I've had my best luck with sandhills at Cosumnes too. Sacramento NWR & Merced NWR have both been good for snow geese; I've struck out at Colusa the couple times I've tried there.

Swamp Sparrow Lafayette Reservoir Thursday AM

I finally found the continuing Swamp Sparrow this morning at Lafayette Reservoir. Following Don Lewis' advice, I went around the lawn behind the visitor center office at the boat docks. Some canoes are stored on racks here. Take the walk beyond the canoes. I went up the hill on the paved path until I was next to a fenced enclosure around a small white storage shed. Below along the reservoir edge, there is some open water with reeds and branches. The Swamp Sparrow was working along that area, behaving much like a Waterthrush--right along the edges, picking at the water, moving under overhanging branches, playing difficult to see at times.

Also consider Consumnes River Preserve near Galt off I-5 just south of Elk Grove. I saw Cranes here last season. Colusa NWR north of Sacramento is generally busy right now. Wildlife Refuge Questions

I wanted to head out to one of the Wildlife Refuges (Sacramento, Colusa, Merced, etc) this weekend. I'm evaluating a 400mm f/2.8 lens and thought one of the refuges with the snow geese or sandhill's would be a good place. Has anyone been out recently to one of these NWR locations? I'm having trouble finding any status on them.
I do intend to spend some time at Coyote Hills too, but was really hoping for some snow geese. I appreciate any input. Thanks, Dave Miller www.dhmphoto.com

Mountain Bluebirds/Patteson Pass

This morning ~9am, there were ~15 Mountain Bluebirds along Patterson Pass Road at Gate 9, basically the first big pullout on the right in the windfarm. Large flocks of Horned Larks, Lark and Savannah Sparrows were also here until the feed truck came blaring its horn to summon the cattle to breakfast. And right when it was getting interesting...

Vicki's Ferruginous Hawk was visible to the south west, sitting on
the ground, from the south end of the Pacific Commons Linear Park. 3 Snow Geese were mixed in with the Canada Geese to the south of the viewing area closest to the dump, and the American Bittern was visible on the edge of the eastern pond almost directly east from the viewing area. Palm Warbler along Landfill Loop, Richmond

About 10am, this morning, Maury Stern and I discovered a PALM WARBLER in a small shrub along the Landfill Loop trail in Richmond. The location was about a half mile from the trail head gate entrance at the parking lot at 1 Parr Blvd. We viewed it for about 30 seconds before it flew off, just long enough to confirm the sighting.

My husband and I had a quick look at an adult male Blue-winged Teal in the pond at the end of Edgewater Road, Oakland yesterday afternoon before it disappeared behind the reeds. This is the pond across from the parking lot by the office for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Shoreline Regional Park. Earlier in the day we could not find the Tufted Duck at Lake Merritt but the female Redhead was among the feeding flock of Scaup and other ducks near the islands and Fairy Land. Good Birding in 2013. I was here for 3-4 hours Sunday morning. A Eurasian Wigeon was in Ora Loma Marsh. The rarest was 2 Sandhill Cranes flying overhead to the south. This is only the third time I have seen them at the shoreline. Only the usual shorebirds were seen but they included 200+ Red Knots and 6-8 Ruddy Turnstones.

While doing an annual Briones Regional Park hike today, our large group spotted a Bald Eagle from the Briones Crest Trail. The sighting was brief but close--four of us had binocs and we all saw it. That's a first for me at Briones Regional Park, though I believe some eagles have nested at nearby San Pablo Reservoir. Other good raptor sightings: Kestrels, juvie Redtails, White-Tailed Kites, Northern Harrier. Also excellent mushroom sightings along the Bear Creek Trail starting at Newt Hollow.

2012 Bay Area Big Year (2012 BABY)
2012 was a great year!
Alameda County along has more than 300 species reported. And there were quite a lot of exciting species sighted from all over other Bay Area counties as well. I started the photo big year expedition in the beginning of 2012 and intended to cover all 9 counties in Bay Area, but ended up only set foot in 5 of them (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara and San Francisco). 288 species is the final. Not a sheer number but it's surely a lot of effort. I would like to thank all those who posted reports and/or gave tips. It wouldn't be possible for me to find and photograph some species without your help. So here it is - the 2012 BABY list. Hope you enjoy the show and I wish you all a great 2013! At 8 AM Tuesday the continuing White-throated Sparrow was seen where the path goes down to the northern boat dock and the continuing Swamp Sparrow was in reeds past the canoes behind the visitor center.

Everybody's favorite Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Since Jean Richmond and I had no luck yesterday in Lafayette with the Swamp Sparrow, my wife, Rosita, and I decided to take her to Castro Valley to Don Castro today. Jean complained that it took all of 20 seconds to see the bird; she said I used to be much better!
We went down the hill off Ursa, but it is still very wet there. Luckily, a park maintenance man had an all-terrain vehicle at the bottom and gave Jean a ride back up the hill. At 85 Jean is not as able as she used to be when she wrote her book, Birding Northern California. But she still likes to get out and see what she can. We did see one of the two White-throated Sparrows in her Alamo yard before we left for Castro Valley, a nice way to start the new year. Hugh B. Harvey Walnut Creek

Big Break American Bittern and Cattle Egrets

This morning there was an AMERICAN BITTERN and 10 river otters in the pond just past the visitor's center at Big Break Regional Shoreline (off of Big Break Road in Oakley).
Also, there were 2 CATTLE EGRETS together in a field on the east side of the Marsh Creek Regional Trail a little bit south of where the trail intersects with the Big Break Regional Trail. Good Birding and Happy 2013 Jeff Acuff Lafayette [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
