I don't have an opinion of your sighting.
But the Red Crossbills are present in Alameda County and Contra Costa
Counties.
In July 2010 a Red Crossbill was observed & photographed in The
Livermore

Last week I reported a possible Red Crossbill (juvenile or female) in Walnut Creek. The photo is finally up on the EBB_Sightings group page under East Bay Bird ID

Rufous-crowned Sparrow bonanza at Alvarado Park/Wildcat Canyon
Jim Chiropolos and I quickly changed plans Sunday morning when my bike frame broke on the way to meet him. Instead, we drove over to Alvarado Park at about 8am to find an incredibly birdy habitat.

Re: Five Canyons at dusk, correction
It appears that what I thought I checked by comparing the spectrograms is more likely something else, young Red-tailed Hawk. That explains similar calls that we heard elsewhere last night.

URL works without "Mike Shannon" at the end....
They look like domestic ducks with a strong Muscovy strain - not as much flesh around the bill as the real deal, but I suspect that's where it's coming
