions and will, we hope, promote clear and effective writing throughout NARA. .. Style changes over time and even from place to place, depending on the intended audience. These differences do not necessarily make one choice ?wrong.? What is ?right? is consistency within your own work and using the appropriate language and usage for your audience. .. The NARA Style Guide fills two needs. First, the section ?Writing for Plain Language? will help us comply with the Plain Writing Act of 2010. Second, it addresses many of the questions and issues unanswered by the Government Printing Office Style Manual (GPO manual). This guide is based on the GPO manual but includes modifications that reflect current usage. .. The most notable difference from the GPO manual concerns the treatment of numbers. This style guide simplifies the rules. In most cases, writers will spell out numbers under 10 and use numerals for numbers 10 and over. (See section 4.10.) .. The GPO manual is still NARAs primary reference for style. For issues not covered in the NARA guide, continue to consult the GPO manual. .. The appendix, ?Quick Reference,? may be particularly helpful to NARA writers. This list of words and phrases provides quick answers to common questions a bout capitalization, spelling, compound words, and plurals. .. The NARA Style Guide took shape from the agencys specific language needs and will continue to change to reflect the needs and concerns of NARA writers. Use the NARA Style Guide for all NARA communications. .. If you have questions about spelling, grammar, or usage that are not addressed by this guide, contact the Strategy and Communications staff .. Writing in Plain Language .. Writing in plain language means writing clearly. It means writing so that readers can find what they need, understand what they find, and use what they find to meet their needs. The more clearly you communicate, the more likely your readers will grasp what you want them to grasp and do what you want them to do, from filling out a form correctly to complying with a regulation. And the less likely it is that your readers will call or write you to ask questions or express frustration. Ultimately, your job will be easier and more pleasant if you take the time to communicate clearly. .. 1.1 Think about your audience. .. A misconception about plain language is that it means ?dumbing down? your writing so that everyone can read it. Thats not true. The first rule of plain language is write for your audience. That starts with figuring out who your audience is, then focusing on your audiences needs. Here are some questions to ask yourself: Who is my audience? What does my audience already know about the subject? What does my audience need to know? Whats the best way to guide them from their current knowledge to what they need to know? What questions will my audience have? What language will my audience be most familiar with? .. 1.2 Organize your material. .. Were all busyincluding your readers. Nobody wants to waste time slogging through dense, convoluted documents. Write so that your readers can read your document quickly and understand it the first time they read it. Before you start writing, think about what you want to say and what order it makes the most sense to say it. Organize to serve your audiences needs. Think about the questions your audience will have and the order in which those questions will most naturally arise. 2 1.2.1 Use headings and subheadings. Use headings and subheadings to indicate (1) where the important ideas are and (2) where major separations of thought occur. Think of headings as signs along the highway. Readers depend on such signs as much as drivers do. A 20-mile stretch of interstate without any signs would be spooky and aggravating. There are three types of headings: question headings, statement headings, and topic headings. Question headings (for example, How Do I Locate the Records I Want?) are particularly useful in letters and general instructions. Readers move through the document with particular questions in mind, and question headings guide them to the answers. Phrase the question headings from the reader's point of view. In other words, use Will I Be Charged for the Service? rather than Will You Be Charged for the Service? Statement headings are short declarative sentences (for example, Lodging Is Available Nearby) and are the next most engaging. Topic headings (the most common form) are considered the most ?formal,? so management is often most comfortable with them. Topic headings consist of a word or phrase (e.g., Requesting Records), but they are not engaging and are often so vague as to be unhelpful. If topic headings are to be used, make sure they are clear and accurate. 1.2.2 Limit heading levels to three or fewer. While headings are useful for organizing your text, dont use more than three levels. Dividing your document into more pieces at the top levels should allow you to limit subdivisions below the major level to two. In most cases, you will need only the main heading and one level of subheading. The Office of the Federal Register recommends that regulations contain no more than three levels, noting that more than three levels make regulations hard to read and use. 1.2.3 Write short sections. Long paragraphs are daunting and discourage the reader from even trying to understand your material. Short paragraphs are more inviting and are easier to read and understand. 