If short flights are no problem then possibly it's exposing the flank to solar heating, lice control?
It did a lot of sun bathing today.

It flew about 30 yards last Friday in our presence; never noticed any wing problem. It did not feed in our presence that morning.

Last week I noticed the Britten "droopy wing" thing going on.
Maybe the Bittern is just resting the wing?
