Overweight/Obesity Linked to Eight More Cancers

.

.

Being overweight/obese is already known to increase the risk for certain cancers, but this association has just become much wider. Another eight cancers have been added to the list, joining the five already there.

.

The new findings come from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the World Health Organization (WHO). They are published in the IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention, Volume 16: Body Fatness, which provides an update of part of IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention Volume 6: Weight Control and Physical Activity, published in 2002.

.

A summary was published online August 25 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

.

Rather than saying that overweight/obesity increases the risk for cancer, the IARC has presented its findings another way: "the absence of excess body fatness reduces the risk of cancers."

.

The IARC confirmed its previous findings (published in 2002) for five cancers ? colorectal, esophageal (adenocarcinoma), renal cell carcinoma, breast cancer in postmenopausal women, and uterine endometrial cancer.

.

Now, from a new evaluation of published scientific literature, the agency has added eight more cancers to that list: stomach (gastric cardia), liver, gall bladder, pancreas, ovarian, thyroid, meningioma, and multiple myeloma.

.

There is also limited evidence suggesting a link for three other cancers ? fatal cancer of the prostate, breast cancer in men, and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

.

Several mechanisms linking excess body fat with carcinogenesis were identified, including chronic inflammation and dysregulation of the metabolism of sex hormones, the IARC notes.

California High School Football: Concussions Spike, Participation Drops

As high school football teams around the Bay Area kicked off their season this weekend, new statistics show the king of all prep sports, battered by head trauma headlines and parental pressure, is drawing fewer players than it did a decade ago amid a dramatic increase in concussion diagnoses.

.

High school football participation in California is down 7 percent over the past decade, with some schools dropping teams or even their entire football programs, according to hospital and high school athletics statistics compiled by this newspaper. Every other major high school sport has seen participation grow over that period, and for the first time, track and field has more athletes, knocking football off its pedestal.

.

"Given the disproportionate number of serious injuries I've seen related to tackle football, I have very real concerns about allowing my son to play the sport," he said of his elementary school-aged child.

Make no mistake, football isn't the only sport impacted by concussions; the state's medical stats do not break the concussion numbers down by sport. Some youth soccer leagues, for instance, have implemented rules barring players from "heading" the ball. However, there are in general fewer concerns about head trauma among soccer players, and participation in the sport statewide has increased by almost 16 percent since 2006, with 99,044 boys and girls playing last year, according to California Interscholastic Federation statistics.

.

Amid the sobering concussion numbers, football -- which remains the most dangerous mainstream youth sport, according to studies -- has fallen to become the second most popular sport on high school campuses. With overall participation numbers falling, youth sports officials are paying attention.

.

Since the NFL implemented its new concussion protocol amid much publicity in 2007, fewer high school athletes have chosen to play the sport. In California, 100,538 mostly boys snapped on chin straps last year, down from a high of 108,065 in 2006. The new most popular high school sport, track and field, had 101,851 boys and girls competing last school year, a 15 percent increase since 2006.

.

"The reason I think the youth football numbers have dropped is due to the issue of concussions," said Roger Blake, California Interscholastic Federation executive director. "Parents, rightfully so, are asking questions and have concerns."

.

Blake, whose agency oversees the state's high school athletics, said the drop was precipitated by parents pulling their boys from Pop Warner and youth tackle leagues years ago.

.

"Now those kids are in high school," Blake said. According to data from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, 1.52 million youths nationwide ages 6-12 played tackle football in 2009, but the numbers for that group dropped to 1.23 million last year.

.

Mission San Jose High School in Fremont dropped its entire football program -- freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams -- this year because of fewer kids participating. It wasn't sudden; the school competed with 40 players last year, down from 99 in 2009, according to state data.

.

"I do think the concussion concerns are a reality and did contribute to the decline in numbers over the past few years," said Tom Thomsen, the school's athletic director.

Louisiana, Its Floods, and the Presidential Question

Louisiana, the history of rain and flooding flows through the culture. Whether from the skies, the rivers, or the encroaching ocean, the people of the southern half of this subtropical state are pitted in a constant contest against water. Indeed, but for seasonal flooding through geologic history, much of the very land they live on would not exist.

.

But even for the Bayou State, the deluge that began on August 11th was extraordinary. More than two feet of rain fell in seventy-two hours across a wide band of the state north and west of New Orleans, causing local tributaries to reach flood stages never before recorded. More than sixty thousand homes and businesses were inundated. A sixty-mile stretch of Interstate 12 was shut down, stranding more than a hundred motorists in their cars. In all, more than a hundred thousand residents had to be evacuated out of the flood zone. And unlike the traditional televised countdown that precedes the arrival of hurricanescomplete with B-roll footage of cleared-out store shelves and boarded-up windowsthe 2016 flood appeared more or less out of nowhere, a slow-moving low-pressure system conjured seemingly overnight.

.

