swallows....way up high up in the sky

Yesterday afternoon around 6 while trying to locate Mercury with my
telescope I was surprised to see swallows flying by, so far away that they
were barely larger than Venus. This was at 50x - they were not even
visible in my 10x40 binoculars. I could not identify them to species, but
if I had to guess, I'd say Cliff. They were circling a bit and seemed to
be drifting off to the south. Could there have been an insect swarm up
there? My guess is something on the order of two thousand feet high and a
mile away.
