I just had a great view, in great light of a purple martin flying north
over my Lafayette home, traveling with a second, similar bird that may
have been a second martin; however, I did not get my binoculars on the
I distinguished the martin from all other swallows by its uniformly dark plumage and
from European starling by the notched tail, lack of yellow bill and
stronger flight style. Both birds seen were
followed soon afterwards by a white-throated swift.
