Golden Gate Audubon Society First Friday Bird Walk, February 5, 2016. Tilden Nature Area, to Jewel Lake and back again.

"Bird" O'the Day was the River Otter, in a face off with a Great Egret, at Jewel Lake. Good views of Red-shouldered Hawk and Hermit Thrush, lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers (comments were made that this winter seems an exceptionally good year for them), and a Great Blue Heron fly-over rounded out the morning. One Red Admiral butterfly was seen, too.

Don’t forget: next weekend is The Great Backyard Bird Count, for 2016.

Here are the 29 species seen by our 33 observers: 

Bufflehead   male was showing some bridling (courtship?) behavior
Great Blue Heron   flyover, as close to a Pterodactyl as you can see today!
Great Egret   seemed to be following the River Otter around, from one side of the lake to the other
Turkey Vulture     makes it official!
Sharp-shinned Hawk  
Red-shouldered Hawk       lots of vocalizing
Red-tailed Hawk  
Anna's Hummingbird 
Allen's Hummingbird     the pink-flowering currant is finally in bloom, and the Allen's has returned 
Nuttall's Woodpecker  
Hairy Woodpecker       male and female
Northern Flicker 
Black Phoebe  
Hutton's Vireo  
Steller's Jay  
Western Scrub-Jay  
Common Raven  
Chestnut-backed Chickadee  
Brown Creeper  
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
