Journal abbreviations

http://help.jabref.org/en/JournalAbbreviations

JabRef can automatically toggle journal names between abbreviated and unabbreviated form,
as long as the names are contained in one of your journal lists.

This feature can be configured under Options → Manage journal abbreviations.

JabRef includes a fairly extensive build-in list of journal abbreviations, but it it still likely to be
incomplete for the purposes of many users. You can add abbreviations in the form of a personal
list or external lists.

Online Dictionary for Library and Information Science

by Joan M. Reitz

ODLIS: Online Dictionary for Library and Information Science was created by Joan M. Reitz
Arts and Humanities Bibliographer at the Ruth A. Haas LibraryWestern Connecticut State University (WCSU)
in Danbury, CT. Ms. Reitz holds a B.A. degree (1972) from Reed College in Portland, Oregon;
an M.L.I.S. degree (1991) from the University of Washington, Seattle; and an M.A. degree (1998)
in history from Western Connecticut State University. Her primary academic interests are history
of the book and publishing, history of political and social revolutions, and art history.

History of the Dictionary

ODLIS began at the Ruth Haas Library in 1994 as a four-page printed handout titled Library Lingo, intended
for undergraduates not fluent in English and for English-speaking students unfamiliar with basic library terminology.
In 1996, the text was expanded and converted to HTML format for installation on the WCSU Libraries Homepage
under the title Hypertext Library Lingo: a Glossary of Library Terminology. In 1997, many more hypertext links were
added and the format was improved in response to suggestions from users. During the summer of 1999, several
hundred terms and definitions were added, and a generic version was created, omitting all reference to specific
conditions and practices at the Ruth Haas Library.

In the fall of 1999, the glossary was expanded to 1,800 terms, renamed to reflect its expanded scope, and copyrighted.
In February, 2000, ODLIS was indexed in Yahoo! under "Reference - Dictionaries - Subject." It was also indexed in the
WorldCat database, available via OCLC FirstSearch. In 2000, the dictionary was expanded to 2,600 terms and by 2002
an additional 800 terms had been added. From 2002 to 2004, the dictionary was expanded to 4,200 terms and
cross-references were added, in preparation for the print edition. Since 2004, an additional 1,500 terms and definitions
have been added.

Purpose of the Dictionary

ODLIS is designed as a hypertext reference resource for library and information science professionals, university
students and faculty, and users of all types of libraries. The primary criterion for inclusion is whether a librarian or other
information professional might reasonably be expected to know the meaning of the term in the context of his/her work.
A newly coined term is added when, in the author's judgment, it is likely to become a permanent addition to the lexicon
of LIS. The dictionary reflects North American practice. However, because ODLIS was first developed as an online
resource available worldwide, with an e-mail contact address for feedback, users from many countries have contributed
to its growth, often suggesting additional terms and commenting on existing definitions. Expansion of the dictionary is
an ongoing process.

Broad in scope, ODLIS includes not only the terminology of the various specializations within LIS but also the vocabulary
of publishing, printing, binding, the book trade, graphic arts, book history, literature, bibliography, telecommunications,
and computer science when, in the author's judgment, a definition might prove useful to librarians and information
specialists in their work. Entries are descriptive, with examples provided when appropriate. The definitions of terms used
in the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules follow AACR2 closely and are therefore intended to be prescriptive.

The dictionary includes some slang terms and idioms and a few obsolete terms, often as See references to the term in
current use. When the meaning of a term varies depends on the field in which it is used, priority is given to the definition
that applies within the field with which it is most closely associated. Definitions unrelated to LIS are generally omitted.
As a rule, definition is given under an acronym only when it is generally used in preference to the full term.
Alphabetization is letter-by-letter. The authority for spelling and hyphenation is

Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language

"Your resume represents you as a professional on a piece of paper – it is your first impression with your future boss. Interestingly, resume writing is not a skill that is generally taught in school so once you are ready to start looking for a job, you are left to fend for yourself. In this age of technology, most people search the internet. There is an overabundance of information available online, yet very little of it is helpful and if you decide to take matters into your own hands, it is difficult to figure out where to start.

Start by putting together the content: work experience, summary of qualifications, achievements, education, keywords and any other important information that makes a powerful resume."

