Alternative facts

From Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_facts

.

"Alternative facts" is a phrase used by Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway during a Meet the Press interview,[1][2][3][4] in which she defended White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer's false statements about the attendance at Donald Trump's inauguration as President of the United States. When pressed during the interview with Chuck Todd to explain why Spicer "utter[ed] a provable falsehood", Conway said "Don't be so overly dramatic about it, Chuck. You're saying it's a falsehood, and ... our press secretary, Sean Spicer, gave alternative facts to that."[5][6] Todd responded by saying "Alternative facts are not facts. They are falsehoods." Conway responded that counting crowds of over a million people is not an exact science and that the statements made by Spicer could not be proven true or false.[7]

.

Conway's use of the phrase "alternative facts" to describe what are widely regarded as falsehoods, was mocked on social media, and sharply criticized by Dan Rather, Jill Abramson, and the Public Relations Society of America. The phrase was extensively described as Orwellian, meanwhile sales of the book Nineteen Eighty-Four increased by 9,500 percent, becoming the number one best seller on Amazon.com.[8][9]

First, let me pass on a request that many of you might be interested in as well.  Subscriber Bill
Zachry (wzachry@...) is conducting an online social psychology course.  His department added
a lab component to the course, in which Bill would like to conduct some empirical projects with his
online students.  So, Bill would like to know if anyone can "recommend any data-collection research
projects that have been developed specifically for, and used successfully in, online classes."  You
can find one such resource below.  Also, on the Resources for the Teaching of Social Psychology site,
the Methods page, you can find links to

     -  the Department of Psychology site at the University of Mississippi at which you can 1) have
your students participate in lab experiments from which you can download the class' data for class
analysis, 2) have your students participate in ongoing, online studies, and 3) view demonstrations of
experiments without participating (http://psychology.olemiss.edu/psychology-research/)

     -  an article by Jessica Hartnett on free and available internet resources for teaching stats
and research design

Do you know of other data-collection resources that Bill could use in his online course?  If you do,
please pass them along to Bill and/or me.  Thanks!

Second, I have a social psychology quiz for you!  I have sent you a few examples from this U.S.
election season of how followers of a candidate often interpret whatever he/she does as favorable,
even if previously they had felt negatively about the issue or behavior.  As we are becoming more
polarized in the U.S. we will likely see many more examples of this phenomenon.  What would you call
that?  Certainly cognitive dissonance and its reduction or avoidance are in play.  But, is there a
better social psychology concept/term that captures this action of interpreting favorably anything
your candidate/leader prefers?  What would you call it?  For example, check out this little
experiment the New York Times conductedhttps://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2017/01/25/we-asked-people-which-inauguration-cro
wd-was-bigger-heres-what-they-said/?utm_term=.925ce8038e82.

In the last issue I sent you an article about this research.  Now, here are some
suggestions for what you can do with this research in class.

Gender & Culture:  Personal space and proxemics

Examples

        Prejudice: SWB: Shopping While Black

        http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/versace-black-code_us_5861fbefe4b0de3a08f600d5

A lawsuit alleges that employees at this store were instructed by the manager to "say 'D410'
in a casual manner when a Black person entered the store."  D410 is the store's code for a black
shirt.

        Prejudice: Institutional discrimination

        http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/king-rep-ban-social-justice-events-arizona-schools-
article-1.2945382

An Arizona lawmaker "is proposing a far-reaching law in Arizona, House Bill 2120, banning
virtually every college event, activity or course which discusses social justice, skin privilege, or
racial equality."

Topic Resources

Aggression: The disinhibition of violence through the media

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/act-four/wp/2017/01/11/in-pg-13-movies-audiences-see-gunshots-bu
t-not-the-pain-that-follows/?utm_term=.628f0fdd2743

This article describes how the consequences of violence seen in PG-13 movies are often
hidden, which helps to lower inhibitions towards violence.

Aggression: "The surprising history of 'snowflake' as a political insult"

https://thinkprogress.org/all-the-special-snowflakes-aaf1a922f37b#.p9iahe8eg

If you didn't follow the recent U.S. elections, you may have missed this insult revived
from earlier times.

