Tropical Kingbird at Heather Farm Park

Elizabeth Leite <e.leite@...>

The Tropical Kingbird was perfectly perched on some bare branches on the
island directly opposite the boat ramp (as Hugh described previously) at
2PM this afternoon. It was very actively fly-catching and was easy to
see because of the sun's position in relationship to the bird. Its
yellow belly was amazingly bright.

Thanks for leading the group Alan.

Here are my photos from this morning's walk:

http://birds.avianist.com/2016/161007-Jewel-Lake

Not many photos, none great, but they are good enough to verify the bird species (15).

I think I took too much time off and I'm out of practice.

Best Regards,

George

Honored Guest today was Dave Quady, who cheerfully and expertly answered questions all morning! Thanks, Dave!

Today's theme was the Breeding Bird Atlases of the north Bay Area Counties (Marin, Sonoma, Napa and Solano). Dave brought copies of these for us to view and spoke briefly about the Pacific Coast counties and their atlases from San Diego to Humboldt.

Sonoma has recently completed their second BBA, and it is available (preliminary data) at the Breeding Bird Atlas Explorer/Manager website maintained by the USGS Patuxent Bird Research Center. Used copies of most of the other atlases can be found at "the usual suspects" on-line; the coffee-table sized Breeding Birds of Solano County is out of print but stay-tuned for news of a fully-illustrated but reduced-in-size version. Meanwhile, Murray Berner has a smaller version of the Solano BBA available at the Blurb website (maps and species accounts but many fewer photo; print on demand).

Write me if you want a copy of my notes on the Breeding Bird Atlases of Marin, Sonoma (I and II), Napa, and Solano counties.

Next month’s theme will be Migration, using information from the brand-new Handbook of Bird Biology from Cornell Lab of Ornithology/Wiley.

Here are the 30 species seen by our party of 32 observers.

Mallard
Wild Turkey
Turkey Vulture
Cooper's Hawk
Red-tailed Hawk
Band-tailed Pigeon
Anna's Hummingbird
Acorn Woodpecker
Hairy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker
Black Phoebe
Warbling Vireo
Steller's Jay
California Scrub-Jay
American Crow
Common Raven
Chestnut-backed Chickadee
Bushtit
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Brown Creeper
Bewick's Wren
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Hermit Thrush
American Robin
Townsend's Warbler

Tropical Kingbird in Heather Farm Park

rosita94598

I saw the Tropical Kingbird a little later this morning, something around 10 AM or just after.  It was left of the gravel boat ramp at the southwest corner of the large, mostly natural pond.  Had it not sallied out and back, thus showing its brilliant yellow underside, I might never have seen it.  It was perched on a low limb in shadows and was facing away from me.  The soft green back, dark tail and gray head were not particularly outstanding unless one knew where to look with binoculars.  It was amazing how well it hid.

As Tracy indicated, the (a) Tropical Kingbird was first sighted in late January of 2014.  So it was present for at least the second half of that winter.  It then overwintered 2014-2015, 2015-2016 and is now here beginning its 4th winter visit.  We'll see if it sticks out for he remainder of this one.

A n Ebird map showing Tropical Kingbird sightings for California can be seen here:  http://ebird.org/ebird/map/trokin?bmo=01&emo=12&byr=1900&eyr=2016&yr=&env.minX=-124.416&env.minY=32.531&env.maxX=-114.129&env.maxY=42.01&gp=true

I'm posting this message on behalf of Dave Kent who called me at 8:30, this morning, to announce the presence of a TROPICAL KINGBIRD perched atop a tall snag near the concrete viewing platforms on the east side of the natural pond. This species was first sighted in the park on January16th., 2014. Since then, it has now arrived this year and 2015, in October.

Good birding, everyone.

Hi Marcus,

Wow, that must have been quite a sight! I would have been rubbing my eyes before looking again. I had no idea they would congregate that far south. Sounds more Alaskan than Floridian.

I’m envious that you got to see a shuttle launch. We just visited Endeavor in the LA County Museum a few months back. It was more exhilarating than I expected. A launch must have been mind blowing.

I wish you great birding!

Flat out all white heads. No stripes through the eyes. I looked very carefully because I wanted to make sure I wasn't seeing things. It was gorgeous. This was in August 2009 I think. Of course the funny thing going through my mind was if this was a group that, like the KFC Night Herons near the Grand Lake Theater, were waiting for lunch?

Hi Marcus,

I too am in favor of fixing our human-induced screw ups!

Having birded in Florida a lot, I’m wondering if you were not seeing Ospreys on every single light pole? They are indeed ubiquitous on the Gulf Coast.
What do you think?

What I am hoping for is ubiquity. That would mean that we as a species actually fixed a screw up. With the sightings of nesting pairs I would think that it be sooner than later. Although not like Cocoa Beach, FL where they seem to be on every single light pole some times. Thanks everyone for the suggestons.

Not to mention the Lafayette to Briones to San Pablo Reservoirs Bald Eagle. And Doug Elinson reported one circling near 580 and Edwards Ave last Feb.