3 Each paragraph should discuss one main idea, not two. But if the idea requires 20 sentences to develop, that doesnt mean you should have a 20-sentence paragraph. Find places to break lengthy paragraphs. If a paragraph is long, the writer will certainly have provided transitional terms in at least a few places. For example, the writer may have started sentences with such words and phrases as Next, Furthermore, In addition, However, or As a result. Paragraphs can also begin with these transitions. Just make sure that the resulting smaller paragraphs are unified in themselves. Short paragraphs also give you the opportunity to insert informative headings into your material. 1.3 Verbs 1.3.1 Use the active voice (unless passive makes more sense). Active voice is the best way to identify who is responsible for what action. In an active sentence, the person or organization thats acting is the subject of the sentence. In a passive sentence, the person or item that is acted upon is the subject of the sentence. Passive voice obscures who is responsible for what and is one of the biggest problems with government documents. Passive Active Mistakes were made. The committee made mistakes. New regulations were proposed. NARA proposed new regulations. Especially in directives, regulations, or instructions, use the active voice to make it clear to the reader who takes what action. Passive Active The form is sent to Business Support Services. The executive sends the form to Business Support Services. The request will be approved by Information Services. Information Services approves the request. The following information must be included. You must include the following information. 4 More than any other writing technique, using active voice and specifying who is performing what action will change the character of your writing. However, to say that the passive voice must be avoided at all cost would mean that we could never write She was born but must always write Her mother bore her. When the actor is understood, implied, or irrelevant, use the passive voice, as in the following example. Meteorologists are predicting snow. Snow is predicted. The passive voice is acceptable whenever the emphasis of the sentence should not be on the actor but rather on what was, is, or will be done. Any of the following sentences could be just fine, depending upon which word the writer thinks deserves emphasis. Passive Active We were amazed by the results. The results amazed us. Materials must be handled with care. You must handle materials with care. Your shipment has been received. We have received your shipment. Many documents must be declassified. We must declassify many documents. The passive voice may also be appropriate when one action follows another as a matter of law, and there is no actor (besides the law itself) for the second action. If you do not pay the royalty on your mineral production, your lease will be terminated. 1.3.2 Use the simplest form of the verb. The simplest and strongest form of a verb is present tense. Using the present tense makes your document more direct and forceful and less complicated. The more you use conditional or future tense, the harder your audience has to work to understand your meaning. These sections describe types of information that would satisfy the application requirements of Circular A-110 as it would apply to this grant program. These sections tell you how to meet the requirements of Circular A-110 for this grant program. .. 1.3.3 Dont hide the verb. .. Verbs are the heart of clear writing. They tell what happened or tell the reader what to do. Avoid hiding verbs by turning them into nouns. Turning verbs into nouns makes them less effective and requires you to use more words than necessary. .. Watch out for the words make, do, give, have, provide, perform, and conduct, which often indicate that a verb has been turned into a noun. .. We made the decision to We decided They did a study of They studied This gives the indication that This indicates This has the tendency to This tends He provided an explanation He explained They performed an assessment of They assessed She conducted a review of She reviewed Have researchers show Ask researchers to show .. 1.3.4 Dont use shall. .. Avoid the ambiguous shall. The word can suggest obligation or simply a future event. Good business writing never forces the reader to interpret. For obligation, use ?must.? When you examine records, you must keep them in their original order. For permission, use ?may.? You may bring a coin purse or wallet into the research room. When recommending a course of action, use ?should.? You and your financial institution should agree on how invoice information will be provided to you. When indicating the future, use ?will.? Our facility will reopen on September 1. .. 