Continuing Northern Shrike Cruiser Hsaven Marina Orwood Road Monday afternoon

rosita94598

Six birders waited and watched for the Northern Shrike Monday afternoon. Paul Schorr, Rosita and I arrived well after noon and found Bob and Barb Brandriff already seeing the bird distantly, along with Lee-Hong Chang from San Francisco. Almost as soon as we arrived and had quick glimpses through Bob's scope, the bird disappeared for at least an hour.

Our location was partway along the levee into the marina, past the first set of parked cars on the left. The bird was across the water & RR tracks and farther east near a grouping of utility poles. It sometimes perched on the wires, sometimes on the poles, sometimes on a bush to the right of a very large white sign.

But since it disappeared, some of us walked back toward the marina entrance and the railroad grade crossing, some of us walked farther into the marina area to view the utility poles from a closer location. As I was just arriving for the second time at the RR tracks, Paul called me by cell phone to tell me the bird had returned. We had very distant views of the bird in a bush/tree, but at least for quite a while. Eventually it disappeared for a few moments, then reappeared on top of one of the utility poles. We eventually decided to move to a location more directly across from the poles.

This worked, but the bird was still well across the water and we had our scopes zoomed into almost maximum power. Then it disappeared again after diving low and to our right. We were satisfied with what we had seen, despite the distance. Then, suddenly the Northern Shrike appeared on the wires directly across the road from where we had our scopes set. Those who had cameras were clicking away furiously--it is a good thing we no longer rely on Kodak for rolls of 36 exposure slide film. Check Lee-Hong's eBird list here: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S49706814 https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S49706814 The scalloping on the breast of the bird is stunning.

Within a few moments the bird flew north across the water again and perched on another of the utility poles. It was almost as if it knew we had been hoping for a closer view and it said, "Okay, here you go. Now that's enough and I'm going back." Very obliging, thank you.

Sounded like the guy was approx between Brookdale/Fleming; Maxwell/Cole. Not heard last night.

Canvasback (finally) at Lake Merritt

kateh37@...

Monday morning I walked along the north end of Lake Merritt. I spotted my first Lake Merritt Canvasback of the season by the Rotary center islands among a lot of Ruddy Ducks. Other treats in the same area: 1 Kingfisher on a tree branch on an island, 1 Great Blue Heron atop a cormorant nest on an island, and 2 male Buffleheads. On the arm along Harrison, at least a 100 cormorants flew in and immediately started diving for fish.

Immature Northern Shrike persists near Cruiser Haven Marina, CoCoCo

David Quady and Nancy Boas

Hi, birders:

The immature Northern Shrike that Dan Kopp and Jose Martinez found and photographed on November 1 continued this morning, near the marina at 7000 Orwood Road. I saw it from the levee road at about 37.939633, -121.571632, near where north-south-running power lines cross the railroad tracks and the road. At 8:15 am the bird flew onto the telephone cable that hangs beneath those power lines, stopped to provide a brief but spectacular view from 25 ft away, and then flew to the south, toward a nearby clump of sycamores and out of view.

The only person I encountered during the hour I spent there was driving a pickup truck — we exchanged friendly waves — across the tracks and onto Orwood Road as I stood near the railroad crossing. I stayed on what I took to be public roads.

“No trespassing” signs abound …. Good luck if you try for this bird.

Re: Summer Tanager 11/2, new location

Hi, al.

Any more sightings of the summer tanager? I was up to look both Friday & Saturday & there was no sight of sound of him @ either the last sighting on Hillside or much of the east side of the Clark Kerr campus. Has he decided he's in the wrong place & moved on?

Thanks,

Hi all,

Finally found the Summer Tanager, but in a new location much closer to campus. It was where Hillsdale crosses a small creek. It was calling almost non stop.. Hard to see but finally got a good look - bright, all red male so surely the same individual.

The male Summer Tanager was seen briefly today, Nov. 1 at 9:30 where the Tanglewood trail meets the Claremont Canyon trail or at the start of the fire road up the hill. It was foraging with Robins on pyracanthus berries just above the houses on Tanglewood Road, and flew into the tall Eucalyptus nearest the fire trail and then slowly moved away. It was not seen in the half hour spent searching for it after the initial sighting. It took me 1 1/2 hrs to find it so patience is required.

Good Luck.

Walnut Creek birds Monday November 5

rosita94598

The Tropical Kingbird continued near the wooden railing today in Heather Farm Park, located in the Ygnacio Valley.  Most of the expected winter species were seen, including several American Goldfinches and two Ring-billed Gulls.  There were up to 12 Killdeer at the south end of the north ball fields.

In our patio north of the park, I saw a Slate-colored Junco about 9:40 AM.  I thought I might have seen it a couple of days ago, but it was very early and still dark.  This would be a new yard bird for us in a patio about the size of two parking spaces--maybe.

White-throated Sparrows

Our FOS WTSP appeared on our patio on 2 Nov. An expected annual event. But this morning a 3rd and a record 4th showed up, all visible simultaneously. Immatures migrating with returning adults may account for our seeing 3, and now 4, in recent years. Maybe.

Hooded Merganser at Mountain View Cemetery

kateh37@...

Late Sunday morning I saw a solo male Hooded Merganser in the third reservoir pond up the hill at Mountain View Cemetery. It was in the company of half a dozen Canada Geese, two Pied-Billed Grebes, a bunch of Mallards, and half a dozen turtles (some of which were Red Sliders).

Yep - Bev & Marcus nailed it. Thank you both. My partner can't remember why she dismissed whatever clip of a GHO she found last night, but Marcus' youtube clip is a higher pitched version of the same call.

Northern Shrike -- Continues

Graham Chisholm

Bob Richmond and I arrived at about the same time around 12:45 pm, and managed to find the previously report 1st year Northern Shrike at the Cruiser Haven Marina (or Yacht Club) in eastern Contra Costa County.  The bird was perched on wooden electric pools north of the marina and it occasionally perched on nearby willows (both are along railroad tracks north of the marina).  It was easiest to see the bird from the railroad crossing at the western end of the marina (which is immediately on the left just off the paved road as you go through the gate into the marina.

We knocked on the harbor master's office (blue building with a mural) but no one responded, and one of the resident said it was fine to birdwatch around the marina.

Mount Trashmore 11-04-18

Matthew Dodder

I spent a couple of hours this morning strolling the trails on Mount Trashmore in Hayward Shoreline. I was searching for the Chestnut-collared Longspur that Bob reported yesterday. I was not able to detect it during my stay, but a single LAPLAND LONGSPUR was fairly easy to find in the center of the field.

This is what I recorded October 1 in the Laurel  https://youtu.be/cJUs-BsczIE
If you are still having trouble. Email me. I will send you a link for you to deposit the file and post it on youtube for you

I'd like to know what is. My partner recorded it. Please advise where to post the .wav file so I can link to it here.

In the meantime, what "night bird" in this area sounds like (but of course is not) a Northern Spotted Owl?

There had been a Great Horned Owl near there last month. We are near Kansas and Maple and heard it several nights, as did Marcus.

1 seen on Mt. Trashmore in the middle of the field. Identified by both the flight call (kiddle) and tail pattern in flight. Also has anyone looked for the Northern Shrike in east Contra Costa County.

Hi folks,

Dan Kopp and Jose Martinez found an immature Northern Shrike north of Discovery Bay near Cruiser Haven Marina (or Yacht Club as it shows up on Google Maps).

The marina is about three miles east of Bixler Rd on Orwood Rd. The bird was on either side of the RR tracks, just north of the marina. The exact location is about here: 37.939962, -121..571279 (you can cut and paste into maps search bar).

Good luck,
