Martinez area birds Thursday Jan. 31
rosita94598
Mt.
Diablo Audubon Society had a very successful field trip to the Martinez
area today. We birded McNabney Marsh from the north and south, a bit
of the Pt. Edith Trail from the TransMontaigne Pipeline, and parts of
Martinez Regional Shoreline near the marina along the river. When I
left, our 23 participants had seen/heard 77 species.
Highlights include 3 falcon species, Merlin, Am Kestrel and a Peregrine Falcon which landed on one of the islands in McNabney Marsh. We had 14 species of waterfowl, which included up to 12 Blue-winged Teals in the south end of McNabney along the entry road to Mt. View Sanitary. We also had a Caspian Tern flying near the old ferry pier at the Martinez Marina. This was the second of this species seen on our field trips in less than a week. Another was seen last Saturday at Shollenberger Park in Petaluma.
The 5 gull species included a young Glaucous-winged Gull and 3 Thayer's
(now Iceland) Gulls, all seen from the south observation platform for
McNabney Marsh.

Alan Kaplan
Friends! Feb 1, 2019 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM Golden Gate Audubon Society, First Friday Birdwalk, February 1, 2019, Tilden Nature Area. To Jewel Lake by the road and back by the Lower Pack Rat Trail. Today's theme was Winter Survival of Birds, especially pertinent this week with the extreme weather in the Midwest a concern for birds and those who love them! I will post the notes at EBB-Discussion@groups.io We had a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks "in copulo" at the TNA entrance, a pair of Hooded Mergansers at Jewel Lake, and the Red-breasted Sapsucker continues at the cotoneaster behind the first picnic table at the "blue placard" parking spaces near the entrance. Allen’s Hummingbird has returned, as predicted by the flowering of the Pink-flowering currant. 28 species were seen by 41 observers. Alan,
Thanks for leading another informative
bird walk. As usually you imparted us with information that was
of great interest.
I took a few photos and put them on my
site, including the Red-breasted Sapsucker, Hooded Merganser, some
very cooperative Brown Creepers, and some discrete, yet suggestive
shots of the Red-shoulders Hawks.

I also have some photos from my trip to
South Africa last month.

Went to meet the new in-laws, but
managed to get a few bird photos in and around Cape Town.
Best Regards,
George

Re: Burrowing Owl (w/ slight squirrel kerfuffle) + Mountain Bluebird Q
Derek
I’m at theAlbany Bulb now and might be viewing two ravens eating a Burrowing Owl at the northeast corner of the enclosure. They are right by the pipe pulling light colored feathers and also I saw one large chunk of flesh.

Long-tailed Ducks, Black Scoter, Herring Run at Miller Knox Park
Phred Benham
Hello all, This morning Libby Beckman and I observed a large concentration of ducks and gulls brought in by the Herring run. They were right offshore at high tide, viewing from Miller Knox regional park shoreline. Mixed in with the hundreds of Surf Scoter, Greater Scaup, and Bufflehead were 2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, 1 BLACK SCOTER, and the continuing HEERMANN’S GULL. Here is our e-bird checklist from the morning with so-so photos of the Long-tailed Ducks and Black Scoter. https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S52308320 Good birding, Phred Benham Point Richmond, CA Phred M. Burrowing Owl - McLaughlin / Albany
ccoon.wildwood5@att.net <ccoon.wildwood5@...>
Based on a previous post, I went down to McLaughlin entrance by Golden Gate Fields this morning to check on the Burrowing Owl.
The Burrowing Owl was in its normal spot (squirrel hole) where I have seen it since December - in the NE area of the enclosure - maybe a 100 feet from the fence. I have only seen one Burrowing Owl in this enclosure this winter. I saw 3 at one time last winter. Robert Coon

At around 1:15 a Long-tailed Duck was seen in a mixed group of Scaup, Bufflehead, Surf Scoters, and various gulls at the bay access at Western Drive and Cliffside Ct. I recorded video of it swimming amongst the other ducks and then in flight when if flew toward the Chevron Long Wharf. Pt. Richmond

If you didn't make it to Lake Merritt between storms today, and wish you had, then check out this video from my walk along Lakeshore Ave. Almost like being there.
https://youtu.be/rE1akGe-jf8 Just the usual, but always interesting, birds. Plus a rainbow. It was cold (wind chill below 40 F) and windy this afternoon. Kristi Whitfield Oakland, CA

Re: Claremont Tanager
auberciu
Hello.
I am an Italian birder visiting UC Berkeley for a couple of weeks. I should have some free time this afternoon, and the forecast is no rain for today, so I was planning to go to Claremont Canyon. The summer tanager wintering there (which would be a new bird for me) has been sighted lately? I understand correctly that I should look for it along the lower part of the Stonewall-Panoramic trail? Thanks for your help, Alberto -- Alberto Marcone Tavagnacco (UD) Italy

Palm warbler
rosita94598
I left early today for my union meeting in Oakland, thinking I could find the Palm Warbler in Emeryville in the park at Hollis and 62nd Street. It did not work in the 1/2-hour or so I had there, 11:20 to maybe 11:50. I did find Tim Howe and Ed Vine, though. My list consisted of 4 White-crowned Sparrows, some Rock Pigeons flying past and one Black Phoebe. Maybe another time . . . . Hugh B. Harvey Walnut Creek

Claremont Canyon, Berkeley
auberciu
Hi everybody and thanks to the many people who answered my message earlier today.
I went to Claremont Canyon in the afternoon and, with very detailed instructions, had no trouble finding the spot where the summer tanager had been seen. I stayed there for a couple of hours (from a little after 3pm to almost sunset) but the bird did not show up. In the very nice weather I enjoyed the acorn woodpeckers (up to three) thinking that the oak tree is their private property, often chasing the Nuttal's woodpeckers that try to feed there also. Other birds I identified include bushtits, oak titmice, Oregon juncos, California towhees. I thank also the people that volunteered to show me around during my stay in Berkeley (which is about ten more days). I am not sure about my week-end plans yet, but if I'll have time for birding I'll get in touch with some of you. Best, Alberto -- Alberto Marcone Tavagnacco (UD) Italy