I also read that Stienstra column, but
you don't need to drive all the way down to Casa de
Fruta or Del Valle to see Bald eagles: they have also been
seen up in the EBRPD, with both perches and fly-overs at the
EBRPD Botanic Garden and perched up on the Com Towers atop
Sibley, contesting that perch with the resident golden
eagles. So, right here in Oakland, as a matter of fact! But
these sightings are serendipitous, so get out there and walk
around and look up! You never know who might fly
by.
Speaking of fly-overs, we
saw our first osprey over our house in Sheffield Village
last evening. It was flying from one of those reservoirs,
either Chabot or Lafayette, and heading towards the Bay. It
wasn't talking.

At Piper Slough I find Caspian Tern, Canvas Duck, Red-shouldered Hawk and first of the season  Merlin
At Bethel Is. I did stationary observation from from Sugar Barge Resort off Willow Rd. where there is a view on Franks Tract
Noticeable findings from this location, Western Gull, Long-billed Curlew, Orange-crowned Warbler

At Ironhouse, most valuable visitor was a Hooded Merganser, this is Contra Costa earliest county record from Fall, also a single Greater Scaup and Blue-winged Teal

Richmond Sewage Ponds eBird checklist--DO NOT "Accept" and corrected link

Logan Kahle

Hi all,

An important note about the eBird checklist in the following post (the one from Emilie): if you open the link provided (which I would recommend you not), it will ask if you want to accept the checklist into your account, and please say DECLINE. A number of people have already clicked "Accept", which adds it to their account and produces erroneous observer data. So, to anyone who has already accepted the list, if you could please delete this checklist from your account, that would be great. Additionally, to anyone else, please do not accept this checklist, or better, do not open the link. A link to this checklist, without it being added to your account, can be found here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S31891399

Apologies to anyone on this listserv who does not use eBird and to Emilie for reposting the list, but this is important that more people do not accept this checklist to their account in eBird.

Good birding,
Logan

Re: BA Raptors: Bald Eagles and an Osprey Fly-by

Marcus

There were ospreys around too but I was rather stunned and delighted by the sight of a bunch of bald eagles sitting on light poles in the middle of the day along the north side of  the West Cocoa Beach Causeway just after you get to the Island.

Best regards,
Janet Hanson

Re: BA Raptors: Bald Eagles and an Osprey Fly-by

Janet Hanson

Hi Marcus,

I too am in favor of fixing our human-induced screw ups!

Having birded in Florida a lot, I’m wondering if you were not seeing Ospreys on every single light pole? They are indeed ubiquitous on the Gulf Coast.
What do you think?

Best regards,
Janet Hanson

After enjoying the Western Bluebirds at the Martinez Shoreline

Als

with Doug Mosher happened upon 20 juvenile CA Quail in Redwood Park scurrying down the hillside and taking dust baths on the trail. A delightful sight!

I remember Doug's sighting.  and fruitlessly hung around as that's near my house.

I also read that Stienstra column, but
you don't need to drive all the way down to Casa de

seen up in the EBRPD, with both perches and fly-overs at the
EBRPD Botanic Garden and perched up on the Com Towers atop
Sibley, contesting that perch with the resident golden
eagles. So, right here in Oakland, as a matter of fact! But

Apparent hybrid cormorant at Lake Merritt

Noah Arthur

It was a beautiful, quiet cloudy fall day at Lake Merritt, the kind of California fall day I'd almost forgotten could exist anymore after spending the last two years in Nebraska. Birds were everywhere; lots of migrants but nothing rare; sparrows are starting to arrive in the botanical/community garden -- this area should be closely watched for Clay-colored or Palm Warbler in the coming weeks!

The most interesting bird was a cormorant perched on the line of white buoys just offshore from the dome cage. At a distance, the dark lores and "undercut" orange throat patch seemed to suggest Neotropic Cormorant, but with a closer view something didn't see quite right. Closer still, and I was convinced this wasn't a pure Neotropic, but definitely didn't seem to be a Double-crested either. I was blessed with the opportunity for lots of close-up photos of the bird in various postures (I ended up taking exactly 371 pictures of it -- "rapid fire" mode was probably unnecessary for a stationary resting cormorant!). Here are some of the best photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/73989529@N02/albums/72157674739038205

Characteristics that seem to rule out pure Double-crested are the dark lores without even a hint of orange, and the blackish "pouch" skin -- the orange is only on the sides of the throat and lower bill and the mid-throat (pouch) is dusky blackish. The tail may also look a little long, and the bill a little short, for Double-crested, and the head/neck look oddly thick and poofy. However, the rear border of the throat skin is positioned exactly as it would be on a Double-crested Cormorant -- square-cornered, not forming an acute angle as it would on a Neotropic Cormorant (the illusion of an acute angle is created by the fact that the pouch skin itself is blackish). My best guess on this bird is a hybrid between Double-crested Cormorant and one of the dark-billed cormorants (Pelagic or Brandt's). And the absence of any hint of Pelagic's vacuum-cleaner-neck/pencil-bill structure makes me lean towards Double-crestedXBrandt's...

Any suggestions on this bird's ID would be much appreciated!

FOS Northern Flicker

Townsend's Warbler and Hairy WP

Elizabeth Leite <e.leite@...>

A FOS Townsend's Warbler shyly appeared at my suet feeder this morning,
always a thrilling sight. In the late afternoon yesterday at Lafayette
Reservoir I heard, then located, a Hairy Woodpecker in the pines just
behind the picnic tables on the other side of the road opposite the
concert platform. I've never seen one at the reservoir before and I
didn't know if this sighting is unusual. It certainly was for me.
