Hi,

Is it just me or has Clear Skies gone downhill lately? Their forecast the last two nights has not even been close. Right now it is showing clear skies and above average transparency and it is almost completely overcast. I am glad I have a sky camera and don’t depend on these guys.

On my weather... Make sure u refresh and the date time is accurate.  I have my settings set very conservative so if it's showing clear is should really be clear.  Maybe the sky cam needs cleaning.  I'll check my stuff when I get back on site later this week.

Al,

I always refresh. I think it is just that these are thin clouds or something. It was ‘cloudy’ most of yesterday until ~10 PM DSNM time but all the weather sites, CSC, etc where showing clear as well. Not faulting yours, just using it as another reference. Wish I could be wrong as much as the weather guy.

Al,

I kept getting hit by gusts until the moon came up. It could have just been where I was pointing. Everything after the moon was fairly good.

The forecasts and conditions have been challenging lately. I had planned on coming down for next week but the forecast seems to get worse every time I look. If it is clear, it is supposed to be windy, etc.

Yea could have been a high thin layer... Mostly ice... That will fool the IR sometimes.  That's where a dedicated seeing scope comes in handy... I may cobble one together this summer... They aren't hard to make..I have most of the toys just need to find the time.  But if it's a non-tracker you are still not looking overhead so you still don't get a good idea if it's not a stable air mass.  A test sub is still your only really reliable option.

Al,

I don’t know much about it but the clouds were on the Unisys IR/Enhanced IR images. It is just bizarre. I can understand the csc being wrong since it just relies on a single pixel but everyone else was wrong, too.

Arp 78 (NGC 772, UGC 1466 and others) is an unbarred spiral approximately twice the size of our Milky Way, located around 130 million light-years away in Aries. It is interacting with NGC 770 (UGC 1463 and others), a dwarf elliptical at the center of the image.

Luminance – 24x600s – 240 minutes – binned 1x1

RGB – 8x300s – 40 minutes each – binned 2x2

360 minutes total exposure – 6 hours

Imaged January 22nd, 26th, 27th and 28th, 2017 from Dark Sky New Mexico at Rancho Hidalgo (Animas, New Mexico) with a SBIG STF-8300M on an Astro-Tech AT12RCT at f/8 2432mm.

We’re open and I’m not having any issues. Anything over 10 or so and my scope moves around quite a bit depending on the direction. Seeing appears to be very good right now, too.

Re: Wind

Howard Anderson

Hi Bernard,

I am not...  I am seeing winds on my guage variable of 5 to 11 MPH and that
is from just taking a look over a 10 second period...

This site over in Arizona Sky Village which is relatively nearby has
a really good display of wind speeds:
http://www.skyimager.net/weather/ASVweather1.html
and can be used as an additional data point perhaps...

http://squall.sfsu.edu/scripts/jetstream_model.html
can be used to see the jetstream and wind vectors...
Not looking good at the moment...

Thanks,

Howard

Asteroid 2014 JO25

Dan Crowson

Asteroid 2014 JO25 is passing by earth today. I managed to capture some images of it this morning while it was approximately magnitude 11. With my setup, anything more than a 1/10th of a second exposure shows movement based on how fast it is moving. I ended up taking 1 second exposures none-the-less. My coordinates were a couple of days old so I almost missed it in my small field of view. It should be viewable tonight before getting much dimmer.

Re: Wind

Al Acker

Wind is a tough one down at Dark Skies.... everyone's monitor can be shielded from the wind based on what direction it's coming from. Until we get to a point where we can have a real central point of reference ( like a wind sensor on a tower or something, we will always have this problem.  My advice for now is gather all the info you can from multiple points and go with that.  No one wind sensor down there right now will be accurate for every building.

Hi Bernard,

Thanks,

Howard

Is anyone imaging? I have two wind monitors and one is registering 20+ mph and the other is saying less than 5mph.

Arp 303

Arp 303 consists of IC 564 (UGC 5230 and others), the spiral left (east) of center and IC 563 just below it. Both are approximately 275 million light-years away in Sextans.

IC 561 is the odd-looking spiral just above center.

UGC 5224 is the low surface brightness galaxy at the bottom center.

Luminance – 24x600s – 240 minutes – binned 1x1

RGB – 8x300s – 40 minutes each – binned 2x2

360 minutes total exposure – 6 hours

Imaged April 14th, 15th and 17th, 2017 from Dark Sky New Mexico at Rancho Hidalgo (Animas, New Mexico) with a SBIG STF-8300M on an Astro-Tech AT12RCT at f/8 2432mm.
