Mount Diablo Audubon Society's outing to East Contra Costa County

Paul Schorr

Today the Mount Diablo Audubon Society conducted its annual spring outing to East Contra Costa County. Sixty species were seen or heard by the eleven birders. Highlights included the following sightings:

Blue Grosbeak (Marsh Creek Trail off of Cypress Avenue in Oakley and along Jersey Island Road)
Black-chinned Hummingbird (willow bushes near the green gate near the end of Bethel Island Road)
Swainson's Hawk (Marsh Creek Trail and Jersey Island Road)
Burrowing Owl (Knightsen)
Yellow-billed Magpie (Knightsen School)

During lunch at the picnic area at Knightsen School, we watched a Yellow-billed Magpie feed and tend a fledging that had gotten into the adjacent kindergarten playground. At one point the fledging hopped its way up the stairs of the slide, but apparently decided not to make the trip down the slide.

Good birding,
