possible Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

David Robinson

At around 6:30pm, on the southern grounds of Oakland's Highland Hospital (south of the old main hospital building, which is now fenced off), I saw a sapsucker perched vertically on an upper branch of one of the tallest trees. I saw it with my binoculars, in profile, for about 5 seconds. It had a clearly visible, vertical white wing patch. The face seemed to have more white than a Red-naped has. But the bird flew off before I could get a closer/longer look.