1.3.5 Avoid the false subjects It is and There are. .. It is shown in the photographs The photographs show It was proven by the research The research proved It will be argued by the plaintiff The plaintiff will argue There are times when Occasionally/Sometimes There were delays due to Delays were caused by There will be complications unless Complications will occur unless .. 6 .. It is her opinion that there are several issues that need to be resolved. She believes that several issues need to be resolved. .. 1.3.6 Use contractions when appropriate. .. When appropriate, use contractions to foster a conversational tone. While contractions make text less formal, very few documents are purely formal. (An exception is the wedding invitation, in which even the number of the street address is spelled out.) This office will put forth utmost effort to accommodate the needs of researchers. Better: We'll do our best to accommodate your research needs. It is the hope of everyone at the Hoover Library that researchers have benefited from their visit. Better: We hope you've enjoyed your visit. .. Note: Be consistent within a given document and avoid informality when informality is inappropriate. Press releases, public announcements, letters to individuals, and information packets are good candidates for using contractions. Official policy statements and directives can be more formal. .. 1.4 Nouns and pronouns .. 1.4.1 Use everyday words. Clarity begins with the choice of words. When a writer describes an elevator as a vertical transportation system, or refers to a leak as a moisture event, clarity goes out the door. Rather than using subsequent to, use after. Rather than taking a proactive position vis-vis the problematic situation, the writer anticipates the problem. Write to communicate, not to impress. Avoid unnecessarily complicated language used to impress, rather than inform, your audience. That doesnt mean you need to avoid necessary technical terms, if your audience is familiar with them. .. snip .. .. .. The complete publication may be read at the URL above. .. .. DATABASE SEARCHING TECHNIQUE : DATABASE SELECTION : RESEARCH SKILLS AND TRAINING: Improving Research by Broading Database Selection Horizons Beyond the Core Databases in Ones Field and Thinking Outside the Box: What Constitutes Good Databases?
David P. Dillard
..
.. DATABASE SEARCHING TECHNIQUE : DATABASE SELECTION : RESEARCH SKILLS AND TRAINING: Improving Research by Broading Database Selection Horizons Beyond the Core Databases in Ones Field and Thinking Outside the Box: What Constitutes Good Databases? .. .. What constitutes a quality database: .. .. 1. Is the database have adequate search capability. I have run into search interfaces that interpret the boolean "or" as "and" or that cannot handle phrase searches and even cannot do but the simplest search statements. One can do more complex searches on Google than on those tools. 2. Does the database cover core content about its subject area from journals and other publications in other fields. Consider this article title: Finding citations to social work literature: the relative benefits of using web of science, scopus, or google scholar This article could be very useful to social work and other faculty in related fields who need to credential their work. This article is indexed, amongst other places, in Inspec, one of two databases, the other being Compendex, in Elsevier's "Engineering Village". This article is NOT indexed in Social Services Abstracts or in Social Work Abstracts or Social Services Abstracts, two core Social Work databases. The article appeared in Journal of Academic Librarianship, v 38, n 6, p 370-9, Nov. 2012 The two social work databases do not index any of the content from this journal. .. Finding tourism and hospitality core content in the Criminal Justice Abstracts We are not talking about core criminal justice content here like "My merry adventures as a prison escapee." We are looking at core content in tourism such as ecotourism sources and the like. .. Criminal Justice Abstracts A search of this database for tourism OR tourist OR tourists OR museums OR travel OR vacation OR vacations OR vacationing OR "visitor sites of interest" OR ecotourism OR hospitality FINDS 3,122 Results Sample Titles Convenience stores and routine activities in a summer tourist destination Hair drug testing in the new Brazilian regulation to obtain professional driver's licence: no parallel to any other law enforcement in the world. Cruise Ship Law in Australia. Queen Elizabeth II will attend Magna Carta anniversary ceremonies at Runnymede. Book Review: Urry J. and Larsen J., The Tourist Gaze 3.0. Health Care Reception Welcomes Conference Attendees. Influence of the Built Environment on Pedestrian Route Choices of Adolescent Girls. Home, Car Use, and Vacation: The Structure of Environmentally Significant Individual Behavior. .. .. ProQuest Criminal Justice A search of this database for tourism OR tourist OR tourists OR museums OR travel OR vacation OR vacations OR vacationing OR "visitor sites of interest" OR ecotourism OR hospitality FINDS 