Just spent a thrilling 10 minutes watching the BROWN BOOBY hunt right off the stern of the Cape Orlando right in front of my on the dock. Also was present when I was there at 9:30am this morning

I was out there between the Cape Orlando and Gem this morning around 7:30am and didn't see anything. Then the school of bait fish came in and a couple birders showed and I spotted the Brown Booby doing shallow dives near a Western Gull. She flew around in circles and widen until she almost flew at our heads. This was around 9:00am near when others saw her yesterday morning. Then she flew to the breakwater. Another sighting was a Peregrine Falcon that flew in and landed on the side of the Cape Orlando. Janet Ellis San Leandro

Nesting activity in my yard

I just discovered an Allen’s Hummingbird nest in a redwood tree in my back yard. Other activities include:
Bewick’s Wren nesting in a box on front porch Nuttall’s Woodpecker nesting in dead pine in back yard California Towhee nesting in lemon tree in back yard Chestnut-backed Chickadee in nest box with camera in back yard: 6 eggs laid, 4 hatched on 4/17, one more on 4/18, #6 on 4/19; 4 fledged on 5/8, 2 more on 5/9 Also Brown Creepers were exploring under loose bark on same dead pine for several days, but no nesting. Red-breasted Nuthatches were scuffling with the Nuttall’s Woodpecker over the hole earlier, then were drilling their own holes lower down the tree, but did not nest there. A very productive year. Non East Bay Event, Pt. Bonita Herring Running, Many Birds

My wife just got back from a large herring run at Pt. Bonita (Marin Headlands.) We observe Harbor Seal births there. Opportunity to see "thousands of birds" from an excellent vantage. About eight of the local Harbor Seals have pups and everything is full of wild excitement. Her message follows: "Herring are spawning now in Pt Bonita Cove in the Marin Headlands to the delight of harbor seals and the cormorants, gulls and pelicans. I was there today at low tide around 11 am (near the tunnel to the lighthouse), and could see continual new erupting clouds of sperm in the water in the middle and outside of all the beds of algae or seaweed (don't know my sea plants) below me. Hundreds of cormorants and gulls, dozens of brown pelicans in the water after the fish. Also a dozen or so harbor seals in the water fishing, unusual at low tide; most of the harbor seals resting on the rocks, but today competing for space with hundreds of cormorants and gulls for space. In the distant part of the cove (east of us) we could see easily more than 10,000 Western Grebes out in the cove. Altogether an amazing sight and well worth a trip! 5/9, 9 AM Continuing Brown Booby in Alameda

5/9: No luck yesterday afternoon but this morning brought better luck when I encountered Mark Rauzon at the Alameda shoreline around 9 AM and followed him to the Brown Booby! It was plunge-diving close to shore, south of the ship, Cape Orlando. It moved alongside the Cape Orlando, out west and back around the narrow section of harbor between the Cape Orlando and the Gem State and Adm. Wm. M. Callaghan (docked to the south). I tracked the booby with my scope for some really great views! We watched the bird dive, feed and fly for about 20 minutes before it settled down near the south end of the jetty that’s directly west of the Cape Orlando. Mark headed off and I’m still here watching the booby preen and rest with the Double-crested Cormorants and Western Gulls. It remained in the same spot on the jetty until 10:45 AM- when I heard shrill Gull cries and looked up to see the Booby fly 10’ in front of me! It’s back and diving now by the Cape Orlando.
What a fascinating bird to watch in an interesting area! Yesterday, I enjoyed walking the piers and wandering around for 4 hours, taking in the views and watching other birds and the harbor seals while searching for the Brown Booby. Good luck! Pat Mahoney Hayward |

Walt Duncan and I left Walnut Creek around 11:30 today and by 12:20 we were viewing the Brown Booby on the south breakwater of the seaplane lagoon. fter watching the Booby for a while, I took Walt for a ship tour from the street. I actually worked on three of the ships docked there. Contrary to appearances, unlike the USS Hornet, the other five ships are still crewed and working.

I managed to find the Brown Booby roosting about 3/4 of the way out the breakwater next to the Cape Orlando ship. I was viewing it from the USS Hornet side of the Cape Orlando. It was there when I left. Many thanks for the continued reports this morning.

Brown Booby--Continuing late morning, 5/7

Mary Krentz and I saw the Brown Booby around 10:30 or so this morning. It first appeared flying in from the west in front of where we were stationed at the end of the dock along the USS Hornet. Johan Langewis, also present, first called out the bird. We then moved to the basin between the USS Hornet and the MV Cape Orlando and joined Aaron Maizlish for a second look as the bird made a circuit through the area and then dove. It took off and flew west, toward the breakwater. Mary and I went to the old runways west of Monarch Street, which has a good vantage on the breakwater and basins. After about 20 minutes or so, the bird did not show up again.

Walnut Creek bird sightings Monday

Rosita and I were out of town over a long 4-day weekend, and it is always nice to be home after the hectic travel of halfway across the country by plane. But the really exciting thing for me is that we have a Dark-eyed Junco fledgling in our patio this morning. This bird is feeding by itself, unlike in past years when the adults bring the kids but still feed them. The adults have been in and out of our patio for quite a while, and it is good to know that they have been successful in their endeavors.
Our house is between the north end of Heather Farm Park and Treat Boulevard. In the park this morning, the Caspian Tern was very early, many Violet-green Swallows were flying over the large, mostly natural pond, and a Wilson's Warbler was singing on the east side bushes/willows to the left of the wooden railing. The two female Mallards have managed to hang on to 18 of their ducklings, a major feat. Hugh B. Harvey Walnut Creek |

The brown booby is still on the breakwater By the USS hornet. They do not allow high power cameras, they restricted Off ferry point. A guard said told us you can go on the other side between 6am and 10 PM over by the runways. You left on Monarch and turn left at the bus Workshop.
