ORCID "Connecting Research and Researchers"

David P. Dillard

ORCID "Connecting Research and Researchers"

What is ORCID

ORCID is a nonprofit helping create a world in which all who participate in research, scholarship and innovation are uniquely identified and connected to their contributions and affiliations, across disciplines, borders, and time.

Our vision

ORCID’s vision is a world where all who participate in research, scholarship, and innovation are uniquely identified and connected to their contributions across disciplines, borders, and time.
Our mission

ORCID provides an identifier for individuals to use with their name as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities. We provide open tools that enable transparent and trustworthy connections between researchers, their contributions, and affiliations. We provide this service to help people find information and to simplify reporting and analysis.
Our values

ORCID is a not-for-profit organization, sustained by fees from our member organizations. Our work is open, transparent, and non-proprietary. We are guided by the principles of privacy and researcher control, and the vision of identifier-enabled research information infrastructure. We make decisions collaboratively, involving our staff, Board, those who support our mission, and the researchers and community that are the purpose of our work.

We take a global view. We have a diverse team, deployed internationally in our "virtual office." We engage with a wide range of organizations and people to ensure broad viewpoints. We strive to be a trusted component of research infrastructure with the goal of providing clarity in the breadth of research contributions and the people who make them.

The ORCID Community

The ORCID community includes individual researchers, universities, national laboratories, commercial research organizations, research funders, publishers, national science agencies, data repositories, and international professional societies, all of whom have been critically affected by the lack of a central registry for researchers. ORCID coordinates with the community through Working Groups and bi-annual Outreach meetings.

Documentation

ORCID works with the research community to identify opportunities for integrating ORCID identifiers in key workflows, such as manuscript submissions and grant applications. ORCID encourages third parties to develop applications that interact with and enhance the utility of the ORCID Registry. We provide tools, use cases, documentation, examples, and open-source code to support your integration efforts.

http://orcid.org/about

The ORCID Team

ORCID is governed by a Board of Directors with wide stakeholder representation. ORCID is supported by a dedicated and knowledgeable professional staff, led by Executive Director Laure Haak and Technical Director Laura Paglione.

Membership

Individuals may use ORCID services freely. ORCID membership is open to any organization interested in integrating ORCID identifiers. All member fees are used to sustain and develop ORCID for the benefit of the research community.

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a nonproprietary alphanumeric code to uniquely identify scientific and other academic authors and contributors.[1][2][3][4][5] This addresses the problem that a particular author's contributions to the scientific literature or publications in the humanities can be hard to recognize as most personal names are not unique, they can change (such as with marriage), have cultural differences in name order, contain inconsistent use of first-name abbreviations and employ different writing systems. It provides a persistent identity for humans, similar to that created for content-related entities on digital networks by digital object identifiers (DOIs).[6]

The ORCID organization offers an open and independent registry intended to be the de facto standard for contributor identification in research and academic publishing. On 16 October 2012, ORCID launched its registry services [7][8] and started issuing user identifiers.[9]

Uses

The aim of ORCID is to aid "the transition from science to e-Science, wherein scholarly publications can be mined to spot links and ideas hidden in the ever-growing volume of scholarly literature".[26] Another suggested use is to provide each researcher with "a constantly updated ‘digital curriculum vitae’ providing a picture of his or her contributions to science going far beyond the simple publication list."[1] The idea is that other organizations will use the open-access ORCID database to build their own services.

It has been noted in an editorial in Nature that ORCID, in addition to tagging the contributions that scientists make to papers, "could also be assigned to data sets they helped to generate, comments on their colleagues’ blog posts or unpublished draft papers, edits of Wikipedia entries and much else besides".[1]

In April 2014, ORCID announced plans to work with the Consortia Advancing Standards in Research Administration Information to record and acknowledge contributions to peer review.[27]

In an open letter dated 1 January 2016 eight publishers, including the Royal Society, the American Geophysical Union, Hindawi, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, PLOS, and Science, committed to requiring all authors in their journals to have an ORCID iD.[28][29]

Integrations

Nick Jennings' ORCID in his Wikidata entry

In addition to members and sponsors, journals, publishers, and other services have included ORCID in their workflows or databases. For example, the Journal of Neuroscience,[39][40] Springer Publishing,[41] the Hindawi Publishing Corporation,[18] Europe PubMed Central,[42] the Japanese National Institute of Informatics's Researcher Name Resolver,[43] Wikipedia,[44] and Wikidata.[45]

