On Thursday, May 4, 4 of us were in Pine Canyon and found a Robin nest with 4 featherless chicks, eyes still closed. The parents were busy feeding them, which was captured on video--easy to do as the nest was practically over the trail into the canyon.
This past Thursday, May 11, more video was made of an adult collecting fecal sacs from the now well-feathered chicks. On Friday afternoon, the nest was empty--possibly predated? No, the chicks had already fledged, and were on branches in bushes below but nearby. Video was also made of the begging chicks being fed by the parents.
Absolutely amazing that they can mature so fast, but certainly necessary to avoid that ever-present danger of predation.