Attitudes & Behavior:  Conservatives use nouns; liberals use adjectives

https://digest.bps.org.uk/2017/01/12/why-conservatives-like-to-use-nouns-more-than-liberals-do/

https://digest.bps.org.uk/2017/01/24/are-these-uncertain-times-drawing-us-into-a-cycle-of-dogma-and-
prejudice/

It's all about our handling of uncertainty.  In fact, the second link also takes you to a
research summary describing how uncertainty may drives us toward dogmatic beliefs and
prejudice.

Attitudes & Behavior/Social Judgment:  "Belief in conspiracies largely depends on
political identity"

https://today.yougov.com/news/2016/12/27/belief-conspiracies-largely-depends-political-iden/

This is another example of what I mentioned in the "quiz" above.

Attraction & Relationships: "10 comics that show what polyamorous love is really like"

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/polyamory-comics_us_586c1ea2e4b0de3a08f9f240

Conflict & Peacemaking/Persuasion: "The seven habits of highly depolarizing people"

http://better-angels.org/the-seven-habits-of-highly-depolarizing-people/

Here are some very good suggestions for persuading or working with those who are quite
polarized in their views.  I was going to say "provide alternate facts," but this is
probably better advice.

Conformity:  Joining a crowd and your health

https://digest.bps.org.uk/2017/01/04/joining-a-crowd-transforms-us-psychologically-with-serious-heal
th-implications/

http://www.talkpsych.com/talk-psych-blog/2017/1/13/religious-engagement-predicts-healthbut-why

This research describes both positive and negative effects on health from joining a crowd
of others.  The second link is to a blog entry from subscriber David Myers that may be
relevant.  Some new research suggests some health benefits from religious engagement.

Gender & Culture/Methods: "Five myths about the role of culture in psychological
research"

https://www.psychologicalscience.org/observer/five-myths-about-the-role-of-culture-in-psychological-
research#.WIkJoZKIRrO

Gender & Culture/Prejudice:  The story of Black, female scientists in the movie Hidden
Figures

https://thinkprogress.org/the-forgotten-story-of-nasas-black-female-scientists-comes-to-life-in-hidd
en-figures-c45105f6f011#.ykwcnmq4g

Methods: Open Stats Lab

https://sites.trinity.edu/osl

This new site provides a wealth of resources for the teaching of statistics through a
variety of data sets.

Persuasion:  "How to convince somebody when facts fail"

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-to-convince-someone-when-facts-fail/

Another good article on how a person's worldview can be so powerful as to undermine
evidence -- and what to do about it

Persuasion:  "Hollywood goes to war"

http://marb.kennesaw.edu/hollywoodandwar/

View these exhibits and materials about Hollywood during WWII, including some of  the
propaganda that came out of Hollywood.

Prejudice: Disability History Museum

http://www.disabilitymuseum.org/dhm/index.html

Prejudice: "Poor Black children are much more likely to attend high-poverty schools than
...

http://www.epi.org/publication/poor-black-children-are-much-more-likely-to-attend-high-poverty-schoo
ls-than-poor-white-children/

poor White children.

Prejudice:  Is the IAT up to the job?

http://nymag.com/scienceofus/2017/01/psychologys-racism-measuring-tool-isnt-up-to-the-job.html

This article, reviewing some research, suggests it is not a reliable enough tool.

Prejudice:  Do racial attitudes guide welfare preference?

https://medicalxpress.com/news/2016-12-image-typical-welfare-recipient-linked.html

Surprisingly, this question had not been previously tested experimentally.  This article
describes some very recent research looking at the question.

"CDAC is a cross-cluster service working to enable humanitarian
operations to get information to those populations affected by the
January 12 2010 earthquake and its aftermath (including issues
such as cholera) and to channel their voices back to the providers
of assistance working with local media and non-mass-media
communications.

Communication Strategies:

CDAC uses various information and communication methods in an
effort to act as a source of expertise and advice, a community of
practice, and an advocacy platform that aims at ensuring that the
humanitarian sector mainstreams CDAC, and that local media play
a role in maximising aid effectiveness, accountability, and transparency
to affected communities. The CDAC network in Haiti includes experts
in radio, mass media, SMS (text messaging), web based and
non-mass-media communications, public information officers, and
journalists, both local and international."