Some online services have created tools for exporting data to, or importing data from, ORCID. These include Scopus,[46] Figshare,[47] Thomson Reuters' ResearcherID system,[48] Researchfish,[49] the British Library (for their EThOS thesis catalogue),[50] ProQuest (for their ProQuest Dissertations and Theses service),[51] and Frontiers Loop.[52]

In October 2015, DataCite, CrossRef and ORCID announced that the former organisations would update ORCID records, "when an ORCID identifier is found in newly registered DOI names".[53][54]

Third-party tools allow the migration of content from other services into ORCID, for example Mendeley2ORCID, for Mendeley.[55]

Some ORCID data may also be retrieved as RDF/XML, RDF Turtle, XML or JSON.[56][57] ORCID uses GitHub as its code repository.[58]

Have you ever tried to search for an author, only to discover that he shares a name with 113 other researchers? Or realized that Google Scholar stopped tracking citations to your work after you took your spouse’s surname a few years back?

If so, you’ve probably wished for ORCID.

ORCID IDs are permanent identifiers for researchers. Community uptake has increased tenfold over the past year, and continues to be adopted by new institutions, funders, and journals on a daily basis. ORCID may prove to be one of the most important advances in scholarly communication in the past ten years.

Here are ten things you need to know about ORCID and its importance to you.

Contents of This Blog Post

1. ORCIDs protects your unique scholarly identity
2. Creating an ORCID identifier takes 30 seconds

ORCID Identifiers FROM Cornell University Library

"ORCID® iDs are unique researcher identifiers designed to provide a transparent method for linking researchers and contributors to their activities and outputs. arXiv allows you to link your ORCID iD with your arXiv account. This linkage will allow your works on arXiv to be unambiguously connected to your works in other systems. It will help with the ongoing challenge of distinguishing your research activities from those of others with similar names.

We encourage all arXiv authors to link their ORCID iD with arXiv."

"Accurate attribution has long been a challenge in the scholarly sphere. Whether one is the researcher, funder, publisher or another contributing to this ecosystem, it is critical that work be properly identified and tied to the right individual, institution, publisher or funder. Thomson Reuters has long known this, hence the reason for its ResearcherID solution. And, hence the reason for the company being a founding member of the Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) initiative.

ResearcherID and ORCID are complementary attribution identifiers. They go hand-in-hand and it is essential that scholarly authors and researchers have both. ORCID is a platform-agnostic identifier, whereas the ResearcherID identifier is specific to Thomson Reuters. With a ResearcherID, users can:

Showcase and network more easily across the Web of Science™
Access citation profile and metrics in the Web of Science
Provide end-user feedback on publications for claiming purposes, which will propagate through other Thomson Reuters offerings

With the latest release of ResearcherID, members can seamlessly exchange data between their ResearcherID and ORCID profiles"

Publishing blog
From January you’ll need an ORCID

7 December 2015 by Phil Hurst

Mandating the use of Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) by submitting authors.

ORCIDORCID provides a unique identifier for all researchers that can be linked to their different research works and activities across multiple platforms. It also serves to distinguish authors with similar names and simplify searching of publications databases (such as PubMed, Scopus, etc.) to avoid retrieving articles by authors with similar names. Close to 1.8 million researchers have already created their ORCID iD. The service is non-profit and community driven.

From 1 January 2016, we will require the submitting author to provide an ORCID identifier as part of the manuscript submission process.

Benefits of creating an ORCID iD
It’s a time saver
It provides cross-platform compatibility
Your privacy is protected
It helps to build reputations

Author: Torsten Reimer
Abstract

The ORCID researcher identifier ensures that research outputs can always reliably be traced back to their authors. ORCID also makes it possible to automate the sharing of research information, thereby increasing data quality, reducing duplication of effort for academics and saving institutions money. In 2014, Imperial College London created ORCID identifiers (iDs) for academic and research staff. This article discusses the implementation project in the context of the role of ORCID in the global scholarly communications system. It shows how ORCID can be used to automate reporting, help with research data publication and support open access (OA).

Guest blog by Alice Meadows, Director of Community Engagement & Support at ORCID

If you’re a researcher or work in a research organization, the chances are that over the past couple of years you’ve started to hear about ORCID. Maybe you’re one of the over 2 million people who have already signed up for an ORCID iD, or you know colleagues who have.

Perhaps you’ve been asked to provide an ORCID iD when applying for a grant, submitting a manuscript, or when using a research information management system. Or you may have responded to our call for feedback in our first community survey last year.

"Being able to effectively and consistently link yourself to your research is not only convenient, but also vitally important if you want your work to be discovered.