The combination of the sudden onset of disaster and the perceived lack of attention to their plight by the national media produced strong feelings of aggrievement among the states residents. And it didnt take long for that anger to home in on the figure of President Obama, who, for reasons that perplexed many victims, opted to ride out the disaster on Marthas Vineyard instead of visiting the flood zone or even tossing on a jacket and making some televised statement of support. Soon enough the meme of Obama in golf shorts squeezing in another eighteen holes juxtaposed with images of evacuated refugees and flooded communities began to circulate widely on social media. Matters werent helped when Donald Trump showed up near Baton Rouge with a semi-trailer full of supplies. (I think Obama just had a par on 16, one Baton Rouge friend texted me from the flood zone during Trumps visit).

.

The issue of federal response to natural disasters is, for obvious reasons, a touchy one in South Louisiana. Its been more than a decade, but memories of the federal governments botched response to Hurricane Katrina still vex many residents. In President Obamas seemingly nonchalant attitude, many saw a reminder of President George W. Bushs ineptitude in the days following that deadly hurricane. The comparison seems unfair based on the facts. Obama apparently stayed in close contact with Louisianas Governor John Bel Edwards, who, concerned about diverting resources to cope with the Presidential entourage, said he was O.K. with Obama holding off on a visit. In stark contrast to the delays, red tape, and managerial incompetence that snarled the federal response to Katrina, Louisiana officials of both parties have praised the initial federal response to this months flood. Craig Fugate, the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, was on site almost immediately, and more than a thousand fema staff members were deployed in the days after the storm. Jeh Johnson, the Secretary of Homeland Security, also toured the region.

.

Given that the federal government seems to have supplied all the requested help, worked closely with state officials, and been attentive to the needs of victims, it can be asked, What difference would it have made if the President had shown up earlier? Not that much, Obama seemed to say when addressing the criticism surrounding his delayed visit during a tour of the flood zone, earlier this week. One of the benefits of being five months short of leaving here, he said at a curbside press conference in a Baton Rouge neighborhood, is I dont worry too much about politics.

.

Part of the local criticism of Obama is certainly political. Louisiana is among the reddest states in the country, and many of the rural parishes north of New Orleans that were hit hardest by the flood are decidedly conservative.

In Louisiana, the Political Mess May Outlast the Flood

A feud over federal relief looms in Washington, but first the country just needs to pay attention.

BaATON ROUGE, La. Imagine everything you own, dunked in dirty water and mounded on the curb outside your house. Old VHS tapes, the piano, the wardrobe, the family photos. The water came up so quickly you couldnt save anything. Now, imagine the same thing at the house next door and the one across the street. All the way down the block and the block after that. Ramparts of debris, piled head-high in front of every home. Thats how things look right now across whole neighborhoods of Baton Rouge and the surrounding counties, or parishes as theyre called in Louisiana. Its all the more breathtaking because it wasnt supposed to happen here. This isnt below-sea level New Orleans caught in the path of a hurricane. This is the high-and-dry state capital. This is where people fled after Hurricane Katrina, and, ironically, where many stayed, thinking they were finally out of harms way.

.

And yet here we are, with 13 dead and perhaps 40,000 homes damaged (the estimate keeps climbing) after a storm that dropped more than 20 inches of rain in some areas over the space of a few days. Meteorologists pegged the odds of seeing an event like that in a given year at between 0.2 percent and 0.1 percenta once-in-a-1,000-years storm. Nearly a third of the state has been declared a federal disaster area.

.

Two weeks after the rain finally stopped and the flooding began to recede, a reflexive need to help has taken hold. Co-workers, church groups and perfect strangers are still turning up to help stunned flood survivors tear out sodden drywall and insulation. Neighbors downriver, who have done all this before, are eager to lend a hand. As are the nonprofit groups that sprang up in Katrinas wake, with intimate knowledge to pass along about battling the red tape of the recovery bureaucracy and the black mold endemic to water-logged houses. While the flood was still rising around peoples homes, a fleet of good Samaritans with fishing boats, known locally as the Cajun Navy, came to the rescue. In Lafayette, a city to the west of Baton Rouge where low-lying neighborhoods had been swallowed by the Vermilion River, I ran into a couple who had driven a half hour from Opelousas with a boat in tow. They were sick of watching the disaster unfold on Facebook and the TV news. People need help, they said.

.

But this kind of goodwill is going to do only so much for beleaguered flood survivors. And thats where the politics of Americas latest natural disaster will get dicey. Start with the local officials in charge of hauling off all of that putrid debristhe contractor in charge in Baton Rouge says he has enough trucks; well seeand go all the way up to Louisianas new Democratic governor and the Washington lawmakers holding on to the federal purse strings. Data from the local chamber of commerce show there were twice as many homes inundated in the region as active flood insurance policies. Local officials estimate that nearly half the homes that took on water in East Baton Rouge werent even inside areas where mortgage companies require flood coverage. If these people are going to fully recover, it will be up to state or federal taxpayers to bear the burden.

.

First, the good news. The man in charge at the Federal Emergency Management Agency these days is Craig Fugate and not Michael Brown, who became the face of a botched federal response after Katrina. Brown still arguesas recently as last year in this magazine, actuallythat he was not to blame for the ghastly suffering that took place in the Superdome and elsewhere, saying the important decisions were out of his hands. But its hard not to feel better about the new guys track record. We learned in 2005 after Katrina that Brown, before his time at FEMA, used to work for the International Arabian Horse Association. Fugates rumis basically just a list of dozens of storms that he helped respond to while he was an emergency manager in Florida, first at the county level and then for the state. So far, he hasnt had a heck of a job moment damage his career the way Brown did.