3,937 Results Sample Titles Identifying critical service quality attributes for higher education in hospitality and tourism: Applications of the Kano model and importance-performance analysis (IPA) Engaging students' learning process in business management: A case study of activity-based teaching in hospitality marketing class Risk management within the events industry in Cape Town, South Africa Community-based tourism and local socio-economic development: A case study in Cape Verde Internet success for the small and medium hospitality enterprise: Influence of the owner or manager Promoting Ecotourism Among Young People: A Segmentation Strategy A Socio-Ecological Assessment Aiming at Improved Forest Resource Management and Sustainable Ecotourism Development in the Mangroves of Tanbi Wetland National Park, The Gambia, West Africa Lessons from the application of sustainability indicators to community-based ecotourism ventures in Southern Africa .. Academic libraries and their colleges or universities spend a great deal of money on databases and amount of use of these tools is a key reason for leasing or not leasing access ot these tools. Encouraging off prescription use for these tools when there is content to back the advice may significantly expand the use of these tools and better justify their retention. .. 3. Does the database provide multi-step searching like OVID, EbscoHost, the current Worldcat First Search interface and if you look hard enough Proquest. They have managed to hide that feature quite well at Proquest. Databases that permit only one step searches force users to either do very simple searches or on the other hand they are forced to accurately construct complex boolean algebra statements. This makes such tools less usable. .. 4. How good is the subject field coverage of a database in its field(s) of coverage. .. 5. Does the database have the ability to find one word in so many words of another. If you are searching for literature reviews on a topic and do not also search review(s) of the literature as well as literature survey and survey of the literature you may miss some important bibliographies. Proximity searching allows one to find these two words say ten words apart so the one may find sources with phrases like "review of the most important and significant literature" or "review of the British and French literature" and so forth. Putting all four phrases in a search tool like Google does not leave much room for other search terms. The single step search can be very limiting search tool obstacle. .. 6. A feature called truncation allows one to put a symbol, often the asterisk, at the end of a word root and pick up variant endings of a word root. For example relig* will find religion, religions, religious, religiously, etc. One must use this tool with care. A search of China and hospital* may find some great articles about medical care in China, but it also may find some very intersting articles about Asian restaurants as one word off of that truncated word root is hospitality. .. In EBSCOHost, this formula can be used with many search steps to follow, as needed, for cutting our literature review seaarch terms down to size: (literature n10 review*) or (survey* n10 literature) to find such phrases such as surveying the literature, literature surveys, reviewing the literature and so forth. .. 7. The ability to limit concepts or groups of concepts to specific database record fields, such as, but not limited to, title of the article or book, subject headings, year of publication or a year range, sources that are peer reviewed and from journals only and so forth. Good databases permit more than one of these methods to be used in combination .. The ability to streamline a search to a very limited group of results that are on target will both speed ones work and reduce the fatigue that comes from looking at very long lists of sources from which a low percentage are worth pursuing. There is a learning curve, but it is worth that curve to end up with the quality results one needs for ones research. .. I have published a number of articles about database searching that should add to the information above. https://sites.google.com/site/daviddillardsarticles/ My research guides also will help in this area Research Guide Directory https://sites.google.com/site/researchguidesonsites/ .. .. Bobby Jindal, a Republican presidential candidate, said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "Every time this happens, it seems like the person has a history of mental illness. We need to make sure the systems we have in place actually work." .. Jindal went on to say that it is important that existing gun laws are followed, reiterating that the shooter, 59-year-old John Russell Houser, should not have been allowed to purchase a gun because of his mental illness. .. "I think every state should strengthen their laws," Jindal said. "Every state should make sure this information is being reported in the background system. We need to make sure that background system is working. Absolutely, in this instance, this man never should have been able to buy a