BC Heron in a hurry- pic

The mudflats surrounding Doolittle Pond (MLK Shoreline) were very exposed by a low tide late in the afternoon yesterday.  It brought in the "usual suspects" including about five Black-crowned Night Herons.  They usually skulk the flats for fish stranded in mud puddles or just freeze in place til something is spotted.

But when this one saw a stranded fish, it uncharacteristically sprinted for twenty feet or so to seize it before a California Gull moved in.