Graham Kinchen had an emergency when a sandbag wall near his home began to fall apart.

.

The wall was protecting his house in Baton Rouge, Louisiana from the recent flooding.

.

He let people know about his problem on Facebook and by telephone. Within five minutes, friends gathered to help rebuild the wall.

.

The incident shows how neighbors have helped each other in response to the recent flooding in Baton Rouge and nearby communities. Baton Rouge is the capital of the southern state of Louisiana.

.

Storms and flooding hit the area from August 8th to 14th. Thirteen people were killed and about 100,000 homes were damaged. Thousands of people are homeless. Many are staying in shelters or the homes of friends or family.

.

Spirit of Cooperation

.

We have seen a great spirit of cooperation, with neighbors, churches and friends pitching in, said Peter Kovacs, editor of The Advocate, the daily newspaper in Baton Rouge. Many of us have unexpected houseguests, and were making a great adventure of it.

.

Kinchen and his wife, Denise, use a boat to get from their front door to the road. Sandbags have been keeping most of the flood waters out of their house.

.

Louisiana has suffered severe flooding before. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 killed 1,833 people and heavily damaged or destroyed 300,000 homes.

.

Many residents of New Orleans left their flooded homes behind and moved to other cities, including Baton Rouge. Eleven years later, many former New Orleans residents remain in Baton Rouge.

.

Obama: Confident Rebuilding Will Move Forward

.

Sometimes when these kinds of things happen, it can seem a little bit too much to bear, said President Barack Obama. Obama was in Baton Rouge Tuesday, noting that he had visited New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina when he was a U.S. senator.

.

Obama said he is confident flooded communities in Baton Rouge and nearby communities will recover, just as many neighborhoods in New Orleans did after Hurricane Katrina.

.

snip

.

Competition for News Coverage

.

I think people are a little disaster weary, plus there are other competing stories, Vitter said.

.

Both Vitter and Obama praised the willingness of people to help each other.

.

They spoke to a young African-American man, who was helping his father clean out his flooded home. The man was also helping his dads elderly white neighbor, who lives alone.

.

The work of removing flooded walls, floors and furniture is not easy.

.

Kevin White has been working on flood relief for the past week in Saint Amant, Louisiana. He said the smells at the water-damaged houses are terrible.

.

White is housing a family of four who were flooded out of their own home. He and the family spent the past few days tearing out walls and throwing out everything else damaged in his guests flooded house. The damaged things represent almost everything the family owned, he said.

The state of Louisiana continues to deal with a significant level of flooding and one of the worst natural disasters in recent years. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Castro and Administrator Contreras-Sweet of the Small Business Administration visited Louisiana today to meet with elected officials, response officials, and survivors to continue to support Governor Edwards priorities on housing and businesses.

.

Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson traveled to Louisiana last week to assess damages with Governor Edwards, federal and state responders, and the National Guard, meet with survivors in shelters, and receive an update on the response to ongoing flooding in the state. During the press conference with Governor Edwards, Secretary Johnson reiterated the Presidents message that the federal government will continue to do everything we can to help the survivors and get people back into homes.

.

So here's what you should know about the federal response in Louisiana and the resources that you or anyone you know who is impacted by flooding can use:

.

Federal Response

.

President Obama has declared 20 parishes for a major disaster for severe storms and flooding, a declaration that makes federal funding available to affected people in Acadia, Ascension, Avoyelles, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Evangeline, Iberia, Iberville, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Vermilion, Washington and West Feliciana. In addition to the 20 parishes, FEMA is conducting a joint federal and state damage assessment in Assumption and St. Charles.

.

More than 27,800 NFIP policyholders submitted claims for flood loss, and more than 122,000 individuals and households registered for assistance. FEMA approved more than $205 million in financial support to flood survivors in Louisiana. This total includes more than:

.

$155 million to help survivors with temporary rental assistance, essential home repairs, and other disaster-related needs
$55 million in advanced payments to flood insurance policyholders who sustained damages and have filed a claim

.

Here's how FEMA is leading the coordination of federal assistance on the ground in Louisiana:

.

More than 2,400 federal staff are on the ground in Louisiana supporting flood response activities.

.

FEMA provided more than 740,000 liters of water, 635,000 meals, 12,800 cots, and 12,500 blankets to Louisiana for distribution to survivors.
More than 270 Disaster Survivor Assistance Team members are on the ground and at shelters to address immediate and emerging needs of disaster survivors including: on-site registration, applicant status checks, on-the-spot needs assessments, and access to partners offering survivors services.

.

FEMA Mobile Emergency Response Support (MERS) personnel and equipment are deployed to support the state with secure and non-secure voice, video, and information services to support emergency response communications needs. This includes 48 MERS personnel, 19 Mobile Communications Office Vehicles (MCOV), and 51 additional vehicles.

.