gun." .. .. Bobbi Kristina Brown, the daughter of late Grammy-winning pop star Whitney Houston and R&B singer Bobby Brown, has died at age 22. .. "Bobbi Kristina Brown passed away July, 26 2015, surrounded by her family. She is finally at peace in the arms of God. We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months," a spokesperson for the Houston family told NBC News. Brown died Sunday at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, Georgia. .. The aspiring actress and singer was the only child of Houston and the fourth child of Bobby Brown. .. Brown was found face down and unresponsive in a bathtub in a suburban Atlanta townhome on January 31. Brown's long term partner Nick Gordon, who she referred to as her husband, along with a friend found her. CPR was performed at the scene and Brown was placed on a respirator when admitted to North Fulton Hospital the same day. .. It remains unclear why Brown was unconscious. An investigation into the incident remains open, according to Roswell's chief of police. The investigative file was handed over to the Fulton County District Attorney who will determine whether any charges will be filed, authorities said in late June. .. Brown was moved from North Fulton to Emory University Hospital in Georgia, and then to a rehabilitation facility on March 20. Throughout, her father remained optimistic about his daughter's recovery, even going so far as to tell a Texas concert audience in April that "Bobbi is awake. She's watching me." .. Only days later Cissy Houston, the grandmother of Bobbi Kristina, issued a statement saying her granddaughter remained in an unresponsive state and "while she is no longer in a medically induced coma she has a tracheotomy and according to the doctors she has global and irreversible brain damage." Brown was moved to hospice care on June 24. .. .. The complete article may be read at the URL above. .. .. DATABASE SEARCHING TECHNIQUES: Multi-Step Searching in ProQuest Databases and Google Domain Limited Web Search
David P. Dillard
..
.. DATABASE SEARCHING TECHNIQUES: Multi-Step Searching in ProQuest Databases and Google Domain Limited Web Search .. .. The content of this post comes from information I shared in a discussion on another Listserv list. .. .. In a previous post I indicated that while ProQuest databases do provide a method for multi-step searching, it is somewhat complex and difficult to find on their search interface, quoting this post from that point: .. .. "Thanks for bringing these Proquest tips to the discussion. My point was that for an undergraduate or even a graduate student getting to a search history and using it in Proquest is convoluted and I am not sure students are easily figure this out and use it. In EBSCOHost one must click on Search History and you are good to go with your multi-step searching. You are quite correct that a very long one step search can be executed in Command line search, BUT!!!! 1. The user must figure out how to use parenthesis to correctly parse the "and" and "or" content for this complex search. 2. Figure out that they need to click on "Advanced" and from the drop down menu select "Command Line" 3. Do multiple search steps in Command line, clearing previous search steps 4. Click on Recent searches at the top of the screen, it is preceded by the number of search steps you have done. 5 Only numeric search combinations are accepted on this screen. Sample search from Proquest Social Science Select item 7 S7 S5 AND S6 ProQuest Social Science Journals 21 Actions Select item 6 S6 all("SOCIAL SCIENCE" OR "POLITICAL SCIENCE") ProQuest Social Science Journals 486088* Actions Select item 5 S5 all("SYSTEMATIC REVIEWS") ProQuest Social Science Journals 323 Actions Select item 4 S4 all("SYSTEMATIC REVIEWS") ProQuest Social Science Journals 323 Actions Select item 3 S3 all("SYSTEMATIC REVIEWS") ProQuest Social Science Journals 323 Actions Select item 2 S2 all("SOCIAL SCIENCE" OR "POLITICAL SCIENCE") ProQuest Social Science Journals 486088* Actions Select item 1 S1 all("SYSTEMATIC REVIEWS") ProQuest Social Science Journals 323 Actions Some titles from the results in step 7 How Contexts and Issues Influence the Use of Policy-Relevant Research Syntheses: A Critical Interpretive Synthesis The Campbell Collaboration Crime and Justice Group Systematic Reviews and Health Policy: The Influence of a Project on Perinatal Care since 1988 Maximizing the Impact of Systematic Reviews in Health Care Decision Making: A Systematic Scoping Review of Knowledge-Translation Resources Extending systematic reviews to include evidence on implementation: Methodological work on a review of community-based initiatives to prevent injuries Wow, if you thought that EBSCOHosts procedure for emailing records was convoluted, this sure has that one beat by miles and in a much more critical area of searching, conducting the search. No wonder students flock back to Google (or Google Scholar or Google Books or Summon if we are lucky) Dealing with the intricacies of database searching requires training and practice of which very little is given. Most complex skill sets at college