Is Digital Humanities a Collaborative Discipline?

Is Digital Humanities a Collaborative Discipline?
Joint-Authorship Publication Patterns Clash with Defining Narrative
Julianne Nyhan and Oliver Duke-Williams
The London School of Economics and Political Science
The Impact Blog

"As an emerging discipline still defining itself, Digital Humanities offers
an ideal opportunity to reflect on its broader disciplinary narratives.
Julianne Nyhan and Oliver Duke-Williams examined its collaborative nature
through the lens of publication patterns in some of its core journals.
They found predominately single-authored papers were published during the
time-frames, suggesting individual scholarship is still playing a large
role. But this may be a case where publication and assessment havent yet
caught up with wider disciplinary practice.

.

Collaboration is widely considered to be both synonymous with and
essential to Digital Humanities (DH). This is because one person can
rarely possess all of the (inter)disciplinary and technical knowledge
needed to implement many DH projects.

snip

In DH research literature, in grey literature and on scholarly blogs the
collaborative nature of DH is often evidenced by reference to the joint
and multi-authored publications that are seen as characteristic of the
field."

Hacking the Humanities

Hacking the Humanities
JULY 7, 2015
BY ELIAS MUHANNA
The New Yorker

"In the past decade, digital scholarship has gone from being a quirky
corner of the humanities to a mainstream phenomenon, restructuring
funding landscapes and pushing tenure committees to develop new
protocols for accrediting digital projects. As the stakes have grown,
so has an expectation about the role that the “digital turn” might play
in revivifying the humanities, effecting a synthesis with the sciences,
and other weighty causes. For many of its champions, the tinkering
character of the digital humanities represents a kind of artisanal
inquisitiveness, a hands-on, tool-building, map-making ethos that
chafes against more abstract modes of humanistic inquiry."

Keeping Up With...Digital Humanities

Jennifer L. Adams and Kevin B. Gunn.

The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL)

http://www.ala.org/acrl/publications/keeping_up_with/digital_humanities

Introduction

At its core, Digital Humanities (or DH) is an emerging,
interdisciplinary movement which looks to enhance and
to redefine traditional humanities scholarship through
digital means. However, this definition only scratches the
surface; DH must be understood in the context of the
history, methodologies, and perceptions which its
practitioners bring to the table. Although it fairly recently
entered popular awareness , DH first emerged more than
sixty years ago as “humanities computing,” when it formed
the basis for such projects as the Index Thomisticus, an
electronically-compiled Thomas Aquinas concordance.
Since the Index, however, Digital Humanities research has
developed in broader and more complex directions, and is
now part of the general scholarly conversation. Digital
Humanities is not limited to any one field—it is highly
collaborative, and draws contributors from many
backgrounds—but it does have a solid base in academia.
In recent years, related initiatives have emerged at
universities (and elsewhere) worldwide. For academic
librarians, the increasing prominence of Digital Humanities,
its ongoing debates and the issues and opportunities associated
with bringing it into the library, are worth noting. In this issue of
Keeping Up With... we address some of the most significant
“need-to-know” issues for academic librarians interested in
Digital Humanities.

DH encompasses a wide range of definitions, activities -- and controversies

Some see Digital Humanities as a discipline unto itself; others
define it as a movement within existing disciplines; still others
argue that DH represents the future norm of humanities research
and should simply be called “humanities.” It is not always clear
what qualifies as DH. Merely digitizing a resource may not count—
but is research alone sufficient, or does ‘true’ digital humanities
require programming or tool development? Academia is also still
struggling to accommodate DH research into traditional ideas of
scholarship, especially since it is often open-access—meaning that
DH’s reputation in academic circles, and its weight in promotion
and tenure reviews, varies widely. Recently, Digital Humanities
has experienced backlash for a number of additional factors,
including its faddish appearance, perceptions that it is exclusive,
and the tendency to equate DH with the digitalization of
scholarship and higher education. Nevertheless, with uncertainty
about Digital Humanities comes great possibility, and it is essential
for DH-inclined academic librarians to remain aware of ongoing
debates in DH, both generally (through such resources as

Digital Humanities Now

and the

ACRL Digital Humanities Discussion Group) and at their own
institutions.