The U.S. Department of Transportation made $2 million in emergency relief funds immediately available through the Federal Highway Administration to help repair roads and bridges in the affected areas. The funds will also help stabilize structures to prevent further damage and set up detours until permanent repairs are completed.

.

The Corporation for National Community Service deployed more than 600 AmeriCorps members, including FEMA Corps and AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams, to support shelter operations, home clean-up operations, survivor call centers and disaster survivor assistance teams.

.

The American Red Cross shelters are housing approximately 2,500 people in 18 community shelters. Since the flooding began last week, ARC provided more than 45,000 overnight stays in shelters and served more than 356,000 meals and snacks, and 126,000 relief items. More than 2,500 ARC personnel, many of whom are volunteers, are supporting the flood response effort.
The Environmental Protection Agency is assisting both the Louisiana Department of Health and Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality with flood debris removal and ensuring the water systems can provide safe drinking water. The state continues to test 46 water systems that impact more than 15,000 households.

.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services activated its Emergency Prescription Assistance Program to pay for prescriptions and medical equipment for disaster survivors without health insurance. Louisiana patients may obtain a free 30-day supply of medications or medical supplies at any participating pharmacy here.
Housing Assistance

.

The state of Louisiana, with funding support from FEMA, is launching the Shelter at Home program. This allows residents who qualify to safely live in their own homes as temporary shelters while they plan and carry out permanent repairs. Detailed information, guidelines, and online pre-registration for the Shelter at Home program will be available on Monday, Aug. 29, at www.ShelteratHome.Louisiana.gov

.

In addition to the states Shelter at Home program, the Multi Family Lease and Repair Program may provide funds to make rental units livable again in order to lease them to provide temporary housing to eligible disaster survivors. Interested property owners can call 225-382-1464 or email fema-ia-dhops@...

.

FEMA activated its Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) program to make participating hotels or motels available for eligible disaster survivors who are currently residing in a personal vehicle, hotel or motel, shelter, or place of employment. There are more than 1,120 households checked into hotels and motels under the program.

.

FEMA completed more than 27,900 home inspections. Additionally, FEMA is also using Geographic Information System (GIS) housing data to determine inaccessibility based on the location of an applicants address.

.

Open for Business

.

The National Business Emergency Operations Center is working in coordination with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce National Foundation Corporate Citizenship Center and nearly 60 national companies engaged in assisting survivors in the Louisiana flooding with donations of time, money, services, and goods to relief organizations. These companies are also deploying teams to help efforts on the ground, waiving fees, reducing costs for clean-up supplies, and many other forms of help.

.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) has six business recovery centers open, one in Livingston Parish, one in Tangipahoa Parish, one in Ascension Parish, two in East Baton Rouge Parish and one in Lafayette Parish. SBA is providing low-interest loans to Louisiana survivors and businesses to assist with uninsured and underinsured flood-related losses. The SBA received 2,841 applications and approved $14 million in disaster loans.

.

Apply for Assistance

.

how to file a claim with FEMADisaster Recovery Centers (DRC) will continue to open in locations identified by the state to provide information to survivors. Thirteen Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) are open in Ascension, Baton Rouge, Iberia, St. Helena, St. Martin, Tangipahoa, and West Feliciana parishes where survivors can apply for assistance and meet face-to-face with recovery specialists.

.

Disaster survivors do not need to go to a DRC in order to receive disaster assistance. To find the nearest Disaster Recovery Center, visit www.fema.gov/DRC, use the FEMA Mobile Application or text DRC and your zip code to 43362 (4FEMA).

.

If you are a resident or business owner who has sustained losses in the designated parishes, you can apply for assistance from FEMA by registering online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired. The numbers are toll-free, and will operate from 7am to 10pm (local time) seven days a week until further notice.

.

First and foremost, you should return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.

.

If you can safely return to your home, and have filed an insurance claim or applied for FEMA assistance:

.

Be ready when an adjuster or housing inspector calls
Take pictures

.

Make a list

.

Remove water damaged items to prevent mold

.

Don't have damaged items hauled away until adjuster or inspector sees or gives the ok

.

An important note: When cleaning up your home, assume everything touched by flood water is contaminated and will have to be disinfected. Residents who are able to start cleaning up should do so with care.

.

If you are a veteran and your home has been impacted by the floods, the VA has provided guidance on how to ensure you receive the assistance you need here.

.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSA) has activated its Disaster Distress helpline. This toll-free, multilingual, crisis support service is available 24/7 via telephone (1-800-985-5990) and SMS (text TalkWithUs to 66746) to residents in the U.S. and its territories who are experiencing emotional distress.

.

APPLY NOW

.

No, Republicans, The Louisiana Flood is not Obamas Katrina

Sean Colarossi

Monday August 22nd, 2016 at 8:00 pm

The problem with George W. Bush's response to Hurricane Katrina wasn't just the bad optics; it was that his actual response was consistent with those optics.

Over the course of Barack Obamas presidency, Republicans have made a valiant effort to label certain news events Obamas Katrina in an attempt to sink his presidency the way Hurricane Katrina severely damaged George W. Bushs.

.

From the BP oil spill to Healthcare.govs initial website glitches, right-wing politicians and media figures have quite commendably tried to paint every setback of the past eight years with this brush.

