CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE Amid growing evidence that repeated concussions and blows to the head can have long-term, possibly fatal outcomes, local concussion experts are working to better inform people about head injuries. . Specialists at Cape Regional Medical Centers Concussion Center are gearing up for fall sports season injuries, typically to student athletes although adults and seniors can have such injuries all year. . More awareness about head injuries is needed. . Theres a misconception that concussions are strictly due to sports injuries, but we have a program and treatments that serve kids and adults who get concussions just as much from falls and car accidents, too, said A.J. Weiss, concussion center rehabilitation and treatment manager. . Gov. Chris Christie earlier this year signed a law designating the third Thursday of September as Concussion Awareness Day in New Jersey. Legislators said they hoped awareness would lead to education about the serious consequences of concussions, treatment and resources. . Of the 2.8 million traumatic brain injury-related emergency department visits and hospitalizations in 2013, most were concussions, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and about 300,000 children who were treated in a single year for a concussion or brain injury got hurt while playing sports or in recreation. . Scientists have explored more about concussions in recent years, especially as high rates of head injuries are found in sports such as football. Researchers have looked into how repeated head injuries and concussions could lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease. . A report published in July in the Journal of the American Medical Association by Dr. Ann McKee, chief neurologist of VA Boston Healthcare System and director of the CTE Center at Boston University, said 110 of 111 brains of deceased National Football League players were found to have CTE. . Part of what we do for education is informing people about second impact syndrome, which can be fatal, Weiss said. It happens when someone sustains a second concussion before the first one heals, and that could lead to weeks or months of therapy, permanent damage, or worst case, death. . High profile events like the Olympics bring the hope that witnessing and celebrating dedicated athletes at the top of their game, will inspire young people to take up sport and physical activities that help them develop confidence, lead more satisfying lives, and not least, secure long-term health by reducing their risk for developing chronic illness like diabetes, obesity, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. . But unfortunately, if they don't take appropriate measures, young athletes can instead, end up in pain, on a different path to poor health, due to avoidable sport injury. . James R. Andrews, a former president of the American Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), said in May this year, the US has experienced a tremendous rise in the number of young people taking up sport. Estimates show 3.5 million children aged 14 and under receive medical treatment for sport-related injuries, while high-school athletes account for another 2 million a year. . "This makes sports the leading cause of adolescent injury. Along with time away from school and work, these injuries can have far-reaching effects," said Andrews. . This article looks at some of the common and less common injuries in young athletes. It then reviews a new project that is tracking injuries in Olympic athletes, introduces some ideas about avoiding and minimizing injury, and finishes with a list of tips for preventing sport injury in children. Common Sport Injuries . According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, which is part of the National Institutes of Health in the US, the most common sport injuries are due to accidents, poor training practices or using the wrong gear or equipment. People can also hurt themselves because they are not in shape, or because they don't warm up or stretch enough. . Some injury experts in the US have said they are also seeing more and more young athletes injured because of overuse and doing too much, and this may partially explain the growing numbers that drop out of sport by the eighth grade. The most common sports injuries are: . Knee injuries, Sprains and strains, Swollen muscles, Achilles tendon injuries, Pain along the shin bone, and Fractures and dislocations. . snip . Take breaks: during practice sessions and games to reduce risk of injury and prevent heat illness. . Use the correct gear: this should be right for the sport and fit properly, for instance pads for neck, shoulders, elbows, chest, knees, and shins, as well as helmets, mouthpieces, face guards, protective cups, and/or eyewear. And don't assume because you are wearing protective gear you can perform more dangerous and risky things. . Drink plenty of fluids: before, during and after exercise or play to avoid heat illness; wearing light clothing also helps. Coaches and trainers should reduce or stop practices or competitions when heat or humidity is high. . Build muscle strength: do your conditioning exercises before games and during practice to strengthen the muscles you use during play. . Increase flexibility: by stretching before and after games and practice. . Use the proper technique: coaches and trainers should reinforce this during the playing season. . Play safe: coaches and leaders should enforce strict rules against headfirst sliding (eg in baseball), spearing (football), and body checking (ice hockey), and stop the activity if there is any pain. . The outpouring of volunteer assistance (think Cajun Navy) is truly an outstanding example of a citizenry united in selfless acts of rescue neighbors helping neighbors in crisis. This outreach by thousands of Americans to other Americans stands in stark contrast to the recent news of hateful acts perpetuated by an isolated (but highly publicized) few. . The rescue operations in Houston, and nearby areas, have crossed racial, ethnic, religious and gender boundaries, very clearly demonstrating that Americans have great concern for all of their fellow citizens. This outpouring of humanity is a clarion call for all Americans to reaffirm that Americas rich diversity is the strength of our nation. . snip . With all the political interest in our national infrastructure, the rebuilding