DH invites—and demands—collaboration with parties outside of the library

Librarians need additional training and education in order to contribute effectively

Data offers many possibilities for library contributions

DH research relies heavily on data. What types of data are generated
on campus, by whom and for what reasons, will dictate librarians’
responses to this emerging research paradigm.  ACRL’s 2012 report

Academic Libraries and Research Data Services,

outlines contributions which librarians and archivists can make to
data management.

snip

The Digging Into Data Challenge web site has a list of data repositories.

Conclusion

As Barbara Rockenbach wrote in the January 2013 issue of the

Journal of Library Administration,

“DH is messy. It involves uncertainty, deep collaborations, and a flexibility
that is foreign to traditional library culture.”  Nevertheless, it can offer
academic librarians a variety of opportunities to integrate in and collaborate
with their communities in new ways.

Conservatives are trying to give us all a headache and not just by taking away our health insurance and worshipping Donald Trump. They are launching an attack on the concept of reality itself. This is not entirely new, of course. The right has made good use of propaganda and the old you can believe me or you can believe your lying eyes routine for many years.

.

Recall that back in the early 2000s, many of us were alarmed to see Iraq war propaganda making its way into the mainstream, eagerly passed on by major newspapers and cable news shows. The people pushing the attack had a long history of advocating for the invasion before 9/11 and had even made clear they were hoping for a pretext. Nonetheless, in those days of compulsory patriotic flag-waving the media showed no inclination to be even slightly skeptical, and the result was catastrophic.

.

Even as news was filtering out that the case against Saddam Hussein for supposedly aiding Osama bin Laden was thin to the point of nonexistence, top leaders such as Dick Cheney were blithely asserting that they had proof. The media largely took them at their word. When it became obvious that Saddams WMD cache did not exist, many on the right simply insisted that it did. This 2015 poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University shows that tons of people still believe it:

.

Overall, 42 percent of Americans believe that U.S. forces found active weapons of mass destruction program in Iraq. Republicans are more likely to hold this belief than Democrats: Fifty-one percent of Republicans think its probably or definitely true that an active program was found after the 2003 invasion, with 14 percent saying that it was definitely true. Still, large portions of other groups think that the WMD program, a major part of the justification for the invasion, was actually found, including 32 percent of Democrats.

.

It was a confusing time. But war propaganda is hardly unprecedented and America has deployed it as often as any country. From the Hearst yellow journalism that ginned up support for the Spanish-American War to the Gulf of Tonkin incident in Vietnam, the United States government used such tactics to gain public support for wars overseas.

.

The first Gulf War featured one of the most blatant examples ever when the first Bush administration hired the P.R. firm Hill & Knowlton to help them sell the war. According to John R. MacArthurs book Second Front: Censorship and Propaganda in the 1991 Gulf War, their focus groups showed that there was a particularly vivid storyline that worked: the mistreatment of infants.

.

So at a hearing prior to the vote, Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., and Rep. John Porter, R-Ill., called a 15-year-old Kuwaiti girl named Nayirah before the Congressional Human Rights Caucus. The distraught young woman testified about a terrifying event at a Kuwait City hospital. She said, I volunteered at the al-Addan hospital. While I was there I saw the Iraqi soldiers coming into the hospital with guns and going into the room where 15 babies were in incubators. They took the babies out of the incubators, took the incubators, and left the babies on the cold floor to die.

.

From that point on the babies yanked from the incubator story was emblematic of the viciousness of Saddams troops. I personally knew people who were moved into supporting the war because of it. And it was a lie. The young woman who testified was not some anonymous Kuwaiti candy-striper but rather a member of the royal family whose father was the ambassador to the U.S. When human rights organizations investigated later, they could not find that she had any connection to the hospital, or any evidence that any incident of that kind had happened at all.

Why Implementing Swipe Gestures Causes A Mobile Accessibility Issue

By Jennison Asuncion.