Since its launch in October 2012, the ORCID registry has issued over 500,000 unique identifiers to help researchers and scholars keep track of their outputs and other “works”.

By the end of 2014, the ORCID team hope to triple this figure to 1.5 million ORCID ID’s and today Symplectic is pleased to announce its own contribution to this most important of causes by becoming one of the first ORCID members to use Authenticated ID’s to transfer data from the ORCID registry to an institutional information management system."

It has been almost a year since ORCID – the open, non-profit, community-based effort to provide a registry of unique researcher identifiers and a transparent method of linking research activities and outputs to these identifiers – was launched. More than 253,000 ORCID profiles have been created as of today. Since its launch, the Scopus team has continued to add enhanced integration points while supporting the mission of ORCID.

What is the Difference Between CSS Variables and Preprocessor Variables?

By Chris Coyier.

"Variables are one of the major reasons CSS preprocessors exist at
all. The ability to set a variable for something like a color, use

variables ("CSS Custom Properties") for the same reasons. But there
are also some important differences that should be made clear..."

anyone could use it. But who do we mean when we say 'anyone?' While a

truly universal design works for users with varying physical
abilities. To achieve this, designers and developers must take into

This course is addressed to life sciences researchers and technicians who routinely work with complex biological
structures (specimens) and need to digitise their samples for different reasons, such as digital preservation,
quantitative or biomechanics analyses, etc.
The goal of this course is to explain how you can work with a range of technologies with the aim of obtaining a 3D virtual
models from different sources, such as laser imaging, photogrammetry and (micro) computed tomography (CT). By the end of
the course participants should be able to obtain high quality digitalizations of samples with the most commonly used
techniques and also be able to edit and manipulate the digital models that are produced.
Attendees will also learn to stain with Lugol’s iodine, a specific technique for specimen preparation for micro CT
scanning which maximizes soft-tissue differentiation in CT imaging datasets. DiceCT Online: https://dicect.com/.

EVALUATION :

ASSESSMENT:

To the Student Who Wants an Evaluation of a Specific Dissertation Writing Service Because the Assigned Term Paper Topic is Too Tough --

OR

-- Why Go to All the Aggravation and Work of Writing a Paper When One Can Purchase Their Paper from a Writing Service???

.

.

A student asked me via email in very weak prose for an evaluation of a dissertation writing service another student suggested that this student use. This service notes on their web page that they provide "non plagiarized papers". This student and any student thinking about using or actually using such a service first of all needs to realize that if the service they are using is honest about not plagiarizing their work, nevertheless, while a paper they sell to a student may not be plagiarized, the act of turning in such a paper as their own research and writing is an act of plagiarism as that student is claiming the work of another is their own work, an act that is the definition of plagiarism. If it is discovered at his college as a plagiarized paper this act can lead to severe penalties up to and including expulsion from that school.

.

There is another matter for this student to realize. If the student's teacher has seen writing by this student in tests or other papers, the sudden change in writing style from the student's own writing to a bought or student plagiarized paper could earmark such a paper for investigation and since a paper writing service aims at making money easily rather than providing a quality product, the professor may be looking at a badly written and documented paper, i.e. a plagiarized paper with a different prose style which merits a failing grade on its own quality rather than because it was plagiarized.

.

One of the web pages for the "writing service" cited by the student that gives no prices for their exquisitely written dissertations on their web pages has these badly written paragraphs promoting their service on one of their web pages.

.

Lets see if we can help this writing service a bit with their website prose.

Lets see if we can improve this two paragraph statement about ordering your professionally written disertation.

.

Ordering a dissertation from us is easy.

Go to our ordering form and fill it out completely.

Provide us with a detailed description of the paper you are required to write.

Create an account if you are a new customer.

Make a full payment for this work. This is required for any work to be done on your paper.

We assign our best writers to work on your dissertation.

[Does this mean that they have some not so good writers as well? Maybe they write the web pages for this service.]

.

.

While I am not the best writer in the world by any means, I hope I have provided an improvement in the prose quality on the website for this dissertation writing service.

.

What I do suggest for this student is that they get help with this assignment from the writing center at their college and from reference librarians at their college library.

.

This student request should serve as a reminder to professors and other academic professionals that there are students who for various reasons
or due to various pressures will pay for an assigned paper and submit it as their own rather than doing the research and writing themselves.
It is my opinion that prevention of plagiarism is a far better solution
to plagiarism than penalization after the fact. This includes either teaching them how to find sources or telling them where to go for this help.

.