12 New Job Hunt Strategies That'll Re-Energize Your Search
          The Muse
          https://www.themuse.com/advice/12-new-job-hunt-strategies-thatll-reenergize-your-search
          1. Focus First on Companies—Not Openings
          2. Meet the Moderators
          3. Check Out Offline Jobs
          4. Expand Your Network

“Most job seekers focus on networking with colleagues and people in their industry, but neglect to talk to other people in their lives. This doesn’t mean that you should lead off every conversation with the news that you’re on the hunt, but you can strive to work it into conversation in a natural way. Neighbors, acquaintances from the dog park, people in your rec soccer league—any or all of these contacts may have knowledge or connections that could prove helpful.”

5. Foster Your Relationships
          6. Attend Events Outside Your Industry
          7. Make a Human Connection
          8. Build and Send a Newsletter
          9. Bypass HR—if Possible
          10. Confirm That the Listing’s Active
          11. Converse With Leaders
          12. Host a Job-Search Party

            Networking isn’t job searching  01 . 19 . 2016   Job search

By Workopolis
        https://careers.workopolis.com/advice/networking-isnt-job-searching/

“One of our correspondents sent me an article yesterday called, “You’re not working because you’re not networking.”
Which is kind of a catchy title to say out loud. But the point of her piece was that the number one job search strategy
that people who are out of work should be employing is networking.I haven’t published that story yet, because I worried
that on some level it could be misleading to people who are actually looking for employment. The fact is that if you suddenly
find yourself without a job, you can’t at that moment decide to start networking and connect your way into a new one.”

And that’s why networking isn’t a job search strategy.

“So should you be networking?  By all means. Speak with people in your industry, or in the industry you want to work in.
Find opportunities to participate in events or activities. See how you can develop the in-demand skills, and demonstrate your
knowledge of these to relevant contacts.”

Networking essentials
Keep in touch with your network.
Make sure your social network information matches your resume.
Pay it forward.
Talk to people in your industry.

“Over the past 12 months I’ve been asking people how they found their most recent job.
(Here’s the link to the survey.) About 3,000 people have responded so far, most of whom
are in staff or management roles. The results are shown in the graphic.”

Networking Rules!
Start by reading Harvard Prof Todd Rose’s new book, The End of Average.
Recognize that LinkedIn is a network of 400 million people, not just a database of them.
Demonstrate the ability to do the work, not pass some assessment test, to get the interview.
Be different. If you do what everyone else does you’ll get average results.

“Lou Adler (@LouA) is the CEO of The Adler Group, a consulting and training firm helping companies
implement Performance-based Hiring. He's also a regular columnist for Inc. Magazine and
Business Insider. His latest book, The Essential Guide for Hiring & Getting Hired (Workbench, 2013),
provides hands-on advice for job-seekers, hiring managers and recruiters on how to find the best job
and hire the best people. His new video program provides job seekers inside secrets on what it takes
to get a job in the hidden job market.”

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF LABOR.

O*NET - Beyond Information - Intelligence

The Occupational Information Network (O*NET) is a database of occupational requirements
and worker attributes. It describes occupations in terms of the skills and knowledge required,
how the work is performed, and typical work settings. It can be used by businesses, educators,
job seekers, human resources professionals, and the publicly funded Workforce Investment
System to help meet the talent needs of our competitive global economy. O*NET information
helps support the creation of industry competency models.

The O*NET System:

Promotes business efficiency and talent development

Supports education of the workforce through skills training and curriculum design for regional economic development

Facilitates career guidance and career advancement accounts

The O*NET system, using a common language and terminology to describe occupational requirements,
supersedes the seventy-year-old Dictionary of Occupational Titles with current information that can be
accessed online or through a variety of public and private sector career and labor market information systems.
The O*NET system, which has been significantly upgraded and improved since its introduction and continues
to undergo periodic enhancements, includes the O*NET database, O*NET OnLine, and the O*NET Career
Exploration Tools.

O*NET Database

The O*NET database is a comprehensive source of descriptors, with ratings of importance, level,
relevance or extent, for more than 900 occupations that are key to our economy. O*NET descriptors include:
skills, abilities, knowledge, tasks, work activities, work context, experience levels required, job interests,
work values/needs, and work styles. New tools and technology (T2) data provides information on machines,
equipment, tools, and software that workers may use for optimal functioning in a high performance workplace.