.

Each time, theyve overplayed their hand and looked silly.

.

Now, as Louisiana recovers from a devastating flood, the Obamas Katrina frenzy from Republicans is once again in full swing. According to them, its the height of hypocrisy that liberals hammered Bush for his response to Katrina while giving Obama a pass for his so-called terrible response to the Louisiana flooding.

.

Once again, theyre overplaying their hand and looking silly.

.

The problem with George W. Bushs response to Hurricane Katrina wasnt just the bad optics; it was that his actual response was consistent with those optics. It wasnt that Bush didnt land in New Orleans and immediately tour the devastation area; it was that his federal government took an unacceptable amount of time to provide resources like food, water, and shelter to thousands of stranded people in New Orleans.

.

During Obamas presidency, this type of failure to respond to a natural disaster has never happened. The aftermath of the Louisiana flooding is no exception.

.

As Stephanie Grace of The Advocate (Louisianas largest daily newspaper) wrote last Friday:

.

[Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards] and his allies stressed Thursday that theyve been in daily communication with White House officials. FEMA administrator Craig Fugate, an emergency response specialist who before joining the Obama administration oversaw Floridas disaster responses, has been here. So has Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson. President Barack Obama started issuing disaster declarations quickly, which frees up federal resources and gets the ball rolling on longer term needs. Inspectors are on the ground. Its a miserable time for the many thousands affected, but a faulty response isnt making it more miserable.

.

In short, as far as the federal government goes, Grace added, this is not Katrina.

.

Republicans can continue to accuse President Obama of a failed response, but they do so without facts on their side.

US Election: Nobody is Talking about Climate Change

People are afraid that doing something about global warming
will make them poorer

You would never guess it from the US election. But for the third year running the world is on course to exceed a record temperature in 2016 having suffered the hottest July in history last month. People are right to worry their children may not have it as good as they did. Yet the changing planet plays little role in their foreboding. By any barometer, US politics has hit extreme weather in 2016, yet global warming ranks near the bottom on the list of voter concerns. Illegal immigration, on the other hand, is near the top, even though net inflows came to a halt five years ago. Is democracy on course to duck the biggest challenge of our age?

.

snip

.

If you pause to think about it, the answer is obvious. Global warming is no longer just a documentary film by Al Gore. It is affecting our daily lives in a growing number of ways. Last month, Americas east coast suffered from an unusually long heat dome summer temperatures so high the authorities in New York, Washington and elsewhere urged people to keep their children inside and stay well hydrated.

.

snip

.

Climate alarm is no longer a monopoly of environmentalists. Earlier this month, Zillow, an online property site, forecast that one in eight homes in Florida would be underwater by the end of the century. You might want to think twice about buying that beachfront home in Miami. The big reinsurance companies last month called on Washington to take urgent steps to stop catastrophe, which threatens to make nonsense of their risk models.

.

snip

.

There are two big obstacles. The first is that voters increasingly distrust experts nowadays.

.

snip

.

Second, people are afraid that doing something about global warming will make them poorer. Terms such as carbon tax imply a higher cost of living.

Climate Change Pledges Not Nearly Enough to Save Tropical Ecosystems

Sunday, 28 August 2016

By Jeremy Hance, Mongabay

Truth Out

change-pledges-not-nearly-enough-to-save-tropical-ecosystems

.

.

The Paris Agreement marked the biggest political milestone to combat climate change since scientists first introduced us in the late 1980s to perhaps humanity's greatest existential crisis.

.

Last December, 178 nations pledged to do their part to keep global average temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) over preindustrial levels -- adding on an even more challenging, but aspirational goal of holding temperatures at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit).

.

To this end, each nation produced a pledge to cut it's own carbon emissions, targeting everything from the burning of fossil fuels to deforestation to agriculture.

.

It seems like a Herculean task, bound, the optimistic say, to bring positive results.

.

Yet, less than eight months later, a study in the journal Nature finds that those pledges are nowhere near as ambitious as they need to be to keep temperatures below 2 degrees Celsius, let alone 1.5 degrees. And in August, British scientists reported that this year's record El Ni has already pushed us perilously close to the 1.5 degree milestone.

.

Meanwhile, temperatures are not rising evenly around the planet, with the Arctic warming far faster than the tropics. That fact originally caused scientists to hypothesize that polar ecosystems would suffer more dire climate change impacts ahead of tropical habitats.

.

But over recent years, researchers began seeing that some tropical ecosystems are being decimated by climate change far faster than expected -- think coral reefs -- while many more habitats may be weakened over time -- think mangroves, cloud forests and rainforests -- if global human effort and political willpower don't surge quickly.

.

Toward a Hotter World

.

Study leader, Joeri Rogelj, told Mongabay that he wasn't surprised by his findings showing that current national carbon reduction pledges would blast past the 2 degree target, leading to global warming of between 2.6 degrees Celsius and 3.1 degrees Celsius.

.

"The pledges currently on the table are a first step in a continuous process of pledging, reviewing, and taking stock to what they add up," said Rogelj, a Research Scholar at the Energy Program of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). "This process has been defined by the Paris Agreement, and nations are thus expected to review and adjust their pledges in light of the best science over the coming years."