of Southeast Texas can serve as a first, shining example of how that national project can be made to work and made to work directly for those citizens sorely in need of restoration of their everyday lives. Will the White House and Congress agree now on an infrastructure project, and move fast enough to help victims of Harvey rebuild, or will we have more red-tape and political posturing? . snip . Let us speculate that, in a rare show of consensus, even unity, the combined efforts of the president, Congress and the pertinent federal agencies can be marshaled to kick off one of the greatest public-service and civil-engineering feats ever attempted, in full cooperation with state and local authorities with the showcase for the effort being the precincts surrounding Corpus Christi, Houston and countless other affected towns and cities near the Gulf Coast. . Flexibility in legislation at the state level will be needed to supplement federal assistance. Famously anti-tax Texans may need to explore a method to raise discreet taxes and fees that expire against hard deadlines, with no renewal mechanism, with the proceeds dedicated solely to the relief and rebuilding effort. . Of course, there is an upside to the rebuilding, especially in that it will invigorate the private sector and create jobs for those in desperate need. Many municipal and commercial buildings have been impacted and will need materials to rebuild. Damaged infrastructure will need repair and replacement, including roads, highways, railways, subways, ports, pipelines, generators, and sewer systems. At least 45 people are confirmed dead as of this morning, while the economic toll is estimated in the tens of billions. Mark Strassmann has been there through it all: . Harvey hit Texas with Old Testament wrath -- a deluge along the state's Gulf Coast that dumped more than four feet of rain in four days. . Watery misery kept rising in Harris County, which includes Houston. By mid-week, 30 percent of the county -- 450 square miles -- was under water. One man, who dove out of his truck as it became swamped, told Strassmann, "I thought it was just a couple of feet, you know? I didn't think it was that deep until it was too late. I couldn't do nothing about it." . Houston was in over its head. Rescues became a daily, even hourly drama. "The current was getting high, we had to bust a window to get out," said resident Gillis Layho. . Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner had decided against evacuating residents in America's fourth largest city. "You cannot evacuate 6.5 million people within two days," he said. "You can not; that would be chaotic. We would be putting people more in harm's way." . In one of America's most flood-prone major cities, relentless rains swamped neighborhoods and highways. RVs are lying on their sides, windows blown out. Debris is everywhere. Any trailer that wasn't moved before the storm was destroyed, says Buddy Seeds, an owner there. . Riding a golf cart through the park, he shows a newly built rental cabin that's been lifted off its foundation and flung at least 300 yards away. "That one floated all the way to the dunes," he says, pointing at the unit. The deck is all that remains. Mangled metal and snapped wood are strewn across the park, which is busy again, but with people hauling away ruined homes, or checking what can be saved. One man hangs sopping wet clothes on a line next to his damaged home. He hopes they are salvageable. . Seeds and other owners say the storm's massive power caught them by surprise. About 4 feet of storm surge flooded the area from the nearby bay, flinging every trailer onto its side. . "The wind is what started the ball rolling ... and then the water finished them off," Seeds says. . A week after Hurricane Harvey slammed into the coast near Corpus Christi, Texas, and then dumped foot after foot of rain on Houston and its neighbors, we crisscrossed the 200 miles between the two cities to witness what the storm had left behind. . VERONA When Samantha Willcutt was an undergrad student at Mississippi State University, she waited tables at an upscale restaurant called The Veranda, eventually working her way up to manager. . She saw how really good food made people happy, but she wanted a more intimate setting, so after graduation, she went to work for Zoes Kitchen, which specialized in made-from-scratch, fresh, healthy Mediterranean-type fare. . I traveled around the country, opening new restaurants and managing them for a while, said Willcutt, 37. I was reading about nutrition all the time and what food was doing to my body and other peoples bodies. I wanted to push myself to learn more. . So, after 10 years in the restaurant business, Willcutt headed back to MSU and earned a masters degree in nutrition in 2016. . While I was getting my masters, I did a graduate assistantship in the Office of Nutrition Education at MSU Extension, she said. It was a nice combination of learning about nutrition and helping people. Thats when I said, Yep, this is for me. . In October 2016, Willcutt became one of three regional dietitians Extension hired to help in the fight against obesity and chronic disease in Mississippi. . The state has the second highest adult obesity rate in the nation, according to "The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America" released in August 2017. Mississippi's adult obesity rate is currently 37.3 percent, up from 23.7 percent in 2000 and from 15 percent in 1990. . Willcutt oversees the northeast region of the state. Two others came on board this summer: Kaitlin DeWitt oversees the southeast region and Juaqula Madkin manages the southwest region. The northwest position hasnt been filled yet. . Through the Office of Nutrition Education, they oversee Extensions Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education, or SNAP-Ed. They work with SNAP-Ed nutrition educators in county offices to help coordinate efforts to teach low-resource families ways to improve their diets, increase physical activity and manage their food resources. . When Sylvia Byrd was hired as the director in 2015, she brought a new attitude to the SNAP-Ed program, said Willcutt, a Starkville native. She didnt just want us focused on education. She wanted to expand the efforts and implemented PSE policy, systems and environment all moving parts that work together. Policy influences the system, which changes the environment. . .
