Modified Library web page
Bob Webber <rswebber@...>
I have modified the Slimrails Library web page to reflect the homes of the
new lists: http://www.concentric.net/~Rswebber/library.shtml (note that you DO need the .shtml at the end) From this page, you will be able to subscribe to any of these three lists (by following the links); search the archives for any of the three lists (again, by following the links); or send mail to the lists (again, by following the links). I just hope we won't have any more of those bounces from the old lists! Bob

Well, I finally updated our web page. It looks better... it loads faster
... click on the small picture and see the larger one (that takes a little longer). The picts aren't quite as good as before -- to make it fast, you sacrifice some quality. Sorry there is no new ET&WNC stuff on there - we are trying to build our layout for the 2000 St. Louis National Narrow Gauge Meet ( or the Colorado Narrow Gauge Meet -- if you know what I mean). Well, our layout will be ET and EBT and Pennsy and ?? Clinchfield. Any donations of Clinchfield Challengers are readily accepted. We will have a bit of Cotton Belt... how did that get into Tennessee.... well, in reality, you recognize that the UP IS everywhere -- not just West. Anyway, we hope to do Linville Depot in 1999. www.tiac.com/users/lwalker (that's L Walker) /wcm/wcm.html Don't fuss about the name, it's free to me... New List Member
baskette@...
List Members,
Hello, my name is MIchael Baskette. I'm a model railroader in Lexington, KY and a former a native of Johnson City Tennessee. I saw you had created this list on the Slim Rails Web site, and figured I'd join in. I am primarily a Clinchfield modeler, but am currently planning a large switching layout of Johnson City set in the mid to late 1960's. Included will be the E.T. & W.N.C. from J.C. to Elizabethton. I figure this location and era gives my a unique opportunity to run second generation EMD power on the CRR and Southern portions and steam on the E.T.& W.N.C. up to 1968 and Alco's after that. Anyway, as you can gather, my primary interests in the Tweetsie are it's standard gauge years. Hope that's not taboo. So far I have aquired photos of all the standard guage locos operated in the 1960's steam and diesel, and USGS topo maps of JC and Eliz. I figured this group might have insight into other questions. Recently aquired and possibly of interst to some of you is a large number of CRR waybills for freight traffic originating or terminating in Johnson City. Many are for cars delivered to or loaded in Elizabethton and interchanged to/from the ET&WNC. They list the industries who either loaded or recieved the cars. Again these are for the 1960's so may be of limited appeal. Anyway, hope to get to know you soon. Mike Baskette

Hey, the standard gage days of the ET&WNC are very interesting. I am
modeling the Alco RS3 diesel in largescale. Have been trying to get pictures. Have some after the engines were out of service but would love to get a couple when they were still in service. Can be sent to Karl Kleeman, 619 Yarmouth Rd., Raleigh, NC 27607. I will pay all expenses. Karl Kleeman I am also interested in what types of cars the RS3s pulled. Would like to be historically accurate if possible. kleenc@compuserve.com