.

The Paris Agreement was structured from the bottom up, whereby national pledges would be reviewed every 5 years (beginning in 2020) in order to make sure that carbon cut targets are boosted as time goes by.

Climate change and the spread of invasive ragweed are set to double the number of seasonal allergy sufferers across Europe, with similar impacts likely in North America, researchers say.

.

By mid-century, some 77 million people in Europe will be hit by hay fever misery, up from 33 million today, they reported in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

.

Ragweed pollen allergy is likely to become a major health problem across much of Europe, said lead author Iain Lake, a researcher at the University of East Anglia in England.

.

Not only will more people be laid low by allergic asthma, itching and swollen eyes, the severity of the symptoms is likely to increase, the study concluded.

.

This greater impact will stem from higher concentrations of ragweed, and a pollen season extending into September and October across most of the continent.

.

Countries less affected todayFrance, Germany and Poland, for examplewill probably be hit hardest over the coming decades.

.

The main culprit is climate change, but the continuing spread of the invasive species Ambrosia artemisiifoliacommonly known as ragweedis also a key driver.

.

A single ragweed plant can produce about a billion grains of pollen per year, mostly in August.

GMO Maize Triggers Tumors in Rats: New Email Leak
Shows How Monsanto Stifles Criticism

The Seralini debacle is a perfect case study of how industry conspires with cooperative scientists to help bury information that is harmful to its commercial interests.

.

Monsanto is one of the most hated companies on the planet. Unless you ask FORTUNE Magazine, that is. In that case, its apparently one of the worlds most admired companies. But if you actually ask real human beings then it ranks right behind BP and Bank of America as the third most hated company in the world.

.

Strange, then, that Monsantos reputation in the scientific literature is so squeaky clean. Apparently its just a bunch of science-hating neanderthals who dislike Monsantos products and all of those squeaky clean couldnt-tell-a-lie, couldnt-hurt-a-fly scientists know better.

.

Of course, as readers of this column will know, this seeming conundrum isnt so strange after all. Scientists arent angels and the things they study (as well as the results they get) are all too often influenced by whos paying for their research. And in the case of the peer-reviewed GMO safety literature, it isnt hard to tie a lot of it back to the biotech companies themselves, Monsanto foremost among them.

.

If any more proof of this insidious influence were needed, it just arrived. A set of emails obtained under a freedom of information request has exposed the types of tricks that Monsanto does to keep problematic studies out of the literature.

.

First, some background. If you havent seen it already (or even if you have) go back and re-watch or re-read my (award-winning) 2013 report on the Seralini Roundup toxicity study, Genetic Fallacy: How Monsanto Silences Dissent and last years follow-up, Study Linking GMOs and Tumors Vindicated Yet AgainMSM Stays Silent.

.

Long story short: French biologist Dr. Gilles-ic Salini published a feeding study in which rats were fed various levels of Monsantos GM maize NK603 and the Roundup herbicide it is grown with. The results were shocking: despite having been cleared by an earlier (industry sponsored) study, Seralinis study found liver congestions, necrosis, tumors and early death in rats fed Roundup or GMO corn, separately or combined.

.

As soon as Seralinis results were announced the biotech industry and their lapdogs in the white lab coats began falling all over themselves, frothing at the mouth, and denouncing the study to anyone and everyone who would listen.

.

They used the wrong kind of rats! they complained.

.

And they didnt use enough rats! they added. Andanduh, the statistical analysis was inadequate!

.

As independent researchers like F. William Engdahl pointed out at the time, these criticisms were invalid because all GMO toxicity studies use the exact same type and number of rats as the Seralini study did. But such quibbles were lost amongst the din and bray of the chattering spokesman for the biotech industry, and eventually enough smoke was generated to allow the journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology (FCT) which published the study to retract it.

Criticism of ESPN FROM Wikipedia

Despite its acclaim and notability, ESPN and its sister networks have been the targets of criticism for some of its programming, including accusations of biased coverage, conflict of interest and controversies with individual broadcasters and analysts. Mike Freeman's 2000 book ESPN: The Uncensored History, which alleged sexual harassment, drug use and gambling, was the first critical study of ESPN.

"God what courage. Lying under a train that might collapse on them at any minute and trusting their fellows to do the right thing and keep them safe. That's the brotherhood. Do you know if they managed to re-attach her foot? With all the other injuries they may have simply had to amputate it above the crush line since her other bone fractures, (not to mention internal injuries), were life-threatening and eliminating the massive blood loss from the ankle could be what made the difference as to whether she survived.?"

A new poll from Monmouth University includes a bit of data that will quickly be embraced by supporters of Hillary Clinton. It has been 440 days since Donald Trump has failed to release his tax returns but 6 in 10 likely voters say that it's very or somewhat important for a candidate to do so. Public pressure! Can Trump survive the weight of public opinion? Etc.!

OFF BRAND: Ian Hawes is collecting money in the name of DONALD TRUMP. Just one problem: He has no affiliation with the Republicans presidential campaign.

.

