CI-V Quirkiness

Bruce N7XGR

Dave,  Using the program Commander by DX Labs and using the
built in terminal to send/receive CI-V commands shows this
for sending USB-D,  FEFE88E01A060102FD
Now here comes the quirky part, in doing testing I found this.
Sending this command, FEFE88E01A06FD in USB-D mode results with
a read back of FEFEE0881A060101FD which is correct for USB-D mode.
Sending the same command while in FM-D mode results with
the same exact read back for the query command.
If I send this, FEFE88E01A060501FD when in SSB mode it does not change
the mode to FM-D, the 05 is for FM mode.
But if I send this command, FEFE88E01A060101FD when in regular FM mode
It does change the mode to FM-D, the (01)01FD is for USB using filter 1.
So far I have been unable to switch the mode from regular SSB to FM-D
and by sending the same command when in FM-D mode does not change
it to USB-D mode-----this is very very strange!

+ Only Icom Technical Support can explain that behavior. Be sure to tell them which model transceiver you are using.

Dave,  Without creating a macros button to send more than one command
how can I test sending two commands one after another using the
Commander Messages, Execute CAT Command test area and only doing one click Exec button?
The two commands are,
FEFE88E0060502FD   which puts it into FM mode
FEFE88E11A060102FD     which now puts it into FM-D mode

Any help appreciated,  Bruce  N7XGR

+ You cannot; the "Execute CAT Command" panel can only send a single CAT command at a time.

+ You can send your two CAT commands from a User-defined Command Sequence and monitor the results in the Messages window. You might want to temporarily disable "Continuous Interrogation" to avoid the clutter of polling commands and responses. You might also want to insert a <WAIT> command between your two CAT commands in the sequence.

Well Dave thanks because the Command Sequence did put the 7610
into FM-D mode from regular USB mode using these,
FEFE88E0060502FD   which puts it into FM mode
FEFE88E11A060102FD     which now puts it into FM-D mode
Then to reverse this,
FEFE88E11A060000FD     which puts it back into FM mode
FEFE88E0060102FD     which puts it back into regular USB mode

Thanks again,  Bruce  N7XGR

+ For my IC-7800, I employ a user-defined sequence that toggles to and from Data mode:

FEFE<CIV>E01A060101FD to enter Data mode

FEFE<CIV>E01A060000FD to leave Data mode

+ It works with USB/Data-U, LSB/Data-L, FM/FM-D1, and AM/AM-D1.

Guessing from the Hex 88, are you using an IC-7100
Assuming you are, as I found out, the firmware is still a bit "buggy" even after all these years"
If you can get someone to use your command on a different model rig, that may identify the error is with the firmware and not the command being sent.
An example of this is the RIT LED not illuminating when commanded.

Stevie,  The same CI-V commands are used on other Icoms.
I tested this as you see on a IC7100 but primarily testing on
a IC7610.  Of course the 7100 has more CI-V commands being
capable for V/UHF ops and D-Star but some commands are the same.
The DATA commands are the same for both radios.
The only way so far is to switch it into FM mode then invoke the
command to have it enter FM-D mode.  In fact the same command
is used to enter USB-D mode from regular USB mode.
The command to enter DATA is separate and totally different, just the same
if you tap the MODE button then tap the DATA button.
I see no way of specifying a mode and have it enter DATA mode in
one single command.
There was a query on the IC7100 group about this.

No idea why Icom doesn't publish these themselves (two versions):

Icom - https://darkbyte.ru/upload/2016/92/icom-civ.pdf

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think you can break your
radio if you send it a CI-V command that the radio does not support -
the radio just ignores it. Meaning that you can probe for commands
(and their results) that may not be documented by Icom.