"Step 1: Under this scenario, the key process is turning an idea or general thought into a topic that can be recast as a research problem. When given an assignment where you choose the research topic, don't begin by thinking about what to write about, but rather, ask yourself the question, "What do I want to know?" Treat an open-ended assignment as an opportunity to learn about something that's new or exciting to you."

·  WRITING AND WRITERS: STYLE AND WRITING MANUALS : UNITED STATES: GOVERNMENT: NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS ADMINISTRATION: NARA Style Guide

National Archives and Records Administration
NARA Style Guide

Preface

Clear writing conveys clear thought. NARA writers in all offices must strive for clear communication to explain their increasingly complex work. They write letters, memorandums, finding aids, web pages, blogs, leaflets, reports, articles, exhibit scripts, brochures, budget requests, speeches, forms, and email messages. This style guide establishes agency standards of punctuation, word usage, and grammar that will answer writers‘ most common questions and will, we hope, promote clear and effective writing
throughout NARA.

Style changes over time and even from place to place, depending on the intended audience. These differences do not necessarily make one choice
―wrong.‖ What is ―right‖ is consistency within your own work and using the appropriate language and usage for your audience.

The NARA Style Guide fills two needs. First, the section ―Writing for Plain Language ‖ will help us comply with the Plain Writing Act of 2010. Second, it addresses many of the questions and issues unanswered by the Government Printing Office Style Manual (GPO manual). This guide is based on the GPO manual but includes modifications that reflect current usage.

The most notable difference from the GPO manual concerns the treatment of numbers. This style guide simplifies the rules. In most cases, writers will spell out numbers under 10 and use numerals for numbers 10 and over.
(See section 4.10.)

The GPO manual is still NARA‘s primary reference for style. For issues not covered in the NARA guide, continue to consult the GPO manual.

The appendix, ―Quick Reference,‖ may be particularly helpful to NARA writers. This list of words and phrases provides quick answers to common questions about capitalization, spelling, compound words, and plurals.

The NARA Style Guide took shape from the agency‘s specific language needs and will continue to change to reflect the needs and concerns of NARA writers. Use the NARA Style Guide for all NARA communications.

If you have questions about spelling, grammar, or usage that are not addressed by this guide, contact the Strategy and Communications staff

1. Writing in Plain Language

Writing in plain language means writing clearly. It means writing so that readers can
find what they need, understand what they find, and use what they find to meet their needs. The more clearly you communicate, the more likely your readers will grasp what you want them to grasp and do what you want them to do, from filling out a form correctly to complying with a regulation.
And the less likely it is that your readers will
call or write you to ask questions or express
frustration.

Ultimately, your job will be easier and more pleasant if you take the time to communicate clearly.

Beall's List No Longer Online Except.....

Retraction Watch
Tracking retractions as a window into the scientific process
Why did Bealls List of potential predatory publishers go dark?

Jeffrey Beall, the University of Colorado Denver librarian who has since 2008 chronicled potential, possible, or probable predatory publishers, has at least for now pulled the plug on his influential, and at times controversial, site.

.

The decision to take down the site and Bealls faculty page at the Auraria Library, where he remains a tenured associate professor was his own, the University of Colorado Denver tells Retraction Watch.

.

The site, scholarlyoa.com, which just earlier this month included a list of more than 1,000 such publishers, now contains no information. The sudden change was noted Sunday on Twitter, where questions about the move catalogued, along with some answers, by Emil Karlsson swirled for two days. Bealls faculty page was also taken down.

.

Some of the speculation surrounded Cabells, a publishing services company that had earlier announced it would house a publisher blacklist beginning sometime this year. Cabells, however, said it was not involved in the closure, and that it supported Beall. Cabells tweets also hinted at legal threats, which Beall has faced in the past.

Controversial website that lists predatory publishers shuts down
Librarian Jeffrey Beall wont say why he has unpublished his widely read blog.

