n6ws dx spider rejecting my login?

Hasan Schiers N0AN

k1rfi still works, without problem, but all of a sudden n6ws doesn't. I get a password error (when none is required for dx spider)?

I have not changed anything in spot collector, to my knowledge.

n6ws.ddns.net 7300 N6WS N0AN   and password is blank

When I bring up the window to connect to n6ws, it says connected, and then after a time (with no info showing from the Cluster, it says peer is closing.

If I hit connect, it says Connected. If I issue the command sh/dx

sh/dx
login: password: login: password: Sorry

...and I get peer is closing in title bar.

What have I got wrong?

Hi Joe,

All DXSpider nodes were encouraged to implement registration and passwords on the [Dxspider-support] reflector.  You may find it strange, that I was just being proactive in my implementation schedule, but hopefully many, if not all, other nodes will follow.  There have been constant complaints about the content of announcements and erroneous DX spots going out over the network. You obviously have not seen the complaints.  Without user registration and passwords, there is no method of controlling what goes out over the network.  In the past, we have developed an extensive lists of 'bad words', 'bad spotters' and 'bad callsigns' to somewhat control what goes out on the network, but that is not working adequately.  If some method of securing the network is not implemented, anyone can log into any unprotected node with a bogus callsign, and start flooding the network with announcements and bogus DX spots.

This is a off topic for the DXLab reflector, and if you have a complaint about the implementation of security measures on the DX Spotting Network, we should probably discuss it on the [Dxspider-support] or [sysop] reflectors.

I simply find it strange that there is no other (apparent) movement
in that direction by other cluster software or even the other DXSpider

widely announced, uniform implementation date.

At least Dave made it easy to conform with SpotCollector. This change
will range from painful to impossible with other user software.

Joe,

Well, since you are one of the complainers about the spots and announcements, you should understand the need.  I suggest you get involved on the [sysop] reflector, organize a worldwide announcement, and take over the coordination of the implementation effort.  It may run smoother.

Yes, Dave did made the use of passwords easy, and some other application have not.  Several other logging programs require you type in the password.  The option is there for users to change their password to something easy to type, since there are no restrictions on the password content or length.

There have been constant complaints about the content of announcements
and erroneous DX spots going out over the network. You obviously have
not seen the complaints. Without user registration and passwords,
there is no method of controlling what goes out over the network. In
the past, we have developed an extensive lists of 'bad words', 'bad
spotters' and 'bad callsigns' to somewhat control what goes out on the
network, but that is not working adequately. If some method of
securing the network is not implemented, anyone can log into any
unprotected node with a bogus callsign, and start flooding the network
with announcements and bogus DX spots.

This is a off topic for the DXLab reflector, and if you have a
complaint about the implementation of security measures on the DX
Spotting Network, we should probably discuss it on the
[Dxspider-support] or [sysop] reflectors.

Gil,

For non-registered (brand new) users, there is a different logon header when they attempt to connect to N6WS-6 that gives instructions on how to request registration and a password. Without registration, they can use the N6WS-6 DXSpider node to receive DX spots and announcements.  They just can't send out anything over the network.  For existing users, just send me a message on the DXSpider node or an email, and I will make the necessary changes.

That's been happening for 30 years - even before internet linking.

In the past, we have developed an extensive lists of 'bad words', 'bad
spotters' and 'bad callsigns' to somewhat control what goes out on the
network, but that is not working adequately.
And it has never worked. The stuff surrounding 3Y0J was just another
(painful) example ... I had to disconnect from CQDX as there were more "kvetch" spots (and bad language) than useful information.

You may find it strange, that I was just being proactive in my
implementation schedule, but hopefully many, if not all, other nodes
will follow.
I simply find it strange that there is no other (apparent) movement in that direction by other cluster software or even the other DXSpider nodes that I use. With a change of this magnitude, one would expect a widely announced, uniform implementation date.

At least Dave made it easy to conform with SpotCollector. This change will range from painful to impossible with other user software.

I suggest you get involved on the [sysop] reflector, organize a
worldwide announcement, and take over the coordination of the
implementation effort.
Since I have not been a node sysop for nearly 40 years (I gave it
up after the ARRL/TAPR Automatic HF Control STA when career issues
curtailed my available time), I would not be eligible.

That doesn't change the fact that coordination and advance planning
are appropriate in any change of this magnitude.

Yes, Dave did made the use of passwords easy, and some other application have not.  Several other logging programs require you type in the password.  The option is there for users to change their password to something easy to type, since there are no restrictions on the password content or length.

Bill, I strongly support your strengthening of the authentication required to post spots and comments to the worldwide DX Cluster network; I hope that your fellow DX Cluster operators follow suit in large numbers.

Feel free to use this forum to post DX Cluster policy and procedural announcements without my pre-approval, as most DXLab users employ SpotCollector and will find such announcements relevant.

I had been using the N6WS DX Spider source, and it quit on me.  I simply moved to another cluster.

Now I found out why, got my password re-sent to me, and when I try to log in it opens and closes immediately.  (peer is closing)

Is n6ws.no-ip.org the correct address?

Is 7300 the correct port?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
Earl / KD5XB
