Golden Gate Audubon Society First Friday Bird Walk, February 5, 2016. Tilden Nature Area, to Jewel Lake and back again.
"Bird" O'the Day was the River Otter, in a face off with a Great Egret, at Jewel Lake. Good views of Red-shouldered Hawk and Hermit Thrush, lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers (comments were made that this winter seems an exceptionally good year for them), and a Great Blue Heron fly-over rounded out the morning. One Red Admiral butterfly was seen, too.
Don’t forget: next weekend is The Great Backyard Bird Count, gbbc.birdcount.org for 2016.
Here are the 29 species seen by our 33 observers:
Bufflehead male was showing some bridling (courtship?) behavior
Great Blue Heron flyover, as close to a Pterodactyl as you can see today!
Great Egret seemed to be following the River Otter around, from one side of the lake to the other
Turkey Vulture makes it official!
Red-shouldered Hawk lots of vocalizing
Allen's Hummingbird the pink-flowering currant is finally in bloom, and the Allen's has returned
Hairy Woodpecker male and female
Best of Boids!
