Probable Erythrismatic Western Sandpiper, Arrowhead Marsh, 4/25

Steven Hunter

Near dusk last Saturday, Viviana and I found an apparent Western Sandpiper, associating with a large flock of other WESA, foraging on the mud flats of an intermediate low tide, at the end of the boardwalk at Arrowhead. This bird was almost entirely rufous, including its underparts. The studied opinion so far is that of an erythrismatic WESA. You can see three pictures of the bird on this checklist: eBird Checklist - 25 Apr 2020 - MLK Jr. Regional Shoreline--Arrowhead Marsh - 31 species (+2 other taxa)

Thanks to Eddie Bartley, Bob Lewis, and Peter Pyle for help with the identification.
