(Acting as the messenger)

Bill Chen found and photographed a FIELD SPARROW this evening at Gomes Park in Fremont, a small park due east of Lake Elizabeth in Fremont. This may be a first county record for Alameda. (I see no previous eBird records, but i didn't do any other research.) His excellent photos were posted to the Fremont Birding Circle group on Facebook a short time ago:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1516346665303799/permalink/1953538574917937/

The GPS coordinates of the spot he photographed the bird are: 37.550555, -121.954072

I'll see a lot of you at that park tomorrow morning, i'm sure.

Bald Eagle over Briones Reservoir

Linda T

Sorry for the late first time posting.  Some day I'll get an iPhone.

A Bald eagle and partner were flying over the southern end of Briones Reservoir @ 11:55 am this afternoon.  Seen from the Overlook parking lot.  The white head and white tail were clearly seen by my husband, David, and I.  The bird partner was not clearly seen, but they were circling and soaring together then took off in the same southwest direction.

Wishing all the critters, as well as the people, effected by the fires good luck.

Yesterday, while walking with my 3-year old an osprey came down not far from shore and got a fish- looked like a bluegill. It ate it on a snag on the south side of the lake. Also mixed in a large flock of Canada geese a cackling goose and a white-fronted gose.

Re: Common Poorwill Berkeley - SSL parking

FYI, while PTO has not generally enforced the parking at SSL off hours, it has lately ticketed on weekends and evenings, even though there is supposedly a memorandum of understanding that they would not do so. So park at your own peril.

I haven't seen a Poorwill in Strawberry Canyon for 2 years but this morning there was one on the upper Jordan Fire Trail. Seen and heard with song and flight call. About 2 miles from Space Sciences lot or past the bench if coming from the other direction, in an open portion of the trail. Arrival date in 2014 was Oct. 9. No parking in space sciences lot weekday working hours. It's now posted with a permit required at all times but in off hours I haven't seen this enforced. There's a Tilden RP lot across Grizzley Peak. Small lower lot between the swimming pool and Botanic Garden on Centenniel.

Re: Bay-breasted Warbler at Ardenood (and Brewer's Sparrow)

Jerry Ting

Bay-breasted and Nashville Warbler continued yesterday (10/10/2017) afternoon and frequent the strawberry trees and oak trees east of the gazebo. David Yeamans's eBird report from yesterday includes a Brewer's Sparrow but he did not mention the exact location.

Happy Birding,

.

The vegetation on the floor of the pond was cut fairly recently, making it much easier to bird than normally.  Yesterday late morning I saw 2 sora, 1 common gallinule, and at least 25 Wilson's snipe along with usual expected species.  The large number surprised me but BNA Online says that in some conditions they do aggregate.  Full report on ebird.

Yesterday evening, a Cackling Goose was on the north ball fields with about 200 Canada Geese and one Greater White-fronted Goose.  It was there again tonight, but there were only about 120 Canada Geese.

This morning Tracy Farrington, Fred Safier, some others and I saw an Osprey try at least twice to catch a fish in the large, mostly natural pond.  It was not successful while we were watching.

The Tropical Kingbird continued near the wooden railing on the east side of the same pond.

Heather Farm Park is in the Ygnacio Valley of Walnut Creek.

field. Bird was in fennel by sf bay just west of large
weeping willow type tree. Pink pin flag near spot.

Yesterday afternoon a FOS male Townsend's Warbler visited one of my suet feeders and gleaned in an adjacent redwood tree for some time.

This morning I watched a Yellow-rumped Warbler ground feeding below a feeder complex. I thought I had seen one a few days ago in a different location.

Hopefully they'll stick around until Spring.

Thursday I saw a FOS Double-crested cormorant at Lafayette Reservoir. Friday was a FOS Northern flicker in my yard. Saturday I had simultaneous FOS Golden-crowned sparrow, white-crowned sparrow, Hermit thrush and Oak Titmouse in my yard. The yard is in northeastern Lafayette, near Taylor and Withers.

Ardenwood Bay-breasted

The Warbler was still there at 2 PM today, in spite of the crowds and the fountain being turned off. There is still rancid, unappealing water in the base, and some in the broken figurine on top - both of which sources it visited while there. It also posed nicely a couple of times on top of the figurine. I saw none of the other recently reported birds in the 45 minutes I watched the fountain.
Ardenwood is closed on Mondays.

The Bay-breasted Warbler reappeared briefly at 11:20am at the fountain. At 12:30 in the dell, approximately eastish of the gazebo and southish of the house, there were a Tennessee Warbler and Nashville Warbler in the small trees with multi-colored fruits. There is a harvest festival continuing there today, with 1000 people, I estimate.

Tropical Kingbird - Heather Farm, Walnut Creek - 10/8

Paul Schorr

At 12:45, we had excellent views of the Tropical Kingbird when it perched on dead branches of a willow on the north side of the wooden railing which is located on the east side of the natural pond. We had seen the bird from the opposite side of the pond when it was perched, preening and fly-catching from a tall snag about 100+ yards north of the wooden railing. Our son from CO surprised us with a visit on Saturday and this was a life bird that we “promised” him. Whew!

Lapland Longspur at Ferry Park, Richmond

Mike McClaskey and
I found a Lapland longspur at Ferry Park (just past Miller-Knox Regional Park, Pt RichMond) that was present until flushed by  a dog at 11:10 this am. It was feeding in the intertidal to the right of the remaining buildings by the fishing dock or NE of restricted area sign on fence. Bird flew towards dock and we haven’t refound it yet.