O*NET OnLine

O*NET OnLine is a web-based viewer that provides easy public access to O*NET information. Powered by the
latest O*NET database, users have access to new and updated data unavailable before. Using O*NET OnLine,
students, job seekers and workforce, business, and human resource professionals can: find occupations to explore,
search for occupations that use designated skills, browse occupations by high growth industry, identify key
In-Demand occupations, view occupation summaries and details, use crosswalks from other classification systems
such as military or apprenticeship to find corresponding O*NET occupations, view related occupations, create and
print customized reports outlining their O*NET search results, and link to other online information resources.

Google Docs Subject Guide
(GGLE) DOCS SUBJECT GUIDE

What is Google Docs

“Google Docs is a word processor included as part of a free, web-based
software office suite offered by Google within its Google Drive service.
This service also includes Google Sheets and Google Slides, a spreadsheet
and presentation program respectively. Google Docs is available as a web
application, mobile app for Android, iOS, Windows, BlackBerry, and as a
desktop application on Google's ChromeOS. The app is compatible with
Microsoft Office file formats.[2] The application allows users to create
and edit files online while collaborating with other users in real-time.
Edits are tracked by user with a revision history presenting changes.
An editor's position is highlighted with an editor-specific color and
cursor. A permissions system regulates what users can do. Updates
have introduced features using machine learning, including "Explore",
offering search results based on the contents of a document, and
"Action items", allowing users to assign tasks to other users.”

“Google Docs is available as a web application supported on Google Chrome,
Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari web browsers.”

Go to your Google Drive account by going to Google Drive at this web address

https://www.google.com/drive/

and clicking to the Go to Google Drive Icon

About Google Drive

https://www.google.com/drive/

Click on New at the top left

Then either click on Google Docs from the drop down menu or from the right arrow

select from either “Blank Document” or “From a Template”

Google Docs is designed to be a competitor
to Microsoft Word with several differences.

1.                   Google Docs is a cloud based tool.  It does not exist on ones computer hard drive
but this gives a Google Docs user access from anywhere to the documents in ones
Google Drive account.
However those with access to Word can any Google Doc onto a

Word document and save that document version to their computers hard drive or other
document storage services or email the document as an email attachment using either
their Documents file in Microsoft Office or Google Drive.

2.       One can share the document with others using the share button and then work
collaboratively with others to create and revise these shared documents.
The advantage of this method is that one document from Google Docs is used throughout

while with Word, the same document is passed back and forth creating an additional copy

of the document with each emailing of that document. A Google document must have a

title before it can be shared.  To share a document one clicks the SHARE icon at the top

right of the first document page.

     3.       Google Docs mimics the 2003 version of Word in using the File tab system.

The remaining options on this tool bar are for formatting and related tasks

Clicking 100% permits the user to resize pages from 50% to 200%

Clicking “Normal Text” allows changing to one of these options

Title, Subtitle, Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3,

Clicking the  11 permits changing font size from 8 to 98 with only selected sizes facilitated.

B is bold , I is italics, U is underline and A permits changing font color while the pen point

changes the color surrounding the text. These are followed by icons for add link, add comment,

image and these formatting options: left align, center align, right align, justify, line spacing,

numbered list, bulleted list, increase indent, decrease indent, clear formatting.

The Image icon allows these procedures from the drag and drop menu:

There are handles at each corner and the center top and bottom of each image and these can

be used to drag pictures to different locations on the page including in the middle of text in

which case the text will surround the image.  The top center handle, however, is shaped

differently and will allow one to rotate the image.

Google Docs are stored and updated in the “Activity” section of Google Drive.
The Documents can be found by clicking on Activity on the left sidebar of ones

Google Drive website or on More on the same sidebar to find Google Docs on

the account sidebar.  It is important to give a title to each document created in

Google Docs as soon as a document is created, it is listed on the Activity file in

Google Drive and continued failure to name documents will create a number of

documents called UNTITLED DOCUMENT.  To name a document or change its title

one clicks on the document title and inside the resulting box makes the needed

changes.