My blog is now unpublished, said Beall, an academic librarian at the University of Colorado, Denver (UCD). He added that he couldnt give reasons and declined to comment further.

.

Investigating journals: The dark side of publishing
A spokeswoman for UCD said that Beall made a personal decision to close down his blog, and that Beall is still employed on the universitys faculty. In a statement, the university added that Beall would no longer maintain or publish his research on open-access journals and predatory publishers.

.

Bealls profile page on his employers website has also been emptied, as has a Facebook page that he used to publicise his list.

.

Since 2010, Beall has single-handedly listed thousands of open-access journals that he says exploit or deceive authors by charging fees to publish papers without providing expected publishing services such as peer review, archiving and editing.

.

The lists importance is tremendous, says Rick Anderson, an associate dean in the library at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. There really are predators out there running scholarly-communication scams, and Beall has been the only person willing to call them out. Anderson says he fears the list was taken down because of legal threats.

LIST OF PUBLISHERS
Bealls List:
Potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access publishers

.

This is a list of questionable, scholarly open-access publishers. We recommend that scholars read the available reviews, assessments and descriptions provided here, and then decide for themselves whether they want to submit articles, serve as editors or on editorial boards. In a few cases, non-open access publishers whose practices match those of predatory publishers have been added to the list as well. The criteria for determining predatory publishers are here.

.

We hope that tenure and promotion committees can also decide for themselves how importantly or not to rate articles published in these journals in the context of their own institutional standards and/or geocultural locus. We emphasize that journal publishers and journals change in their business and editorial practices over time. This list is kept up-to-date to the best extent possible but may not reflect sudden, unreported, or unknown enhancements.

Database Search Results for Food Stamps and Nuttrition

This post requires some explanation. On an internet discussion group, the topic of food stamps impacts on nutrition was discussed and a link to an article in the Washington Post on this topic was shared. The topic was framed under the concepts of healthy meals and food stamps. I came up with four phrases for healthy meals including healthy foods, nutritious foods and nutritious meals in addition to the original phrase. I shared links to several database search results for this topic. I had a brain storm and realized that I could have used the word nutrition as well.
Adding this word hugely increased the number of sources found. This post contains both sets of searches so that any interested in who search terminology can change search results will have a number of examples to explore and the second search lists over twenty examples of sources found with two of these searches. The links provided with each found and shared
source lead to a Google Scholar or Google Books search of that sources title.

About Us

http://databrarians.org/about-the-blog/

Because this is a collaborative blog, were always looking for your voice, questions, and experiences. Here are some ideas for ways to get involved:

Guest posts. Have something to say or want a link back to your blog? Consider writing a 400-1000 word guest post. Whether your audience is data-shy or advanced data geeks, we love a clear focus, engaging hook, attractive picture, and useful tips or walkthroughs for other data librarians. If you already blog, suggesting a repost can draw attention to your work as well as increase the diversity of voices represented here.

.

Reviews. Got a useful book, course, or resource to recommend? Write up a short review with pros, cons, and takeaways, and help others navigate this growing subfield of librarianship.

.

Learn to blog. If you have an idea for a topic related to data and libraries, well help coach you through your first post.

.

Editor. If you love developing and editing content, consider helping us develop resources by subfield (RDM, data visualization, social sciences data, escience data etc.) or type of need (data librarians at research universities, public data librarians, liberal arts data librarians, data in community colleges)

.

What is databrarians.org?

.

This blog is a still-developing collaborative project to share tips, conversations, and strategies among data librarians and students looking to become data librarians. Our goal is to help each other more effectively bring data resources to our library communities.

"The Council on Disability and Persons With Disabilities (CDPD) is a council
of the Commission for Diversity and Social and Economic Justice. The council
functions to develop social work education resources that are related to issues
surrounding disability and the experiences of individuals with disabilities.
The council also works to facilitate the full participation of people with disabilities
in social work education and is ready to assist in all endeavors related to issues of
disability within this field. Finally, the council advocates to include social, political,
and economic matters involving disability and individuals with disabilities in the
framework of social work education. Read more about CDPD's charge."

them..."