Here are some resources that may help with prevention of plagiarism.

A search of information literacy in Google
finds About 2,830,000 results

A search of information literacy in Google Scholar
finds About 117,000 results

A search of information literacy in Google Books
finds About 103,000 results

Unfortunately if one adds database searching to this mix, one finds a small percentage of the sources about information literacy find this concept in the mix.

Search Strategy

"information literacy" AND ("DATABASE SEARCHING" OR "SEARCHING SKILLS" OR "SEARCH ENGINES" OR "HOW TO FIND SOURCES")

.

In Google this search finds 164,000 sources

In Google Scholar this search finds 11,300

In Google Books this search finds 4,510 sources

Seriously, how can students evaluate, analyze or use as evidence article content or book content on a topic if the student cannot find any of these sources?????

Online Dictionary for Library and Information Science

by Joan M. Reitz

Western Connecticut State University.

Libraries, Libraries Unlimited, Inc

Publisher  Libraries Unlimited, 1996

http://www.abc-clio.com/ODLIS/odlis_A.aspx

ODLIS: Online Dictionary for Library and Information Science was created by Joan M. Reitz, Arts and Humanities Bibliographer at the Ruth A. Haas Library, Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) in Danbury, CT. Ms. Reitz holds a B.A. degree (1972) from Reed College in Portland, Oregon; an M.L.I.S. degree (1991) from the University of Washington, Seattle; and an M.A. degree (1998) in history from Western Connecticut State University. Her primary academic interests are history of the book and publishing, history of political and social revolutions, and art history.

History of the Dictionary

ODLIS began at the Ruth Haas Library in 1994 as a four-page printed handout titled Library Lingo, intended for undergraduates not fluent in English and for English-speaking students unfamiliar with basic library terminology. In 1996, the text was expanded and converted to HTML format for installation on the WCSU Libraries Homepage under the title Hypertext Library Lingo: a Glossary of Library Terminology. In 1997, many more hypertext links were added and the format was improved in response to suggestions from users. During the summer of 1999, several hundred terms and definitions were added, and a generic version was created, omitting all reference to specific conditions and practices at the Ruth Haas Library.

In the fall of 1999, the glossary was expanded to 1,800 terms, renamed to reflect its expanded scope, and copyrighted. In February, 2000, ODLIS was indexed in Yahoo! under "Reference - Dictionaries - Subject." It was also indexed in the WorldCat database, available via OCLC FirstSearch. In 2000, the dictionary was expanded to 2,600 terms and by 2002 an additional 800 terms had been added. From 2002 to 2004, the dictionary was expanded to 4,200 terms and cross-references were added, in preparation for the print edition. Since 2004, an additional 1,500 terms and definitions have been added.

Purpose of the Dictionary

ODLIS is designed as a hypertext reference resource for library and information science professionals, university students and faculty, and users of all types of libraries. The primary criterion for inclusion is whether a librarian or other information professional might reasonably be expected to know the meaning of the term in the context of his/her work. A newly coined term is added when, in the author's judgment, it is likely to become a permanent addition to the lexicon of LIS. The dictionary reflects North American practice. However, because ODLIS was first developed as an online resource available worldwide, with an e-mail contact address for feedback, users from many countries have contributed to its growth, often suggesting additional terms and commenting on existing definitions. Expansion of the dictionary is an ongoing process.

Broad in scope, ODLIS includes not only the terminology of the various specializations within LIS but also the vocabulary of publishing, printing, binding, the book trade, graphic arts, book history, literature, bibliography, telecommunications, and computer science when, in the author's judgment, a definition might prove useful to librarians and information specialists in their work. Entries are descriptive, with examples provided when appropriate. The definitions of terms used in the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules follow AACR2 closely and are therefore intended to be prescriptive. The dictionary includes some slang terms and idioms and a few obsolete terms, often as See references to the term in current use. When the meaning of a term varies depends on the field in which it is used, priority is given to the definition that applies within the field with which it is most closely associated. Definitions unrelated to LIS are generally omitted. As a rule, definition is given under an acronym only when it is generally used in preference to the full term. Alphabetization is letter-by-letter. The authority for spelling and hyphenation is Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language (College Edition). URLs, current as of date of publication, are updated annually.