POLITICOs Shane Goldmacher reports: At a glance, the two websites look virtually indistinguishable. Both feature a photo of Donald Trump, in a suit and red tie, in front of a giant American flag. Both seemingly offer a chance for two to win dinner with Donald Trump.

.

One is at donaldjtrump.com; the other is at dinnerwithtrump.org. The first belongs to Trumps campaign. The second is a scheme run by Ian Hawes, a 25-year-old Maryland man who has no affiliation with Trump or his campaign and who has preyed on more than 20,000 unsuspecting donors, collecting more than $1 million in the process.

4) MENTAL HEALTH: HILLARY CLINTON released a sweeping mental health plan on Monday, POLITICOs Nick Gass reports. It includes a call to convene a White House conference on the issue during her first year in office. Recognizing that nearly a fifth of all adults in the United States more than 40 million people are coping with a mental health problem, Hillarys plan will integrate our mental and physical health care systems, the Democratic nominee's campaign said in a statement. Her goal is that within her time in office, Americans will no longer separate mental health from physical health when it comes to access to care or quality of treatment. http://politi.co/2bx4MUf

.

In just its first three weeks of operation, Hawes PAC spent more than $108,000 on Facebook ads, offering an opportunity to win Dinner with Donald Trump and netted itself nearly $350,000 in donations, according to federal records.

.

The biggest chunk of the money raised $133,000 went to a company that Hawes founded and owns, CartSoft LLC. The purpose of the payments is described on federal records as media and media purchasing, though CartSofts website describes itself as an online payment-processing platform.

.

Since its launch, the PAC has collected more than $1 million, Hawes told POLITICO. It has reportedly spent $0 on behalf of Trump.
I feel ripped off and taken advantage of. This is horrible. That was not my intent, said Mary Pat Kulina, who owns a paper-shredding company in Maryland and gave $265 to Hawes group. Kulina thought she had given to Trumps campaign until told otherwise by POLITICO. This is robbery, she said. I want my money back and I want them to add up what they stole from people and give it to Donald Trump.

So what of Trumps claim that he is healthier?

.

snip

.

If both candidates have completed all their required health screening (a leap with Trumps letter as the specifics are spelled out in Clintons and not in his) and are non-smokers, then cancer-wise they are on a relatively even playing field. However, they are not when it comes to their risk of heart attack. Trumps doctor doesnt provide quite enough information (on purpose or just a rushed omission we may never know) for comparison, but we can make an educated guess.

.

To compare the two candidates and their risk for heart attack, I plugged their information into a risk calculator provided by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. We need age, gender, systolic blood pressure, smoking status, if they are taking a medication for blood pressure, as well as total and HDL cholesterol. Trumps letter does not include cholesterol levels. For Trump, I did the calculations using the same cholesterol and HDL as Clinton as well a second calculation using significantly better values than Mrs. Clinton just in case his levels are better. As Trump is on a statin (a cholesterol medication) and professes his love for Kentucky Fried chicken, a significantly better cholesterol than Clinton is probably less likely. If he released this information we could, of course, better compare the two for heart attack risk.

Study: Removing Athletes from Play Improves Post-Concussion Recovery

Researchers at UPMC and three universities have found that young athletes who continued to play a sport immediately after a concussion took twice as much time to recover and experienced worse and more symptoms than athletes who were removed from that activity. Their study, Removal From Play After Concussion and Recovery Time, was published online and is included in the September issue of the journal Pediatrics.

.

Scientists have long accepted the notion that athletes should be removed from play after concussions. This study fortifies that viewpoint, and researchers hope it will persuade athletes to sit on the sidelines after a concussion.

.

I am very confident in these results, said Elbin, the lead researcher on the study, who is now on the faculty of the University of Arkansas.

.

While a study published in April used medical records to study the effect of delayed reporting and removal from activity on concussion recovery, this is the first study to use clinical data to study that issue. The study also supports removal from play status as a predictor of protracted recoveries ones that take at least 21 days. That variable whether an athlete was removed from play was a stronger predictor of such lengthy recoveries than previously known factors such as sex and age, according to the research.

.

Being or not being removed from play carried a lot more variance than any of those other variables, said Michael Micky Collins, director of the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program and a member of the research team.

.

Athletes wouldnt run a marathon on a sprained ankle or throw a football with a broken arm, yet they often downplay concussion symptoms to return to competition. In the heat of a game they might not even recognize the injury, so its important that clinicians be on hand to identify the symptoms and remove players, Collins said.

.

The study was based on an analysis of two groups of athletes age 12-19 who were treated at UPMCs concussion clinic. One cohort of 35 players was removed from a sport after a concussion, while the remaining athletes continued to play for an average of about 19 minutes. The cohorts represented contact and non-contact sports, including football, soccer, ice hockey and volleyball.

.

The researchers compared players baseline and post-concussion neurocognitive scores, which were measured with the UPMC-designed ImPACT tool. Collins and fellow researcher Philip Schatz of Saint Josephs University in Philadelphia are a shareholder of and consultant for ImPACT, respectively.

.

The athletes were evaluated at two clinical visits, one that took place within a week of the injury and another 8-30 days after it.

.

