NGC 6902

Bernard Miller

Hi,

This is an image of NGC 6902. It is a spiral galaxy about 130 million light years away in the constellation Sagittarius. It is noted for its faint spiral arms emanating from a bright central core. This image combines over 45 hours of exposure taken in New South Wales Australia in 2018 and Rio Hurtado, Chile in 2020.

Comments and suggestions welcomed.

Thanks,

Bernard

Really nice. I’m a fan of the RGB stars on narrowband, too.

William - I agree, this is a great site for visualizing predicted air motion at many different heights.  I also like the ability to look at different models, particularly GFS and ECMWF.  Thanks for passing this along.  I'm sure I'll be using it quite a bit in the future!

Hi,

This is an image of NGC 6872 (center top galaxy). It is a barred spiral galaxy about 212 million light years away in the constellation Pavo. It is interacting with lenticular galaxy IC 4970 just below it. From tip to tip this galaxy is 522,000 light years, making it one of the largest known spiral galaxies. There are several other galaxies in this frame, including NGC 6876, NGC 6877, and NGC 6880, all at the top right. You can see an annotated version of the image by mousing over the picture at the link below.

Comments and suggestions welcomed.

Re: Smoke

Frederick Steiling

Hi Bernard,

I imaged last night.  I wasn't planning on it, but was actually surprised when I looked at the all-sky out of mere curiosity and saw a decent view of the Milky Way bands.  I haven't done a close analysis of the data, but visually things actually looked pretty good when I checked this morning.  It was definitely much improved over the previous night, which was a total no-go for me.

Hoping the stuff totally blows out soon.  This has been tough to deal with following the rough monsoon season we had.