"...In short, swipe-based functionality is not accessible to all
users. It is worth noting that while the focus here is on swipe
gestures, this would hold true for any other gesture in use by any of
these assistive software products..."

Accessible Emoji

By Léonie Watson.

"...These things are simple to fix though. We need to tell the browser
to expose the emoji (or its container) as an image, then give it an
accessible name..."

Inaccessible Websites Dent Business Profits, as Online Shoppers 'Click Away'

By Tristan Parker.

"...The report revealed that 71% of disabled customers with access
needs will 'click away' from a website that they find difficult to
use. A key finding from the survey was that the spending power of
these online shoppers who click away is £11.75 billion - money which
is then spent elsewhere by those same shoppers, on sites that they can
access..."

Web Accessibility in Healthcare

By Catharine McNally.

"...To tie this all together, having a 'blueprint' of the hospital
build to evaluate accessibility compliance is just as important in a
website build. Teams and stakeholders are able to anticipate potential
accessibility barriers and fix it before time and money is spent."

"...From what we've seen, this is a real game changer in how we think
about and code our layouts. When web components are modular like Lego
bricks down to the elements level, they become more versatile and
easier to maintain. We believe it's the next step to take in modular
web design..."

CSS Writing Modes

By Jen Simmons.

"Since you may not have a lot of time, I'm going to start at the end,
with the dessert. You can use a little-known, yet important and
powerful CSS property to make text run vertically..."

Finding a Research Paper Topic : Lists of Research Subject Ideas
In addition to lists of suggested term paper topics, one can go to Google Scholar or Google Books or Temple Summon Search
and search a broad topic area and look at the search results for topic ideas. Clicking items that provide good ideas to see more
information about those sources that give a possible topic will provide more information about that topic to help refine the idea
for the paper.

While there are better methods and sources for ideas, any list of
possible topics that provides an idea that fits someones need for
a topic can be used, even lists in paper mills, but the student needs
to know that buying a term paper and using it is plagiarism and the
results for a bought paper are usually going to result in a paper of
inferior quality as well. Also, as with any list of sources or ideas,
one must exercise critical judgement regarding which to use.

Also, looking closely at the promotional content on Buy Your Paper
types of sites may help discourage one from using a paid for
paper approach.  Poor word choice and glittering generalities are a
couple of bad writing seen in this example below.  If this business
writes this type of content to gain customers, one must wonder how
the papers are written.  Also, professors did not just quit their truck
driving job to become a scholar. They may quickly notice that the
bought paper is in no way your writing style seen from other
assignments, hence the first step towards a disaster.

Also, in using database search results, one must be patient and look at
numerous items to find better resources for the type of information sought.
I often ask students about our hugely concrete outdoor environment if
they noticed the huge orchard of fruit trees right outside our library.

Orchard Photographs
I then point out that if they are provided with a basket, they will not go
down to this fictitious orchard and harvest leaves. They will want apples,
oranges and pears.  The same is true with search results if one wants
a quality paper.
One must be careful to use relevant and quality resources.

Any use of Web search Google for term paper topics will find many term paper
mill advertising web sites with no or low quality lists of term paper topics.

These videos continue providing lots of discussions on how to choose a research topic and more.

Call it scorned beef! The owner of the Carnegie Deli chewed up and spit out a last-ditch offer from a former dishwasher to buy her fabled restaurant on the day its slated to close.

.

Marian Harper-Levine, the deli's president, reaffirmed her intention of shuttering the 79-year-old deli Friday night at midnight, hours after Upper East Side restaurateur Sammy Musovic offered $10 million to buy the eatery and save it from closure.

.

Musovic had offered $5 million for the Seventh Ave. deli in October.

.

snip

.

Carnegie Deli owner won't consider sale  and thats bull!

.

Just as she said after Musovic's first offer, Harper-Levine reiterated that she wants to retain the Carnegie name so she could expand "wholesale and retail operations" and focus on "licensed locations at Madison Square Garden, The Mirage in Las Vegas, NV, Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, PA and during the US Open Tennis Championships in Flushing, Queens."

