question re: cackling goose

I had the opportunity to closely observe a cackler hanging out with Canadas at Lucretia Edwards Shoreline last Sunday and noticed two things, that the cheeks and slight neck ring were buffy compared with the nearby Canadas, and that the cheek patches did not meet under the chin, but were separated by a wide black line from neck to beak. What can anyone tell me about these features? Are they common individual variations? The references I've consulted don't mention either one. Thank you!
