A backpacker has revealed she managed to escape by sending Facebook messages after being kidnapped

by a farmer and raped in a pigsty.  Davine Arckens, 24, was chained and assaulted over two days

after being abducted by twisted hobby farmer Gene Charles Bristow in South Australia.

And the ingenious young woman only escaped after managing to send panicked Facebook messages

to friends to ask for help — even using metal hooks she had found in a broken-down fridge to unhook

her chains.  Speaking to Australian current affairs program “60 Minutes,” Arckens revealed how the

nightmare unfolded when she replied to an ad on Gumtree — a UK online classified ad website —

for farm work during her travels in February 2017.  She was then lured to Bristow’s 2.5-acre property

in Meningie, about 87 miles southeast of Adelaide.  Picking the young woman up from a bus stop,

he took her on a disorienting road trip before pulling into an old pig shed near his home.

A backpacker has told how she sent desperate pleas for help over Facebook after being chained up and sexually abused by a

farmer in Australia.  Davine Arckens, from Belgium, waived her right to anonymity to describe her two-day ordeal in

February 2017 after Gene Charles Bristow was convicted of her kidnap and rape.  The 24-year-old told 60 Minutes Australia

she was lured to a pig shed in Meningie, South Australia, after she placed an advert on the Gumtree website in a bid to find

work.  After Bristow demanded to check her body for needle marks to ensure she was not a drug user, Ms Arckens said he

lunged on her, pulled her arms  behind her back and threatened to shoot her if she did not do what he said.  She said Bristow,

54, used cable ties then chains to bind her wrists and shackle both her legs, then stripped her naked and sexually abused her.
"I was just stuck there and I thought it would take a while for people to notice I was gone or even to find me," she told 60 Minutes.

"I was like: 'I'm not getting out of here. This is it. This is where I'm going to die.'"

Backpacker Survived Two-Day Rape Ordeal In Kidnapper’s Pig Shed, Rescuing Herself With The Help Of Facebook

Davine, 24, was lured to Gene Bristow's hobby farm with the false promise of a job, then he shackled and assaulted her for days.

Gene Bristow, a 54-year-old pig farmer, put an ad out offering a job rearing calves under a fake name, she said.

“He was talking a lot, giving a lot of information about the work, about why he wanted a female to work there,”

Davine, then 24, recalled in the interview. “When I think about it now, he just kept playing that part

till the very last moment.”  In fact, there was no job. After Bristow picked her up at a bus station, he drove her to his pig shed

where she says he grabbed her, pulled out a gun (which turned out to be a replica) and threatened her life before shackling her

and raping her repeatedly over two days. As this was going on, Bristow’s wife and son were in a house nearby.

A backpacker who was chained up in a pig shed by the Gumtree rapist has spoken
for the first time and revealed how she escaped her attacker.    Davine, 24, from Belgium
posted a Gumtree advertisement seeking short-term work in Australia.  She was offered
employment on a remote pig farm in Meningie, 150km southeast of Adelaide, in
February 2017 but when she arrived her nightmare began.  Gene Charles Bristow, 54,
kidnapped her after pressing what turned out to be a fake gun against her back.

'He was telling me to stop moving and stay still but I wouldn't let him. I was struggling
and he put something against my back,' she told 60 Minutes

Davine, breaking her silence for the first time since the ordeal, revealed how she outsmarted
the hobby farmer to alert authorities and save her life.   She said she used discarded hooks in
the pig shed where she was being held captive to break free from the chains.

Bristow took her phone but left her luggage holding her laptop in the shed with her.
She freed herself from the chains and managed to send distress signals to family and friends,
as well as South Australia police.  Davine didn't know her exact location but was able to tell
police she was picked up by a man in a red ute at Murray Bridge.   From there, police were
able to track her location.

A South Australian man who kidnapped and raped a European backpacker in a pig shed on his regional property
has been jailed for 18 years.  Gene Charles Bristow held the 24-year-old woman for two days after he answered
a Gumtree advertisement she posted in search of farm work in 2017.  The 54-year-old showed no emotion as
District Court judge Geraldine Davison handed him the sentence and set a non-parole period of 12 years,
six months on Tuesday.  She said Bristow lied to the woman to lure her to the farm at Meningie, 150km southeast
of Adelaide, then chained her hands and legs "in what must have been a terrifying experience for her".

"You took her mobile phone and disposed of it, and left her alone in that shed in the middle of nowhere," she said.