.

Musovic, who started his restaurant career as a dishwasher at the Carnegie Deli in the 1970s, pledged on Friday to double his initial $5 million offer, which had also been schmeared by Harper-Levine. The deli's spokeswoman called Musovic's offer "publicity-inspired."

.

"Carnegie Deli is not for sale and the family is certainly not considering any publicity-inspired offers," the spokeswoman, Cristyne Nicholas, said in a tongue-lashing that highlighted Harper-Levine's interest in "keeping her father's legacy alive with quality-control through the family-owned and operated meat processing plant and bakery in New Jersey.

.

Musovic blasted Harper-Levine for short-sightedness.

.

I'm just trying to save this landmark that's been here for nearly 100 years," he said, adding about 20 years to the Carnegie's illustrious history and misspelling the name of the restaurant on a $10 million check he showed to the press. She wont talk about it. She wants to close something that is as much a part of New York City as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building."

.

Customers were on Musovic's side.

.

"Since I was a kid, I'd come here and get pastrami sandwiches bigger than my head," said John Martins, 52, a native New Yorker who now lives in Bushwick. "It's a shame that this place is closing. I've seen places come and go but some things belong in New York City. I'll miss this place."

.

Tourists are drawn to the hype, of course, but also the quality.

.

"There's no better corned beef than Carnegie's," said Bill Nousak, 41, who says he always gets a meal at the deli when he's in town from Jacksonville, Fla. "I came to the city today just for this."

The Smell Test: Educators Can Counter Fake News

Discerning fact from fiction in news and online content has never been more challenging. From pizzagatefalse reports of a child sex ring operating in a DC pizza parlorand creepy clown attacks to retweeted election headlines touting events that never happened, fake news is rampant. Twenty-three percent of Americans say they have shared fabricated reports, knowingly or not, according to a December Pew Research Center report.

.

Librarians have an opportunity to take leadership in the current crisis. As proven authorities on information literacy, library professionals can help students analyze news authenticity. Its time to step up to the plate.

.

That requires expertiseand perseverance. While school librarians are updating lessons on news literacy, a recent study from researchers at Stanford University underscored the challenges of media and social media education for kids. Students ability to evaluate information on the Internet is bleak, according to the report.

.

snip

.

The difference now is that there is more fake news out there, and the proliferation of social media just means it can be disseminated rapidly via many channels, says Frank W. Baker, a media literacy expert who conducts workshops across the country. We have more access than ever. But access does not imply quality, and the vast information were being bombarded with demands a renewed emphasis on and teaching of media literacy.

.

Also, technology now makes it possible for someone to design a fake news site that looks and feels very much like the real thing, and social media enables false or incorrect reports to go viral. In Waukegan, IL, for example, students at an elementary school admitted that their reports of creepy clowns wielding weaponsreally just construction workers with toolswere not true. But by that time, the school was already on lock down. Shared through social media, the story fueled fears that bands of clowns were lurking all over the Chicago area.

.

Demand for instructional resources for news literacy is on the rise. Weve gotten a lot of interest in the past week, says Peter Adams, senior vice president for educational programs at the Chicago-based News Literacy Project (NLP). Launched in 2008 by former Los Angeles Times reporter Alan C. Miller, the organization originally focused on bringing the four pillars of its curriculumnews matters, the First Amendment, the standards of quality journalism, and the current news and information landscapeinto schools by partnering with teachers and librarians, as well as volunteer journalists who would share their own experiences. The lessons are taught as drop-in units, often in English language arts or social studies classes.

"Your resume represents you as a professional on a piece of paper – it is your first impression with your future boss. Interestingly, resume writing is not a skill that is generally taught in school so once you are ready to start looking for a job, you are left to fend for yourself. In this age of technology, most people search the internet. There is an overabundance of information available online, yet very little of it is helpful and if you decide to take matters into your own hands, it is difficult to figure out where to start.

Start by putting together the content: work experience, summary of qualifications, achievements, education, keywords and any other important information that makes a powerful resume."