RS3s and more
baskette@...
Karl and all,
My source for photos of standard gauge ET&WNC equipment if from Ken Marsh of Kingsport, TN. (PO BOX 3712, Kingsport,Tn, 37664). Ken has Photos of most standard gauge steam and diesel power. From him I recently got #207, 208, 209, 210 and 211. He has #212, 204, 205, and 206 as well. All are 8X10 Black and White and are available for $3.50 each with a 4 print minimum order. His photos of the RS3's were taken between their arrival in 1968 and 1970 and they both were in Southern Railway colors. (i.e. Black with an Imitation Aluminum stripe with gold pinstripe and lettering in Southern style.) I have heard people wrongly assumed ET&WNC became a Southern subsidiary, but these are just the colors they arrived in as they were ex-CofG / ex- Southern. The abandoned #210 that so many of us have photographed was painted in the orange and black scheme in the early 1970's. I have a color scan of an operational #210 in orange and black and #209 in Southern colors as well, but must get permission to post it to the list from the owner. Does anyone know if #209 was also painted in this scheme? I can't tell from Chris Ford's distant shot on the Slim Rails Web page. The orange and black just happen to be the school colors of the Elizabethton High School Cyclones, I doubt this is a coincidence. Oh yes, the new RS3 book shows an operational ET&WNC #210 in orange and black. The later ex-SP RS32s were also painted in a variation of this orange and black scheme. Ken's 1980 photo of #211 shows a black locomotive with orange stripe and bibs on each end unlike the RS3s which only had the bib on the long hood end. The letter type on the roadname is also no longer of Southern influence being more block in style. Ken stated 212 also carried this scheme, but he didn't get it photographed until it was relettered "ET" As for what equipment these loco's pulled, basically anything. My Clinchfield waybills show Clinchfield Covered hoppers being loaded in Elizabethton, and Clinchfield box cars going to Tri-State Container (Now Inland Container). I have no waybills for NARC or Bemberg, but I know they recieved coal and chemical tank cars. I have seen photos of ET&WNC equipment pulling Clinchfield hoppers as well as Southern equipment . I think some of my waybills show C&O and L&N hoppers finding their way to Elizabethton as well. I'm sure Tri-State recieved box cars from just about any road imaginable in the 1960's Hope this helps, but I think you have a lot of room here. Have Fun Mike Basktte

There is a video source for standard gauge steam on the ET&WNC. It is Steam Shortlines Southern Style, available from A&R Productions. it has about 15 minutes of ET in the 60s. It shows the Johnson City yards and Bemberg well. Their Number is 800 246 5898. We(the ET&WNC RR Historical Society) worked with them to produce a narrow gauge video set 4 years ago.(Has it been that long?) Time does fly. Johnny Graybeal President, ET&WNC RR Historical Society

Passenger trucks borrowed by FEBT

edition of the Timber Transfer, the publication of the Friends of the East Broad Top. My editing emphasises the reference to Tweetsie.... December 1998 Work Continues on Restoration Projects Combine No. 16 Dave Bucher, coordinator of the work on the reproduction trucks for Combine No. 16, reports that delivery of the fabricated journal boxes has been delayed until after the New Year. Trail Tool - the contractor responsible for this work informed Dave that work on the journal boxes has slowed due to vacations and the holidays. Once work on the journal boxes is finished, FEBT will have acquired all major components of the reproduction truck frames. Dave is now obtaining up-to-date quotations for the cost of assembling the reproduction truck frames. (The original truck frame leased from the Tweetsie Railroad and used as a template for the Combine No. 16 truck project must also be reassembled so that the leased trucks can be returned to North Carolina.) Once again, the funds available in 1999 (and future years) from donations to the FEBT Restoration Fund will determine the pace of work on the reproduction truck frames as well as on Combine No. 16 itself. Combine No. 16 is stored at Allaire State Park, by arrangement with the New Jersey Museum of Transportation. Speaking of things "borrowed" from Tweetsie, is there a listing somewhere
of other ETWNC rolling stock in various places around the country? NJ and NC have boxcars, there are tank bodies in NC and Alaska, as well as coboose 505 in an undisclosed location. Others??mw

The attached B&W jpg photo shows the letter box built into the sides of
combine 15. I assume it was so folks could drop their mail in like we would at the Post Office today (DUH!) Was this common on an RPO? I always assumed an RPO received it's mail in bags from the PO, not individual letters. Was this another example of Tweetsie's down-home service? -- Jerry A. The "eastern model RR manufacturer" is me. Fred asked me about the car and I asked for some marketing info. He's posting this note to the HOn3, EBT and one other list. Although I'm now primarily in On3, I'll still make HOn3 cars if there is interest. I've been told a market still exists for a series of urethane boxcars to compliment Dave Hoffman's wood/brass kits of a few years ago. BTW, the On3 37' ET flat should start shipping later this month. I'll only make about 100 kits for the first batch and many are already reserved. Pass the word to get them while still available. Thanks for watching the lists for us all!