"You raped her on a number of occasions."  While she was in the shed, Bristow threatened to shoot her and told her
fake stories about police corruption and his involvement in a kidnapping ring.  "It is impossible to understand how
alone and devastated she must have felt as you humiliated and degraded her in a foreign country," Judge Davison said.

Backpacker rapist Gene Charles Bristow, who kept kidnap victim in pig shed, jailed

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-05-14/pig-shed-rapist-gene-charles-bristow-sentenced-to-jail/11064658

A South Australian hobby farmer will spend at least 12-and-a-half years behind bars for holding a European
backpacker captive in his pig shed and raping her.

Key points:

  • Gene Charles Bristow lured his victim by responding to an ad on Gumtree
  • The 24-year-old feared being shot if she tried to leave
  • Bristow kept the backpacker's presence hidden from his wife and son

District Court Judge Geraldine Davison on Tuesday sentenced Gene Charles Bristow, 54, to 18 years in jail with
a non-parole period of 12 years and six months for his crimes.

In March a jury took three hours to find Bristow guilty of aggravated kidnapping, rape and indecent assault.

The court previously heard he held the 24-year-old female backpacker captive in a dirty old pig shed on his farm
at Meningie, about 140 kilometres south-east of Adelaide, for two days in February 2017.

The ABC has been granted access to photos which show inside the pig shed where a South Australian hobby farmer
held a European backpacker captive for two days in 2017.

Key points:

  • Gene Charles Bristow was found guilty of kidnapping and rape of backpacker
  • He restrained the woman with cable ties and shackles in a pig shed on his farm
  • Pictures of the crime scene have been revealed for the first time

A District Court jury deliberated for three hours on Monday before finding
Gene Charles Bristow guilty of aggravated kidnapping, rape, attempted rape and indecent assault.

The 54-year-old showed no emotion as the jury foreperson repeatedly said "guilty" in response to all six charges.

The court heard when Bristow hatched his plan to lure a young female backpacker to his 40-hectare property
at Meningie, he was unemployed, the farm was not profitable and money was tight.

He lived on the farm with his wife of 25 years, his adult son and his son's partner.

Unbeknown to them, the court heard that in the days leading up to the kidnapping, Bristow conducted internet
searches for shackles, handcuffs, tasers and Rohypnol — more commonly known as the "date rape drug".

Guardian

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/may/05/uk-backpacker-speaks-of-her-and-kidnap-ordeal-in-australia

A British backpacker who was kidnapped and raped by a man in Australia has spoken of her terrifying ordeal,
which lasted more than a month.  Elisha Greer, 24, from Liverpool, was held captive for weeks by Marcus Martin,
who she said beat her and held a gun to her head. She required hospital treatment for injuries including
facial fractures after eventually being found by police near Mitchell, Queensland, in March 2017.

In an interview with Australian broadcaster Channel 7, Greer said she had met Martin at a party in Cairns,
Queensland, on 26 January that year. “He just seemed like a nice guy,” she told a reporter for the Sunday
Night programme.  After the pair exchanged numbers, Martin moved into Greer’s hotel and began asking her
for money.

Greer, then aged 21, said Martin obtained a gun for “protection” and took her along with him to rob a drug dealer.
“I was forced to drive the car with the gun to my head,” she said.  Later, a drugged Martin launched a violent attack on
Greer, hitting, raping and choking her until she passed out. “He turned around and he just started to hit me, hit me,
hit me,” she said.  Despite apologising after each assault, Martin’s controlling behaviour did not stop.

Greer said he threw away her birth control pills “to try and get me pregnant”. She added: “Maybe he thought that he

could control me more if I was with his child.”

An Australian man has been jailed for 10 years after kidnapping and raping a British backpacker in a month-long ordeal.

Marcus Allyn Keith Martin, 25, held Elisha Greer, then 22, hostage during a 1,600km road trip through the Australian outback in 2017 –
during which he repeatedly raped her and held a gun to her head.

Ms Greer, from Liverpool, England, was rescued after police pulled over their 4x4 car, four weeks after she was kidnapped.

Martin pleaded guilty to charges of rape and deprivation of liberty and was sentenced to ten years in prison on Tuesday
at Cairns District Court in northern Queensland.

Judge Dean Morzone said Martin would be required to serve at least 80% of his sentence,
the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported.

The court heard that the pair had met at a party in Queensland in January 2017, after which they began a brief relationship.

Ms Greer and Martin embarked on a road trip together, but he soon turned violent. He then held her against her will
and sexually assaulted her, according to police.