"One of the reasons behind citing sources and compiling a general
bibliography is so that you can prove you have done some valid research to
back up your argument and claims. Readers can refer to a citation in your
bibliography and then go look up the material themselves. When inspired by
your text or your argument, interested researchers can access your
resources. They may wish to double check a claim or interpretation you've
made, or they may simply wish to continue researching according to their
interests. But think about it: even though a bibliography provides a list
of research sources of all types that includes publishing information, how
much does that really tell a researcher or reader about the sources
themselves?

http://writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/annotated-bibliographies/

An annotated bibliography provides specific information about each source
you have used. As a researcher, you have become an expert on your topic:
you have the ability to explain the content of your sources, assess their
usefulness, and share this information with others who may be less
familiar with them."

What is an annotated bibliography?

An annotated bibliography or annotated bib is a bibliography
(a list of books or other works) that includes descriptive and

How to Use the United States Government Agency Section
of the Statistics Resources Research Guide for Statistical

Data Sources for Specific Topic Searches

Finding and using statistical sources is a challenge for most students and many researchers.
Finding government statistical sources are even more of a befuddlement.
Requests for govenment information, let alone statistics, have dwindled in recent years in live
reference situations. Providing a tool that shows, agency by agency, where government
statistics hide in a group of links to database search results contributes to statistical literacy
and to information literacy for government statistical sources and to the uses for government
statistics.

Even though the actual publications found in these searches are not free, all of the databases
used are. Over fifty government agencies of the United States federal government are now
included and this is a work in progress as is the entire statistics resource guide. United States
government agencies do provide statistical data for other countries.

Many teachers tell students not to use Google for serious research as I religiously did until
October 2014 when I saw one web address on the MedLib-L discussion group. I have no idea
what the post was about, I just noticed one web address and as the lesson evolved, I started
joining the students rather than trying to change them in regards to using Google Web Search
as part of my database searching research tool.

“The Digital Scriptorium is a growing image database of medieval

and renaissance manuscripts that unites scattered resources from

many institutions into an international tool for teaching and scholarly

research. It bridges the gap between a diverse user community and

the limited resources of libraries by means of sample imaging and

extensive rather than intensive cataloguing.”

Primary Sources on Copyright (1450-1900)

"This is a digital archive of primary sources on copyright

from the invention of the printing press (c. 1450) to the

Berne Convention (1886) and beyond. The UK Arts and

Humanities Research Council
(AHRC) funded the initial phase (completed in 2008)

focusing on key materials from Renaissance Italy

(Venice, Rome), France, the German speaking countries,

Britain and the United States.

We are now adding materials from other countries.

Primary sources from Spain were published in 2012,

and the Netherlands will follow in 2014.

Using the archive for the first time?

A possible starting point is here.

For each of the geographical zones / jurisdictions, a

national editor has taken responsibility for selecting,

sourcing, transcribing, translating and commenting

documents. These include privileges, statutes, judicial

decisions, contracts and materials relating to legislative

history, but also contemporary letters, essays,
treatises and artefacts.

The national editors’ brief was to limit the selection to

50 core documents for Germany, France, Britain and

Spain, and to 20 core documents for Italy and the US

(these covering only a shorter period). However, the

editors have sourced many more contextual documents

which are fully catalogued, and linked to the core
materials. Document selection has been scrutinised by

an international advisory board."

Bibliography of Typography and Printing

This is my personal list of recommended books on Typography and Printing,
chosen to help the student, amateur printer, and the professional graphic

artist learn more about type and design. I have selected these books because

I think they are the best books on Typography and Book design, the most

interesting books on Printing and Typography, and the most useful books

on Typography and Printing. I've thrown in my favorite books on printing

types and the history of printing, too. I've read all these books and I'd be

happy to answer questions about them if I can help.

The Evolution of the Modern Book:
Understanding the Future of the Printed Word
in the Context of Fine Printing Presses and Artists Books
Elisabeth Schyberg
Sound Ideas

From the Abstract:

"In this digital age, it is easy to predict that print is dead and

soon people will be reading nothing but e-books. I wanted to

explore the world of fine printing presses and artists’ books,

where print is still very much alive, to see what this sector

thinks about the future of the physical book. I visited several

fine presses and book artists in Northern California and England,

as well as some libraries with unique examples of these kinds

of books. I read books and articles about the place of the

physical book in today’s society. My initial thought was that

people who are involved in the process of making books that

are works of art will feel very strongly about e-books and the

encroachment of technology into the printed world. However,

I found a much more varied response than I was expecting:

after the press visits and reading relevant literature, there is

no overwhelming outcry against e-books from those who love

the physical book. Rather, some who spend their lives with

books have realized the benefits of e-books and have embraced

their possibilities, while others see fine press books and e-books

coexisting side by side indefinitely because of their vast disparities."