are taught in semester long courses, not one hour instruction sessions. Now, back to my content on free search tools, I contributed this list: Free Summon http://library.temple.edu Google Scholar Google Books Trip PogoFrog PubMed (but you already know that <g> Worldcat I FORGOT A VERY IMPORTANT ONE WEB SEARCH GOOGLE How many of us have told lots of classes in instruction sessions or one on one. "Do not use Google for serious research" I have my hand raised, but not since October. In October I saw a post that contained one URL that caught my attention on, guess where, of course, MEDLIB-L. I saw this URL, scratched my head and pondered, what else can we do with this. The site: can be replaced with and, but I do see variation from and results when site: is used instead, so try both but site: adds emphasis to that part of the search to the eye of users of the results Please consider these links that I just posted privately and that will be wending their way to my blogs. Quoting from my private post: Please also note that Google web search is a free database and should be used. Consider this search "medical research" AND ("literature review" OR "literature reviews" OR "literature surveys" OR review of the literature" OR survey of the literature" OR "systematic review") Plain Google Search Not wonderful, but not too bad either http://tinyurl.com/nbxj5sb KEEP REMINDING YOURSELF THIS IS GOOGLE!!!!! Three months later, the city Department of Education says there was more to her sad story: The principal had fudged answers on third-graders state English exams, and authorities learned of the cheating allegations the same day she made her fatal leap. All the schools third-grade English scores have been thrown out in the first year its students took the important test. .. The scandal has stirred sorrow and uncertainty after a promising start for Teachers College Community School and clouded the career of a Wall Street worker-turned-educator whod earned praise for her approach. .. People are devastated, Sanayi Canton, a second-grade parent and president of a local education panel, said Monday. It has always been a very open and honest and transparent situation that weve been a part of. .. The allegations, which the city Education Department said it substantiated, come amid debate over testing and the national standards known as the Common Core; teachers unions and some parents say education is too driven by high-pressure tests, while officials say tests are tools to improve schools. Educators have been accused of doctoring scores before; 11 were convicted of criminal charges in a notorious Atlanta case this April. .. Meanwhile, Teachers College Community School seemed poised to prosper in its first round of Common Core tests, which factor in teacher and principal evaluations. .. Intended to pair a public school with the research and other capacities of a noted teacher-education program, Teachers College Community School boasts $30 million in backing from Columbia, graduate students helping out in classrooms and such extra features as a robotics program. Hong Kong (CNNMoney) When the bottom fell out of China's stock market last month, the government in Beijing used every trick in the book to stop its dramatic slide. .. Until Monday, when the Shanghai Composite lost 8.5%, the intervention appeared to have worked. Investors enjoyed two weeks of relative calm, and recovered some of the $3 trillion wiped out since the market peaked in June. .. But was that a good thing, or does the rescue attempt risk longer term damage to China's economy? .. The central bank cut interest rates to a record low, regulators suspended new share listings, and threatened to throw short sellers in jail. Other measures were more desperate: Officials organized the purchase of stocks using central bank cash. Companies were allowed to suspend their own shares at one point more than half the market was frozen. .. snip .. Shanghai stocks had gained roughly 150% over 12 months prior to the crash, despite slower economic growth and weaker company profits. Why act so aggressively to stop a correction in a market that had become so divorced from reality, critics ask? And will Beijing ever allow a greater role for markets? .. China had been edging away from the command and control strategy that prevailed for decades. Reforms meant to strip power from massive state enterprises are underway, and Beijing hopes the yuan will become a currency of global trade and finance. .. Signaling a major shift in approach, the Communist Party promised in 2013 that markets would be allowed to play a "decisive" role in the economy. .. Critics say that the pledge was discarded in the face of a stock market panic, when officials quickly reverted to old habits. .. .. The complete article may be read at the URL above. .. .. WASHINGTON - The Boy Scouts of America, facing litigation, shrinking membership and sweeping acceptance of gay rights, voted on Monday to lift its ban on openly gay troop leaders and employees. .. The national organization will no longer allow discrimination against its paid workers or at BSA-owned facilities. But