The Tarantula Nebula in SHO Narrowband

Bernard Miller

Hi,

This is an image of NGC 2070, also known as the Tarantula Nebula. It is large emission nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) about 160,000 light years away in the constellation Dorado. NGC 2070 actually refers to the large open cluster at the center of the nebula that produces most of the energy that makes the nebula visible. It holds a number of massive stars, including the most massive star known, R136a1. This image contains dozens of other nebulae in addition to the Tarantula Nebula which can be seen in the center left of the image. Mouse over the picture in the link below to see an annotated image with the other nebulae labeled.

Comments and suggestions welcomed.
