#12's stack. #12's

If I'm not mistaken #12's stack was shortened back in the late '60s by 6 inches to accommodate the balloon stack abomination. Can anyone confirm this? Is it also true that Bachmann took their measurements for the G-scale 10-wheelers from #12? If so, is the stack on the 10-wheelers also shorter than it should be by a scale 6 inches?

Philip,

Most people think that #12's original stack was covered up by the
diamond stack that was on it for most of the 1960's and early 70's.
But #12's crown stack was removed and the diamond stack was put in its
place. #12's stack was shortened when it was put back in place in the
70's. Bachmann did measure #12 as she is now, when they were making
the models.

Thanks Tim.

If the original stack wasn't covered up by the diamond stack, then why did
they shorten the original stack when they put it back on? Was 6" the actual
amount it was shortened?

I cant say for sure why they shortened the stack, it was done when
the stack was put back on 12 in the mid 70's. As for how much it was
shortened, i really dont know. I have never took the time to measure
the length of 12's stack. Being that it is running this week, ill
measure it wednesday if i can remember it. But as for the reason for
the shortened stack there is only one reason that comes to mind.
Until the sheds were built at Tweetsie in the 1980's both 12 and 190
were tarped in the winter. By making the stack height similar to the
heights of the domes and cab, would make it easier to cover the
engine.
