Bar-tailed Godwits

In October 2019 there was a Bar-tailed Godwit AND a Hudsonian Godwit in the same flock of Marbled Godwits for a bit of time at a beach near Half Moon Bay. I happened to be working for San Mateo County Parks at the time and they were at a beach that was one of our properties, so I stopped by and was lucky enough to see them both! One was reported at the Emeryville Marina on Halloween 2019 and
graciously hung around in the rip rap just off the path, providing
great looks and plenty of time to study and make comparisons well
into November to whomever went to look. There was usually a small
knot of admirers, so one didn't even have to spend time trying to
pick it out. I don't remember who told us of having handled one just before
the migration, but the description was that it was so fat that it
felt like a water balloon filled with Jello-O. William Hudson

Since they migrate from Alaska to New Zealand, I wondered if they are ever seen in the Bay Area. I see Marbled Godwits frequently, especially this time of year and would not have identified a Bar-tailed Godwits mixed in with them. Marbled Godwit from Pt Isabel yesterday. https://flic.kr/p/2nP1swZ |
