My Palo Alto Adult School Master Birding class visited Coyote Hills today. Lots of nesting behavior seen including NORTHERN HARRIER, MARSH WREN and TREE SWALLOWS. Highlights were a single MERLIN flying over the marsh, a drake EURASIAN WIGEON on the north pond, 10 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE on a hillside beyond the north pond, a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, VARIED THRIUSH and a GREAT HORNED OWL near the visitors center. We also found an intergrade NORTHERN FLICKER with red malar and uncial. Only one Selasphorus species was detected in the Butterfly Garden, and it was only briefly seen so could not be identified. A flock of about 12 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS flew over the ridge.