On average, the recovery time among athletes who continued to play after a concussion was twice as long (44 days) as those of athletes who were removed from activity (22 days). During recovery, the cohort that was not removed from play exhibited worse symptoms, such as poorer visual and verbal memory, and more of them. And they were 8.8 times more likely to have a recovery of at least three weeks.

Removal From Play After Concussion and Recovery Time

R.J. Elbin, Alicia Sufrinko, Philip Schatz, Jon French, Luke Henry, Scott Burkhart, Michael W. Collins, Anthony P. Kontos

Pediatrics

August 2016

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Despite increases in education and awareness, many athletes continue to play with signs and symptoms of a sport-related concussion (SRC). The impact that continuing to play has on recovery is unknown. This study compared recovery time and related outcomes between athletes who were immediately removed from play and athletes who continued to play with an SRC.

.

snip

.

CONCLUSIONS: SRC recovery time may be reduced if athletes are removed from participation. Immediate removal from play is the first step in mitigating prolonged SRC recovery, and these data support current consensus statements and management guidelines.

Playing With a Concussion Doubles Recovery Time

The findings may help doctors promote the message that taking immediate precautions after concussion will actually allow the athlete more opportunities to keep playing, not fewer. Resting immediately in the 24 to 48 hours following a concussion (and then slowly returning to normal activities under the supervision of a physician) reduces the possibility of further stress on the system and allows brain cells to heal faster so that athletes can get back to their sport more quickly. Its something that we consistently preach to coaches, parents and kids, said R.J. Elbin, who led the study while at the University of Pittsburgh but who now is director of the Office for Sport Concussion Research at the University of Arkansas. However, until now, there really has not been any data that supports this idea.

.

Estimates show that each year in the United States, there are up to 3.8 million sports-related concussions, which can happen when there is a blow or jolt to the head that causes the brain to bounce within the skull, stretching and damaging brain cells. Symptoms of concussion may include dizziness, confusion, nausea and sensitivity to light.

.

Young athletes are particularly prone to prolonged recovery and complications from concussion. The developing brain has been shown to be more vulnerable to the physiological effects of the injury, said Tad Seifert, a neurologist and director of the Sports Concussion Program for Norton Healthcare, in Louisville, Ky.

.

Despite increased awareness of the dangers of concussions and efforts to educate those in the sports community on how to recognize and treat the head injury, an estimated 50 to 70 percent of concussions go unreported. While some athletes and coaches may not always recognize the signs of concussion, the larger concern is a sports mind-set that frowns on leaving the game.

.

The idea of being a football player is that were tough. We get back up. We dont cry. We dont make a big deal out of it, Mr. Dicks said. There is the idea that you must sacrifice your body and your brain for the overall greater good of the team.

Donald Trump is Touchy, Touchy, Touchy about His Net Worth-
and not Going to Show His Taxes

Like most bullies, Donald Trump loves to dish out the hateand the little, loony, crooked, lying nicknames. Hes also pretty keen on the sarcasm when it comes to inviting another nation to mangle our election or calling President Obama the founder of ISIS. Also, like most bullies, Trump cant take even the slightest sign of slight pointed in his direction without boiling into furious response.

.

But theres one spot on Trumps orange hide thats so amazingly sensitive, even not touching it can elicit yelps. As in this interview between Trump and the business team at the Washington Post.

.

Robert OHarrow: Im going to put it to you directly. You are not transparent on your finances. How do you account for that? What do you expect people to do about your lack of transparency?

.

Hang on there, Donny. OHarrow probably just meant that you wouldnt show your taxes or your financial statements which could mean youre hiding any number of things. Like Russian connections. Or paying no taxes. Or, yeah, that youre worth less than a bucket of warm spit.

But its fun that Trump went right to that spot.

The whole conversationwhich quickly turns to wrestling with why Trump wont release his taxesis worth reading through, because its just wonderfully bizarre, and absolutely Trumpian in its twists, turns, and head-scratching self-referential density.

Like the part about how Donald Trump did his father a favor by borrowing $10 million from him.

The first commercial flight from the U.S. to Cuba in more than half a century landed in the Cuban city of Santa Clara, marking another milestone in the thawing relationship between the two countries.

.

The inaugural trip was a JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., that took off Wednesday morning bound for Abel Santamaria International Airport in central Cuba. And as NPR's Scott Horsley tells our Newscast unit, two Cuban-American pilots were at the controls.

.

"JetBlue Captain Mark Luaces and First Officer Francisco Barreras are both the sons of Cuban immigrants," Scott says.

.

And as The Associated Press reports, "Cheers broke out in the cabin of JetBlue flight 387 as the plane touched down. Passengers mostly airline executives, U.S. government officials and journalists, with a sprinkling of Cuban-American families and U.S. travelers were given gift bags with Cuban cookbooks, commemorative luggage tags and Cuban flags, which they were encouraged to wave for the TV cameras at the tarmac."

.

It's the first such trip since the height of the Cold War. Previously, most Americans flying to Cuba would either take charter flights or travel through a third country.

.

Meanwhile, other airlines are making plans to expand their service to the island nation. As Scott reported, "American Airlines launches regular service from Miami next week. And half a dozen other U.S. carriers are expected to follow, offering a total of 20 flights each day."