local troops and councils will be permitted to decide for themselves whether they will allow openly gay volunteer leaders. .. The executive board's vote was taken at the suggestion of the group's president, former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who noted that the scouts are facing potential lawsuits by gay adults who were shut out of positions. But church-state legal experts said the decision will likely just shift the controversy and legal battles from the national group to local troops and councils as volunteers barred from participating file suit. .. "It's changing the target [of litigation] because now it will be all about the local, not the national," said Douglas Laycock, a prominent religious-liberty scholar at the University of Virginia. "It changes the dynamic a lot. It makes it more informal, less visible." .. Gay-equality advocates praised the measure as a start. .. "This was a very important and difficult change for such an organization," said Josh Schiller, an attorney representing Yasmin Cassini, a lesbian in Colorado who was hired to run a scout center but then lost the job when she came out. Schiller is working pro bono with other high-profile lawyers to fight the scout ban. "I definitely think it's the beginning of building inclusive programs. . . . It's halfway where we want to be." .. In a statement released Monday night, the Cradle of Liberty Council, the Boy Scouts' local organization, said it "applauds the leadership of the National Council for its steps in making Scouting programs available nationwide for any youth and qualified adult who agrees to the values of the Scout Oath and Law. .. .. Protesters Question Denver Police Killing of Mentally Ill Native American Death of Paul Castaway reflects that American Indians are most likely racial group to be killed by law enforcement July 22, 2015 5:00AM ET by Tristan Ahtone Aljazeera http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/7/22/ denver-police-shoot-mentally-ill-native-american.html .. A shorter URL for the above link: .. http://tinyurl.com/pn4fs7r .. .. DENVER She knew her son was dead when she heard the gunshots. At least four staccato pops in a matter of seconds. Four bullets fired in the same amount of time needed to open a bottle of soda or to steal a kiss. .. I told [the police] that my son was mentally ill, I tell them that every time I call, said Lynn Eagle Feather. I just asked for help. Instead they killed my son. .. Her son, Paul Castaway, was a Rosebud Sioux tribal citizen who had battled mental illness, drugs and alcohol for years. He had a criminal record including felony weapon possession, assault and DUI and served time. In the past, Eagle Feather could talk him down when he was in crisis; before, when the police were called for help, he was peaceful. This time was different. .. He pulled out a knife and he tried to scare me. I know he was just trying to scare me with it, she said. He was hitting himself on the head and he was like in a psychotic mode. I had never saw him like that before and I was scared. .. On the night Castaway died, police say that he stabbed his mother in the neck. Eagle Feather says her son held a knife to her throat, leaving a small nick. Regardless, thats not up for debate. What is being questioned is why he was shot and killed. .. Police contend that Castaway got dangerously close to officers with a knife, causing them to open fire. But according to eyewitnesses, Castaway was holding the blade to his own throat moments before he was gunned down. That version of events may actually have been recorded. Footage from nearby surveillance cameras is now in the hands of the Denver Police Department. .. I actually saw the surveillance video that shows the shooting, reported Tammy Vigil, a local reporter for Fox 31 Denver who saw the video shortly after the shooting. [You see Paul Castaway] with the knife to his own neck the whole time. Then police shoot him. .. According to a Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice analysis of Centers for Disease Control data, between 1999 and 2011 Native Americans were killed by police at a higher rate than any other racial group in the country. In other words, if the Seattle metro area home to just over 4 million people were made up entirely of American Indians, around 10 people would have been shot and killed by police every year between 1999 and 2011. .. snip .. According to Lane, this case is more than a question of police tactics: Its about mindset. .. The police, they are like a colonial occupying force in these communities, he said. They are not there to serve and protect, they are there to occupy these communities, and that mentality is why people like Paul Castaway get killed. .. I will never be able to hug my son, Ill never be able to wake up and say good morning, said Eagle Feather. He was the closest one to me, of my children, because he had problems and I could understand him more than anybody. .. Vigils have been held every night in the mobile home park where Castaway was shot and killed, while Eagle Feather struggles to make sense of her loss. .. ..
